Hi,
I have been searching the net for hours now trying to find a retailer in the UK that sells YUV component cables. I just got a new DVD player and TV, both with component support and would like to utilise this form of connection. I think IXOS make some but I'm not sure. Can anyone help?

Thanks.

I think the thing is not to get ripped off,i'm expecting my free sd110e in the next few days to go with my 36ZP18P both toshiba, from what I can see they are just standard phono connections so all i'm buying are phono leads.

Someone once tried to sell me a £90 coax lead,I tried it and it was no better than the £5 one i already had.

I'm having the same trouble as you, pgroundwater. Can't seem to find the right connections at all.

I've just bought the 32" version of the Tosh set that Wack has - very nice picture, but only connected via a simple composite phono lead at the moment and suffers from vertical 'dark bands' that are more apparent in certain picture set ups (usually if the picture is dark, i.e: space scenes, nighttimes, etc.). Have you had this problem, Wack?

I've read elsewhere that by using the component RGB connections this problem will go away! I could also use the SVideo connection, but this is at the front panel of the TV - as is the phono composite - and looks unsightly with the lead hanging from the front of the set!

So if Wack is right and the leads needed for proper RGB component connection are just the basic phono type, which are the best ones to buy and where from?

Do Richer Sounds stock them, for example?

BTW, sorry to hijack your thread, pgroundwater, but at least it's the same topic! :D

Hi

We have the Tosh telly too and so I've done a bit of research on component connections.

For a simple explanation:

timefordvd.com/ref/ComponentVideo.shtml (http://timefordvd.com/ref/ComponentVideo.shtml)

and a more complex one:

www.cybertheater.com/Tech_Archive/YC_Comp_Format/yc_comp_format.html (http://www.cybertheater.com/Tech_Archive/YC_Comp_Format/yc_comp_format.html)

The difference between component video and regular analogue audio interconnects is that component uses 75ohm cable, and analogue audio is normally only 50ohm.

The cable used for digital audio is also 75ohm.

There's a selection of branded ones (19.99GBP - 117GBP) at:

www.hificables.co.uk/acatalog/Cable_catalogue_Digital_cables_18.html (http://www.hificables.co.uk/acatalog/Cable_catalogue_Digital_cables_18.html)

and also a cheaper generic one (9.99GBP) at:

www.keene.co.uk/ (http://www.keene.co.uk/)

(LEADS & CABLE|VIDEO, VIDEO + AUDIO and AUDIO LEADS|OTHER AV LEADS)

Keene will make one up to custom lengths too:

(LEADS & CABLE|Leads To Go|1 phono to 1 phono composite video or AC3 digital audio).

** I've not used either retailer before so can't comment on them **

In the end we've gotten our local hifi retailer to make us a set up at a fraction of the price. (Hopefully arriving this week).

Hope this helps!

Nick

I also just got the exact same TV as you - I just love the way it looks. Sometimes you forget it's not a plasma screen! Composite is the worst form of connection you can use and is probably causing the problems you speak off. I'm using S-Video at the moment and the picture is very good. However, use RGB via Scart for a better picture again. Component is the ultimate though so my advice would be to use this type of cable - if we could find any!! They leads themselves are the same as RCA phono ones so I'm going to get some IXOS 171AV type cables which should be good quality.

You can still use S-Video via the back of the TV if you want. Both AV Scarts 2 & 3 support S-Video so all you need is either a Scart-S-Video adapter (this also allows you to plug composite and audio LR cables into it) or a fully wired Scart and set the AV 2or 3 to S-Video in the TV's menu.

So if Wack is right and the leads needed for proper RGB component connection are just the basic phono type, which are the best ones to buy and where from?

I've found some at http://www.keene.co.uk for £10 but I'm a bit dubious about their quality at such a low price. The IXOS 171AV are better and not too expensive at around £30. Still having trouble finding them though!

Try Richer Sounds but they never seem to have stock of anything when you want it.
