How long can you fly the Dodo for?
I can only fly it for 4 seconds, is this normal?

It's is possible to fly for longer, but was never meant to be flown for long periods. There's probably some info on GameFAQs on how to fly for longer.

It's just a novelty in GTA3. It's notoriously difficult to fly. Once you're in the air you can last for a few minutes. There's nothing to do though. Most of the tall buildings aren't even solid.

You can fly for a lot longer than a few minutes, as long as you want in fact. Just takes practice thats all.

As soon as you take off just tap the button to keep you plane level so you dont lose control, keep doing it until you are up high in the air. And then its pretty easy from there.

Its been a while but I could basically fly in it as long as I could be bothered to keep tapping the stick or whatever it was i did to keep it in the air.

There was a demo on one of those Gaming TV shows, I think it was the one with the blonde with the squint hair and lisp :D Anyways a guy showed you how to control it so you could keep it in the air as long as you like but the game wasnt well designed for flying as there were bits, like the bridge, that were solid so you couldnt fly through/too close.

-Take off using the same runway as the jets that are taking off and
landing. You don't have to worry about hitting them since they are not
solid.
-Start at the end of the runway where the Dodo is found next to the
helicopter.
-Line up with the broken line on the runway. Push the X button and hold
the left stick forward. Look at the tail of the plane, when you start
to see sparks, let the stick return the neutral position. You should
lift off of the ground.
-Slightly tap the left stick forward to level out the plane. You will
need to do this constantly during flight. If the nose gets too high,
you will stall. An easy way to keep it level is when you see red above
the wings, tap the stick forward. You shouldn't need to pull the stick
back (only for advanced flying.)
-Don't panic! The plane will look like it is going to come down but it
won't, as long as you keep the plane level.
-To turn, slightly tap the left stick to the left or right, then
slightly tap it the other direction again to straighten the plane out.
Do not turn sharply...tap tap tap the left stick. I suggest turning to
the right and flying over the water to get the hang of the plane. Stay
somewhat close the coastline until you get used to flying and watch out
for the unique jumps. Don't fly too far out to sea because the game
will lock up or your plane will disappear from the screen or both.

*NOTE*: You do not have to hold the X button during flight. I believe
holding it will slightly increase your air speed. You will need to
release it during certain landings.

It's is possible to fly for longer, but was never meant to be flown for long periods. Indeed, rockstar never intended it to be flown for minutes on end, hence the glitch if you fly over a unique jump.
