i am hoping to get my first DVD player from Santa. I will probably only use it occasionally as I have a Cyrus system for music and Sky for movies. So do i really need to pay extra for multi region?
I am going to go for the pioneer 545 as i need 2 scarts to put my sky/vcr through. The 545 is £229 +pp at Empire Direct and £250 +pp at Home Cinema Heaven - Is it worth the extra? THanx.
Hi, in one word: YES. The discs are generally cheaper than if you buy them in shops here nad much better for extras and sound formats! Its only another £30 and you will soon make this money back by not having to buy the discs in rip off britain

Oh yes, oh YES!
Region 1 discs (USA, Canada) are often better produced, available earlier and generally cheaper than domestic titles.
Plus the catalogue for R1 is huge compared to what is available in
Europe.
After you've whatched a few DVD's I think you'll find the Sky movie channels a little less satisfying.
Enjoy!

If you buy it from Empire its Not Multiregion (none of their players are, you`ll need to have it modded via a third party, losing empires warranty on the unit).
It all depends if you are planning to import or buy on the forums classifieds as most are region 1.
If all you intend to do is buy a few favourite films from wh smith then no,but if you are going to get into home cinema big time then you need multiregion without question.

If you dont buy Multiregion, you will kick yourself forever. Cheapest disks, earlier release dates, easy availability from the likes of Play and *********. You know it makes sense :)

It'll only take 2-3 R4 discs to recover the cost of the mod, so yes.

Definately worth the extra for multiregion. Even if you don't think so at the moment, as you collect more discs, esp checking out review sites and sites like this one, you'll eventually want the option of R1.
Welcome to the Forums Boozyuzi.
I think you will have realised the way to go by now from the previous posts. I'm sure they will echo what every other member in here will tell you.
Also, remember to apply for a new credit card and overdraft as you will be starting a very expensive addiction. You've been warned. ;)

...and then the widescreen TV, DTS amp, speakers, blah blah blah.
Good job that staying in is the new going out! :D

There are a lot of good things to be said for multiregion players, but in my opinion it is still something you do only if you need to. Region 2 gives you some assurances about compatibility with your existing kit. For instance can your TV handle NTSC and /or PAL60. Would you be prepared to buy /rent a new TV?. There is more research to be done than to simply ask 'is it worth it?'. Post the make and model of your TV. Members may be able to tell you of any potential problems there. Then ask yourself if you are likely to be a frequent shopper, and if the advantages stated above will really be important to you! If they will, then spend the extra. The player is a good one by all accounts, and a multiregion mod may increase its second hand value should you consider upgrading.
I've got to agree with Cable Monkey. If you won't buy DVDs, but only ever plan to rent them from the local Blockbusters, I doubt that they will ever be renting out R1 discs.
If you're not sure, however, you'll be pretty annoyed if you have to buy a new one in a year or two to cope with R1.

Thanks for all your advice. I have decided to go for a multi region Pioneer 545. I think the people that have said - do it, or you will regret it have won. The worst case scenario is buying a region 2 player and 6 months down the line regreting it. I intend to buy a few classic films and some music DVD's. Can't wait to get the new U2 live Disc ! It is only £23 extra thanks to the deal at www.homecinemaheaven.com Thank You Justin.

When I got my 1st player a couple of years ago all I knew was it had to be multi region.( So I could play American R1s )
But pretty soon you find all sorts of cool R3s and R4s floating around on the net.
IMO a standard 545 R2 only player would be a nice player with its entertainment potential severely limited.
And for the sake of 23 quid you've made the right decision.
