Just realised my favourite game used to be command and conquer and Red alert. I havent played any of this type of game for absolytely ages, can anyone recommend me the best one at the moment. Played Tiberian sun which was cack, and generals was ok, but what's around at the moment?

No. Dawn Of War. It *is* brilliant. Singleplayer is good (not great) but multiplayer is just superb.

Watching dreadnaughts pick up soldiers and chuck them half way across the screen is just awesome.

Warcraft 3 is the last RTS I really enjoyed playing.

The Total War series is good as well but is actually not your traditional RTS.

I'm playing Warcraft 3 atm and it's the best RTS I've played since Red Alert.

the thing I tended to like about C&C was the sort of semi-futuristic weaponry. Don't think running orks around my screen is really my thing. ;)

Dawn OF War!!! Orks with laser cannons! Big giant hulking robots throwing things around the place! Tanks!

Go download the demo:

semi-futuristic weaponry didn't help Tiberian Sunrise ;)

Dawn of war is brilliant. Its probably not that much more futuristic than C&C in terms of the weaponry. You get great satisfaction dropping Dreadnaughts into the middle of an enemy army and watching them snap their backs before flinging their corpses. Multiplayer is a lot of fun too.

Rise of Nations. It's like Civilization in real time and is a fantastic game.

I've not played many recent RTS's but I think Red Alert 2 is the best of Westwoods Command & Conquer series although I'm a huge fan of the less popular Dune2000. Blizzards Starcraft is really good too.

http://www.strategyinformer.com/ is a good site to find out about recent rts's

Act of Wars pretty good. It's more or less C&C but with some new touches and real world locations. Well worth the £12.

Act of war is really good, and the amazon price is well worth it.

Dawn of War and Act of War are both embarrasingly easy - espically Dawn of War. I think I reloaded a game about 3 times in total - all the other missions I completed in 1 attempt which isn't good. Act of War ain't much tougher - there was only 1 mission which had me stuck for a little while and that was more down to me underestimating the number of tanks the AI would throw at me!

Getting my hands on Command and Conquer: Generals Deluxe Edition to play online again - £17.99 from Play and I can play the Zero Hour expansion address which I haven't played previously! :D

Yeah, the AI in DOW is a little easy in 1 on 1 (it works quite well when you move up to 2v2 and 3v3 since its coordination is much better than that of 2 or 3 humans). Not played the campaign right through in ages. But it still spends most of its time in the drive due to multiplayer.

I'm not too bothered about it being easy as I havent played an RTS for a while and will be pretty rusty. Also, got a bit frustrating in Red Alert when I'd play for an hour and a half then lose the mission! Gonna go for Dawn of War then maybe Act of War if I complete it :)

Probably explains why I found it easy as I never got round to playing the MP section ;)

Total Annihilation is the best RTS ever.
Enjoyed playing this immensely, and the extra maps and units was quite refreshing. Loved multiplayer too, although games could go on for hours!
Its a shame support dropped off, and getting patches / maps got harder and harder. I still return back to it every so often though.

Gotta agree. This along with Age of Mythology kicked me back into the world of RTS.

Expansions for both are excellent too (I believe one of them can be picked up on Ebay cheap-ish ;) )

I actually reinstalled Rise of Nations last week and I'm thoroughly enjoying playing through it again. I always meant to pick up the expansion but never seemed to get around to it. I'll take a look now.

I found Warcraft 3 a bit cartoon-y. Didn't get on with LOTR:BFME either. Will just have to wait for the next C&C, I guess.
