Just a couple of numpty questions before I order.....

Is this an AGP card as it doesn't actually say?

Does it have both 'standard' 15pin d connector and DVI outputs for dual monitors, or just DVI, as the image on the site seems to just show a DVI output and I don't have a TFT screen (I have a Samsung SyncMaster 900IFT 19" CRT).

Managed to download the manual in PDF, so I can answer my own questions!

It is AGP, and it only supports a single monitor, but that can be either DVI or VGA (using a supplied convertor).

Your first link says 9800 etc.. there are no AIW cards listed there.

This is a quote from the 5.6 release notes:

Operating systems supported

The latest version of the Catalyst™ software suite is designed to support the following Microsoft Windows platforms:

* Windows XP
* Windows 2000
* Windows Media Center Edition (graphics driver support only)

Which by my reckoning means that the TV Tuner part of the AIW card is still not supported.

It seems that people who have tried to use these drivers still are not getting full functionality:

I got the AIW tv tuner working in MCE2k5 (9000pro AIW) by using a hacked set of drivers. Apparently the older Cats worked fine and all they needed to do was mix the AIW from the old drivers with the newer video drivers........I think the drivers are called "Krell". If you search the forums at www.thegreenbutton.com or www.xpmce.com I'm sure you'll find them.

I cant tell you how happy I am to have full MCE support for my AIW card, I love MCE 2005 however have not been so keen on the range of TV Tuner cards on the market that are supported by MCE. That’s no longer a problem though and the AIW and MCE work flawlessly together. You can even use the AIW and another tuner in dual tuner config!

I thought the hacked drivers were called 'Kram'? And these drivers are good as a lot of people have apparently had success with the drivers, but they are very old. I think they range between 4.1 and 4.6. That is several months behind the recently released 5.6 Catalyst Drivers.

KRAM!
They're the ones! The video element on them is old, but this can be updated using any newer drivers. It's the AIW multimedia part of the drivers that is needed for the TV tuner......having said that, the gfx accelerator element isn't really a big deal to me with my old card.

What I want to know though, is can the new AIW drivers be used in conjunction with my Freeview card to give me twin tuner? ie freeview and terrestial?

I received my AIW 9800 card today (very quick service! ). The drivers and applications are loading, and boy are there a lot of them!
Unfortunately, I did not get my Windows Media Center edition disc today, so like I said earlier, I will report back by the end of the week.

Just a reminder to anyone about to order one, it shares its power supply with the hard drive and so some old computers may not be able to handle it. I don't know how old is old, but I have just plugged the card into a Dell Dimension 8200 (just under 4 years old), and am glad it's working in here, so this is a warning to anyone buying this for a computer over 4-5 years old that it may not work due to an insuffcient power supply.

I can't answer directly regarding your Biostar, but I have a Shuttle and it fits in there pretty easily so I would be very surprised if it didn't fit in the Biostar. The heatsink / fan is actually pretty small - certainly much smaller than I was expecting it to be. It's overall thickness is actually less than the XFX GF4 4200 it replaced!

Your modern games will hit about 1280x1024 before you need to start scaling down detail levels to get past that.

I just got everything set up now and I'm pretty happy with the card. I've put it into a Shuttle SN45G (v2). Be warned that my Shuttle's power supply didn't supply enough juice to get it going! My original Shuttle PSU was rated at 200W, so a new purchase of a silentX PSU solved this.

There was a good guide on the forums at www.xpmce.com but I can't get on there at the moment for some reason. However, after doing a google search I found this post by someone called "Roguewarrior", which should help......bear in mind this guy is installing the ATI HDTV tuner as well as the 9800pro AIW, so it won't be exactly the same, but should give you the gist.

After MUCH work (steps below) I have AIW 9800 pro and HDTV Wonder recording at the same TIME!! I can even watch a DVD while they are recording (or a previously recorded show!!) This thing ROCKS!! ATI MMC eats dust now

So steps:

1) Clean install of mce 2005 - while installing it will ask for disk two (insert disk 2). Then it will ask for "Windows XP Professionsal Service Pack2" - this is just disk one of MCE. Follow through the initialization and you are ready for step 2

2) Install MOBO drivers (sound, LAN, etc)

3) Run ALL updates - including mce 2005 rollup, etc. I mean ALL except for drivers (that comes later).

Things like .Net and the sort. Reboot after each install.

4) Now you will either see ? in the device manager for the HDTV wonder or you will not. If you do - unpack the cab file I have attached and use the drivers in the cab file. For each unknown device point the wizard to the unpacked directory and then reboot after all drivers are found.

5) Install the DTV Decoder from ATI's website: http://www2.ati.com/drivers/atiCDwiz4-0.exe It will ask you for the original CD that came with the HDTV Wonder - insert the CD and then follow the instructions. Then reboot.

6) Next get the kram hacked drivers for the AIW card from the following site:

http://www.xpmce.com/forum/ftopic88674.html

7) unpack the zip file and run setup from root directory - then after the setup is complete - Reboot

8) MCE will startup and ask for the drivers - point the wizard at the EHOMEAIW\WDM_XP directory.

9) Point the setup to this directory for all the drivers needed. Now you are good to go (reboot again just to be safe).

10) No more unknown hardware errors should occur and you should be good to go.

11) MAKE sure that the antenna cables are attached.

12) Start up mediacenter and go to settings TV and setup the TV Tuners.

13) You will first configure the AIW and then the HDTV wonder.

Hope that helps some people!

Alec:

1) This will answer question #1

2) You can only reference the AIW tuner and the HDTV tuner on the HDTV Wonder (have not tried to address the analog tuner - but MCE has not given me the option anyway - so I guess no )

3) I use the HDTV wonder remote and the plugin from this web site:
http://remotew.free.fr/plugins.htm#MCE

All the best!

Wow! Thanks very much  ... but I'd already installed it before you replied :p . I found a much easier installation. This applies from the minute you receive the graphics card, and takes into account that you are doing a brand new install of Windows XP Media Centre Edition 2005:

1.) Install graphics card into PC (fairly straightforwards).
2.) In Windows (any version), install the drivers, software etc. for the graphics card, just to check if the card, remote etc. are working.
3.) Do a fresh install of Windows XP Media Centre Edition 2005, whereby your hard drive is formatted.
4.) Install all drivers, software etc. again for the 9800pro AIW.
5.) Install the hacked 'KRAM' drivers and software.
6.) Install the latest version of ATI Catalyst (version 5.6 at time of typing), to ensure best graphics quality.
7.) Open up Media Center and set up the TV Tuner :)

It took me a long time to install everything (because I have to install anti-virus, wireless adaptors, Office XP etc.), but it was definitely worth it.
I can't wait for the Media Center Extender on the Xbox 360! Roll on November!

If I was thinking of buying a new AGP graphics card am I right in thinking the likes of a GeForce 6600 GT 128MB (prob around £120) would out perform the 9800Pro in Gaming. However if I wanted the AIW funtionality (TV tuner etc) then this would be a good option an give comparable performance.

0871 222 7222.
Phone that number immediately, if you want it despatched today. When you call them up, tell them you've ordered it but haven't received any e-mail confirmation. They'll take your order number and postcode details.

Due to a mistake on their website, they do not ask you for the 3-digit code on the back of your credit card, which they have to do to verify your order. Once they verify it, all will be well and the card should be with you within 48 hours. :)

Yeah, I found the number and gave them a ring. Exactly what you said....it was because of my CVV code. Anyway, everything is sorted now and I will have it by Monday.
Cheers

Are there any cards that act as both a Digital/DVB tuner card AND a graphics card , both of which are supported by MCE?

I thought at first the Radeon 9800 AIW card might do this but I see that the tuner is analogue rather than digital
