did anyone catch this last night on 10pm (repeated on 12.30am) about three photographers giving up their film cameras and using digital cameras and taking shots of Britain. One of them was given a Nikon Dx2, the other some P&S camera and the last guy got got a mobile phone camera
Quite a good program and well worth watching if you are interested in photography. Last night was the first out of six programs and is on every sunday night.
Just had a look, might have to remember for next week http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/apictureofbritain/

Yep I caught this and quite enjoyed it, series linked/autoviewed it for next week
Good episode, shows that it's not the expensive camera that makes the shot.

i agree, i thought the guys with the P&S camera and the mobile phone camera made some really good shots and even better than the guy with the D2X.
I also don't think the D2X would have survived the 20ft drop off the pier the phone camera did.
I thought the guy with the phone had the best shots out of the lot of them. There were a few times where it was hit or miss, but overall I was quite impressed.

Was surprised at the good shots taken with the Phone! I suppose it helped that he was using a tripod.
Although each photographer didn't seem to go outside of his photographic sphere. They tended to try and take "their photo type" to fit the required category. Within the bounds of what they were trying to do the DSLR was probably the worse for the candids. The camera phone shutter lag etc didn't really matter that much for landscapes and he had a great eye for that type of photo anyway. The talent overcomes the tool at the end of the day.

Thanks John, I will be watching that.
Just watching it now and I have to say I'm left cold by some of the shots described as the best they'd taken. I presume these are different folks each week?
Missed this, but it is being repeated Tuesday night.

yes its three different people for each region, they also use different equipment each program as well.
I must agree on you with the " best shots" ( although I am suffering from lack of insparation at moment( and lack of time))

I missed the first week but watched it last night and wasn't overly impressed. It's a nice idea for a programme, but I was disappointed in how the three took to the challenge. I've got one of Tom Ang's books (Digital Photography Handbook) so I'm familiar with his work, but I have to agree with the sentiments on the "best shots". They seemed to quick to look for excuses, especially the lady who had a reasonable camera to work with but showed little creativity in her shots. If she'd bothered to check the manual, she could no doubt have turned off the beeps that were 'inhibiting' her, and I found it surprising that two of these professional photographers had to have it pointed out to them that holding the shutter button halfway down would set the focus/exposure before framing the shot.
Was thinking the same about why the woman didn't just turn off the beeps on the compact. They would have driven me to distraction especially if she was trying to take some casual shots of people unaware.
I also wondered if they had dumbed it up a little with the half shutter recompose as a bit of a we'll cover this to teach the viewers some stuff. That or these pro's are studio type photographers who use a fixed camera and just arrange the people to look nice and just push the shoot button. I was discussing this with a mate yesterday who's ex was a keen photographer and got a studio job but soon left when she learnt that it had very little to do with what she loved.

I watched the program too, Had to laugh when the Smart Media card went tits up and he lost some of his images..
I am still waiting for one of my Sandisk cards to return regarding the same problem.. :oh-hum:
At the end of the program I then pressed the interactive (red button) and saw some real tips from Tom Ang on various subjects.. Try that next week chaps..

Has anyone submitted photos for the series?

No, but I might have a crack for a laugh.
I wonder if the CF card issue was related to the Canon/Lexar problem? As with wseed's comment above I wasn't overly impressed with many of the shots (although the monochrome tree shot was very decent). Didn't seem an awful lot of creativity or interpretation on display though, and the woman shooting with the F810 was very ordinary and should stick to shooting empty porn sets.
Good to see Explosions in the Sky being used for the soundtrack though.
I submitted a picture, actually submitted two but only one has appeared, shame, I liked the other better.

I didn't realise you could submit your own pics. It may be worth everyone doing so to post your links in here so that they may get boosted ratings ;).
Good Idea -

Oops, that was my rating, cheeky I know, and then I linked from that, don't worry, I'm not cheating :)
Fixed link now.

anyone else feeling decidedly chuffed about their photographic endeavours after watching this programme? Halfway through the latest one - about the Midlands (okay, not the prettiest region but still...) and frankly I'm unimpressed with the efforts shown so far.
Oh well, nothing wrong with schaudenfraude!

I`ve only seen the one`s in Scotland/Ireland and last night`s one in the Midlands and missed the first couple of minutes; I thought the bloke with the camera phone was quite happy to have a go with it and also the coloured bloke was happy with is snaps
I can`t see why their picture taking should be any different with a digicam the with a 35mm. Maybe it`s not their chosen field but surely the pictures should be more the just snapshots; which is was a lot look like to me.
I`ve entered 3 pictures in the bbc digital picture of Britain
