View Full Version : Prince of Persia 3: Totally Extreme to the Max
Oh dear, those of you hoping for a reurn to form for the Prince of Persia franchise after the mess that was Warrior Within...well things don't look good.
Some screenshots here (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=58769), looks like they've decided to go with the "OMG SO EDGY!" dark visuals from Warrior Within again instead of the dreamlike visuals from Sands of Time.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – APRIL 25, 2005 – Today Ubisoft, one of the world’s largest videogame publishers, announced that it is developing Prince of Persia® 3 (working title) for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, the Xbox® video game system from Microsoft, the Nintendo GameCube™ and the PC-CD Rom. Scheduled for release in the second half of 2005, Prince of Persia 3 is the third volume in the award-winning Prince of Persia® franchise. Blending the best features from the first two installments (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time™ and Prince of Persia Warrior Within™) with the talent, vision and ingenuity of Ubisoft’s development teams, Prince of Persia® 3 will enliven the franchise with a vitality – and plenty of unexpected twists – that will impress and satisfy long-time fans and newcomers alike. Prince of Persia® 3 will be showcased at the Electronic Entertainment Expo May 18 - 20 at Ubisoft’s booth, #1300 in the South Hall of the Los Angeles Convention Center.
“Prince of Persia® 3 promises to be THE best instalment in the legendary franchise,” said Tony Kee, vice president of marketing for Ubisoft. “By combining two playable characters in a masterly balanced gameplay, with the perfect mix of acrobatic moves and a compelling storyline, the Prince of Persia will appeal to both Sands of Time and Warrior Within fans alike. The Prince is back to reclaim his kingdom, and he has a few surprises in store…”
About Prince of Persia® 3 (working title):
The Prince of Persia, a seasoned warrior, returns from the Island of Time to Babylon with his love, Kaileena. Instead of the peace that he longs for, he finds his homeland ravaged by war and the kingdom turned against him. The Prince is rapidly captured and Kaileena has no choice but to sacrifice herself and unleash the Sands of Time in order to save him. Now cast out on the streets and hunted as a fugitive, the Prince soon discovers that past battles have given rise to a deadly Dark Prince, whose spirit gradually possesses him. Game features include:
• Play and master two distinct characters: Wield the powers and weapons of two master warriors with different combat styles, attitudes, and histories.
• Choose your way to fight: Master the expanded Free-Form Fighting system to destroy enemies in your own style; strangle enemies from afar with the deadly Daggertail; or surprise them with full-speed one-shot kills using a brand new stealth art. The choice is yours.
• Battle freely through Babylon: Dominate enemies on the perilous rooftops, dodge through chaotic streets, and ambush pursuers in dark, underground passageways.
• Immerse yourself in a dramatic story: Experience unparalleled depth in storytelling as you fight your way through a twisting tale filled with adrenaline, tension and discovery.
• Manipulate time to surprise enemies: Execute powerful attacks against entire armies by slowing down or rewinding time, or surprise them by using some all-new Sands of Time powers.
• Experience a masterful blend of gameplay: True to the Prince of Persia® franchise, the game provides a variety of action combat, agility and story-driven puzzles – all masterfully blended together into a rich gaming experience.

This is the bit that has me most worried.
...surprise them with full-speed one-shot kills using a brand new stealth art.
Nnnnnggggg, why must every bloody game have strealth shoehorned in! :|
Also lots of talk about a focus on combat, which in Sands of Time was only an annoying hinderance between great platforming sections.

Meh, I guess they're gonna keep crapping them out - The kidz don't want puzzles, they want FIGHTING!!
Although, I actually quite liked the second installment, sure it lost a lot of the charm but it was still a pretty decent game. Damn hard though in places though.
I barely got into it before picking up another game, I shall have to go back to it at.. but whilst with Sands Of Time I wanted to play it through again after completing (and did), with TWW I really don't think I can be arsed to play it through to get up to where I was!
Warrior Within was great, the old style did look nicer but I'm still looking forward to this.
never played the sands of time but I thought the warrior within was superb, took ages to get into though. How's Kaileena in it though?! I thought the Prince finished TWW alone.

Theres 2 endings
I thought WW new direction sounded poor but the new one sounds even worse, whats next?
Elizabeth duke Jewellery?
Skylines with big spoilers?
EA type soundtrack with gangstas rapping about bitches?
Also the stealth bit is the **** on the cake, I sure they will add a bit where if you get caught one it's game over.
dammit I missed out two life upgrades.
I just hope there's no more crunchy metal guitar soundtrack, that grated a lot!

WW sucked balls.
Loved the first one but not too much of a SOT fanboy to not give the sequel a bash due to the different direction but I just couldn't get on with it.
A really poor & broken game :(
Won't hold much hope out for the third.
/me goes off to lovingly gaze at the supremeness that is Sands Of Time....

Haven't watched gameplay videos but saw the trailer last night, which was rather unexciting.
Considering this is going to be released so soon after POP2, I'm pretty much expecting a carbon copy of the last game.
I doubt they'd change the gameplay, despite loosing the nice graphics WW played the same as the original.

Hmmm.... looks good but I guess this footage is from PS2, I hope the Xbox port is as good, if there is one.
I dunno... WW could have done with more problem solving it's true, but POP SOT combat was too basic. I guess we will see.
Anyone know how well SoT did compared to WW?
It's not too surprising really that they're carrying on WW's look considering that it sold over double the amount of SOT (http://www.gamegossip.com/comment.php?id=11383), and that's the bottom line unfortunately for games publishers.

Bit of update, since it's out soon
it's now called Prince Of Persia 3: The Two Thrones (crap title) out 9/12
the game is moving away from the dark and grimmy 2nd game, and don't how true this is, the guy who did the first prince's voice is back (but I read that on gamefaqs) and best of all no crap music by Godsmack or what ever they where called
any guesses how many bugs are going to be in the game? :p
The trailer makes it look quite good, not too sure about the super powered prince but fighting across the town looks like fun, I got bored of the castles so it will be nice to have a different setting.
should be the last good game of the year, hopefully.

I don't think it's stealth like splinter cell, I think it's stealth kills only (so you can sneak and kill the creatures or you can just wade in kill everyone
I loved Sands of Time but hated the second game and just gave up playing it. How it sold more than the first one is beyond me, its like all rules of logic just went out of the window. I'll probably get this if it gets good reviews even though I don't know what happened with the story in the second one but that probably isn't all that important. As long as it is more like the first game and the city environment is worth exploring I'll probably buy it. I like stealth games but not games that have stealth in for no reason. But as long as stealth is optional that will probably work well.

I played through Sands of Time and Warrior Within back to back, and while the first game is tighter and more fun, the second is unfairly maligned. It's a bit like Die Hard and Die Hard 2 - not as good but not without its moments. Some of the cavernous rooms and the section with collapsing masts and platforms were incredible fun, even if the combat wore thin. Perhaps they'll pull a surprise out of the bag and it'll be like Die Hard With A Vengeance? If the reviews are positive I'll pick it up.
I loved them both, the first did look nicer but the sequel played the same with more acrobatics, although it would be a different story if I encountered some of the bugs that other people did! :D
Adored Sands Of Time, despised Warrior Within. Even though the prince and combat played the same the wonderful dreamlike atmosphere of the first game was completely changed and the rock soundtrack truly dire. I didn't like the way it was more combat focused either.
Hopefully this will be more like the first game but if its more Warrior Within i'll be severely disappointed.
played the first one through twice, didn't get anywhere near on the second, just gave up....didn't help that I had to do half of it twice because of a glitch

Exactly the same as me, save for the glitch. I've played through the first game twice, but I lost interest in WW about 1/4 of the way in. It's not a bad game per se, it just couldn't hold my interest as much as the other. A fair bit harder too, due to all of the annoying combat.

Somehow I'm having reservations about that :(
I've just read the review in the Official Playstation 2 magazine and it looks like this could be the best of the series (9/10) . "Two Thrones feels like the true sequel to The Sands of Time". It looks like Ubisoft have listened to the criticisms of Warrior Within: "they've reined in the darkness, dropped the rock music and dominatrix nonsnese and put the emphasis back on adventuring." There's even a few nods to God of War in there which can't be a bad thing. Looks like I'll be buying this after all. :)
it is very good.
but tbh it's not really gone back to the originals presentation but it does feel somewhere between that and Warrior Within.
I was going to buy an XBox360 tonight but decided it was pointless because i'd probably end up playing Prince of Persia 3, i'm glad i cancelled PGR3 now.

Just got this today and I'm loving it so far. The atmosphere of Sands Of Time has still gone but the gameplay is back to what it was. Plenty of adventure, dodging things and combat - great mix :)
For any sands of time fans this isnt warrior within thank goodness, and its great to see that ubisoft actually listened to fans complaints despite the fact warrior within was what made them a shedload of money. I'm loving the god of war aspect they've introduced too, really adds to the game.
Great to see the original actor back too, the guy from warrior within did my head in and was just too gruff.

Good to hear Mr_Woo - I've ordered this now, so hopefully will be here shortly.
Can you clarify what you mean by God of War factor though? Cheers mate :)
not quite sure of that myself and i'm halfway through it.
maybe it's the dark prince with chains or the big bosses?
my only criticism is the combat system, the stealth kill additions are fine and work well alongside the acrobatics but the on-ground combat is awful (for both characters) and whilst theres less of it, I find it harder. It may have been suitable a few years back but now there's God of War to contend with.

Yeah I was talking about the dark prince with chains, though it looks like this only occurs at a few points in the game as I have read in a few reviews.
I haven't found the combat system that bad at all, definitely not as good as God Of War in the combat system stakes but I haven't come into any major trouble whilst fighting. Will see how it handles later on as the enemies get tougher.
the Dogs annoyed me, until I found out how to kill them,
best to wait until they're absorbing your sand and then you can kill them in one with Y
Really enjoying this so far, a HUGE improvement over WW

I'm not getting this until Christmas so Christmas Day sounds like it's going to be a blissful blast with plenty to keep me away from all the repeats on BBC.
theres a very annoying boss battle in this, after the chariot section where you fight two men took me ages! :( .... maybe it was because I'd only found one life upgrade but i found it difficult, having only 2 sand tanks didn't help either.
I've only played up to the part where you get the Sands of Time Recall ability back. I’m impressed so far because it is more like playing the Sands of Time again. Some of the early outdoor areas were a bit muddy looking on the PS2 version making the breakable objects (for example) hard to spot, though the environments themselves were fine. But things have now got much better visually with a more consistent framerate.
I still don't really like the combat all that much and at times when you are fighting two enemies the camera and the controls just don't make me feel as in control of the Prince's fighting as I'd like. There are quite a few combos which is why sometimes you can find yourself unexpectedly spring-boarding off enemies and in the line of fire of a ranged attack.
Speed kills are definitely the way to go, to try and avoid longer fights. At first I just couldn't figure it out because I was waiting for the square icon to appear like in the tutorial but I eventually realised you just hit the square button when the dagger flashes. Speed kills let you concentrate on navigating and traversing the big environments and that is where the main draw of the series is for me. Really enjoying this so far. :)
combat becomes less of a chore when you finally get a sword (i imagine it's near the end!) otherwise I agree with you, the stealthy kills are the best way to take out enemies, works well with the platforming side too.

I'm really loving this so far - it's a great deal better than Warrior Within and pushes close to Sands of Time's serene acrobatics at times. Lovely looking, sounding, great story... they really sorted out WW's problems, listened to the complaints and made something that really works.
Far from being annoying, the stealth kills are immense fun, letting you use the Prince's moves to negotiate the geography of a room in order to get the advantage. But you don't have to do the stealth at all if you want to KILL WITH STABS.

got up to the "Klompa" boss battle in the arena and is ******* crap when he starts swinging his sword knocking nearly all your energy is bad game design. It's so cheap and gets health back if you mess up
and according to FAQ
A final note--there is a known glitch in this battle, where one of the visual cues will fail to appear. If you follow this specific pattern for the fight,
you should not get the glitch.

DAMN that was hard - took me at least 20 goes to kill it. Its a trial and error thing right enough. I was more releived than satisfied when it finally went down.
I hope that level of difficulty isnt a taster of whats to come!
Playing this on PC, but when I reach a save point in game, some pad buttons stop responding, the first-person, reset cam buttons, the rest are fine. It happens using keyboard too!

tbh I thought it was quite easy
The two Gladiators was hard for me, I guess it's helped by the amount of sand you have when facing them.
The end boss is the best, it combines the acrobatics with the action, took me about 10 goes but it's satisfying when you finish it.

got a bit further now, up to farah on the rooftops (not a big spoiler, just a bit further than the no jaw creature. The game is starting to get a bit better now.
can someone tell me how to beat the no jaw boss. I've been jumping onto the platforms, initiating a speed kill which just stabs his shoudler and once I'm up standing next to his head (I don't seem able to move or do anything up there) he just throws me off with no damage to him at all. I'm playing on the cube.
actually ignore that I've got the three stabs in a row (last one in the eye) off the platform where there are lots of daggers jumps. but the other platform I just jump onto and stab his arm and he throws me off. help!
can someone tell me how to beat the no jaw boss.I did this yesterday so the memory is fresh. You're on the right track:Use the two environment sections to get to head level, then initiate speed kills. It sounds like you've started them but have not managed to finish them both; maybe you've accidentally hit the B button early when you've got to his head? Each speed kill requires three presses of B, IIRC; the gap between the second and third press is relatively large.I enjoyed this boss -- much better than the tedious repetitive fights from Sands Of Time. With the speed kill system I rarely have to engage in combat at all, and the dispatching of soldiers becomes a part of the environmental puzzles. Good stuff.
EDIT: when I say "B button", I mean the button you press during the speed kill when the animation freezes. That's B on the Gamecube; I don't know about other platforms.
on the second environmental section (the one that only involves one dagger jump) I stab his arm but get no cue for the second speed kill (when he's just about to throw you to the ground). I reckon this is going to be trial and error until I get it right.

got up to the twin bosses (one with a axe and the other with a sword) and it's very annoying. Before the fight you have to do a long and annoying chariot race, (you end up using a couple of sand tanks) and you can't even save before the boss. Almost started the speed kill but I didn't see a flash (to start the speed kill) and i got thrown off and died). In the end, I got so ****** off I turned it off and could not be bothered to go through it again and got a save game past that bit.
this is why sands of time is better, chariot races should not be in the game (i think it was put in there to appeal to warrior within causal gamer) it's like putting drag racing into the splinter cell game). and the bosses are not very good in terms of game design.
I hope there is a new POP series for next gen consoles but in the style of Sands of time
I'm getting caned by the the twin bosses as well, it's a great game but there are flaws, why do they feel the need to add different styles of gameplay, ie the chariot? It's a Prince of Persia game, I expect to be running and jumping, if I'd wanted chariot racing I'd buy Ben-Hur1080.
I quite enjoyed the chariot race. Easy too. :D
The section before it though, "The Fortress" took me about 20 attempts. I knew I had to, but couldn't figure out how to get up the pole as everytime I pressed X it'd just jump and with the respawning guards attacking me, it made it really tricky. Turns out I just wasn't close enough to it to jump onto it.
I'm finding the game so much fun at the moment though.
As great as this game is the save system is VERY punishing. I die a hell of a lot and find it pretty annoying having to go back half the level. Especially if when you've done a massive section and suddenly turn into the Dark Price, meaning there's going to be a tough time attack section with no save point.
I'm also terrible at the combat. If there's more than 2 men to deal with at a time I get completely mauled.
As great as this game is the save system is VERY punishing. I die a hell of a lot and find it pretty annoying having to go back half the level. The save points are placed bizarrely inconsistently. Near the end I remember saving, then running up some steps, crossing a pit, going through some more corridors and coming across another save point! This was followed by a couple of fairly tricky and long sections (including the part for the final bonus health, which I found really tough) before another save point. Two minutes later: another save point! (Two in the same room even! Before the final boss, this was.)
Still, I did enjoy the game.
Bah. I recon I've put a good 8 hours into this game and according to a walk through I'm only 33% complete. :help: I don't know what I'd do if it weren't for gamefaqs. More than once I've found myself staring at the environment for 15 mins trying to figure out where to go and coming up with nothing.
Enjoyable, but solid! Damn those people who complained the first one was too easy/short.

I raced through the game, to be honest, and didn't need help once. The only thing that got me was the twin gladiators, which took me maybe fifteen goes to beat. Every other boss was two or three goes tops... and no save problems, either! I liked all three games, though the second wasn't amazing, but I didn't think any were that hard.
