View Full Version : Wireless console controllers - range & reliability?

What's the general concensus on the Wavebirds & equivalents for PS2 and X?
Reason I ask is I'd like to tidy up the area beneath the plasma and the best way to do it would be to stick everything about 6 feet to the right, under the stairs (open stairs in a flat's sitting room) and then just have the one set of component cables running to the plasma (already got a switcher for the consoles that works well).
However, that'll necessitate getting hold of wireless controllers for the consoles - hence the question in the title :D If possible I'd like to put some kind of enclosure around the consoles with a glass/plastic front to it - any issues with that that anyone knows about re controllers?

My wavebird works through walls and chairs to plastic shouldn't be a problem
wavebirds are fine. Ive used 3 and one wired on a cube no problems. Quite amsuing changing the channel and watching chaos rain having 2 controllers into the same channel hub. Xbox wireless apparantly dont work as well and interfere with wireless internet. iirc wavebords are supposed to work ok round walls and thru people walking in front of the tv
I've got wireless for all 3 consoles.
Wavebirds - excellent.
Joytech Neo-S - for XB - also excellent
Hori Anashin for PS2 - also excellent.
To sum up.
All are excellent.

Sorry to hijack GreyJackal, but what component switcher do you use matey?
Only got a Wavebird but I tested in halls at Uni when I first got it and it worked 2 floors down and a corridor across. That's a hell of a lot of walls and stuff. :)
(of course in practice I'm never more than 15 foot away when using it)

Only got GC and PS2 at the mo and it works a treat.
i have the same experience with the wavebird and xbox joytech wireless pads, great range and reliability, can use them anywhere in the house
have a wireless anashin 2 for the ps2 and it's been turd, sometimes would lose signal when sat 5 or 6 feet away depending on what angle you face the pad, i have since taken it to bits and messed with the soldering on the transmitter coil thingy and it seems a bit better now fingers crossed, great pad apart from the signal problem but my god it's annoying when it happens
The Wavebird is great but a shame it doesn't have vibration... they should really do another version with a switch like other manufacturers.
As for PS2 & Xbox, I've tried a few wireless pads but the best have been the new Logitech ones - they are the only ones I've tried that have the same sensitivity in the analogue sticks as their wired counterparts, plus they are compact, have vibration and still manage a decent battery life - definitely worth the dosh!

What's the deal with Xbox Live headsets and wireless controllers? Are there any that cater?
I don't think so tbh, there is one but it has the Headset adapter socket attached to the wireless dongle that fits into the controller port. Great stuff if controller wires annoy you and you sit a few feet from your Xbox :brickwall
If you really hate wires and have the green you could get one of these (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/productlist/GB/EN,crid=2230&categoryid=308)...

Yeah I saw that one Matt :D
As for Logi...bloody hell
It's not a case of hating wires so much as wanting to site everything out of the way in a unit about 10 feet away and off to the side.
Hmm..on the US site, it's 79.99 = 45 quid or so. That's more acceptable but still slightly silly.
I've found Nyko (http://www.nyko.com/nyko/products/?i=37) in various places for $59 so as long as the wireless pad I get has the expansion ports in the receiver rather than the unit itself, I should be ok. Now I just have to find somewhere that ships to the UK cheaply :D
Sod it - found the Logi one for 55 quid at Dabs :D

Bloody hell, Logi stuff turned up just now. Impressive
What's the quality like? You might not of had time to use it yet :p

No, not yet :D Got it delivered to work. Certainly the build quality of both the pad and the earpiece are top-notch, as is usually the case with Logi stuff
Pad takes 2 AA batteries, two Duracell of which are supplied. It's not as big as the "normal" X pad in the middle, but the layout of the controls seem exactly the same, so not sure where the extra "space" has gone until I compare them side by side. It's "nicely" heavy, if you know what I mean. Not overly so, but feels solid.
The headset is very comfortable. It's barely noticeable when it's on, and it's easy to put on as well. Plus, doesn't seem to interfere with the arm on my glasses as much, which is always a pain with headsets/headphones. Comes with a charger (yet another black box plug :D).
I'll update tonight with some pics and let you know how they perform.

Just received a wireless Logitech pad for the PS2. Was wary of getting one as I was concerned about interference/lag etc but have just played a few league games in pro evo 4 and it's excellent.
