Why does everyone think that this is inferior to the first two?!?! Just watched it - it is a classic movie.
There are far too many slapstick moments. Oh and the whole Ewok thing.

Not that many and the ewoks are fine. what about the great fight between vader and luke, and teh attck on Jabba and the final space attack.
For some reason people on this forum seem to dislike it as much as TPM. I don't! Don't you lot think that the final space battle is the greatest ever filmed? Nothing to this day has topped it.
Boba Fett's death being accompanied by a burp joke.

Good Points:
Yes, the whole Space Battle/Endor battle/Vader Vs Luke scenes are superbly done - editing; photography; FX; music, etc.
Probably the best overall FX in all of the films - including TPM! Yes I know there are some very dodgy FX in Jedi, but they still have more energy and dynamics than most CGI sequences in TPM. Particularly when you consider that the film was released in 1983!IMHO, of course!
Bad points:
Overlong Muppet sequence near the beginning - although looking back now, it's not too bad compared to the gimmickry of TPM! And Jabba is superb compared to the CGI monster of the SE: A New Hope!
Ewoks!
Very awkward exposition between Luke & Leia/brother & sister situation - poor dialogue!
Ewoks!
Rather wimpy revelation of Anakin's actual appearance at the end - compared to the almost Hammer Horror vision of the back of his head in 'Empire'. Very Poor!!!
Ewoks!
As mentioned earlier, Boba Fett disappearing in an undignified belch inside the Sarlac pit (SP) - a character that is menacing and mysterious in Empire reduced to a 'gag' in Jedi!!!
Ewoks!
The beginnings of the end were shown to us by Mr Lucas in 1983, why were we all sooo surprised by some of The Phantom Menace's naffness?
"All Jedi had was a bunch of muppets"
Would this have played better if the whole Endor plot had been set on Kashyakk(sp) and used Wookies instead, as was the original plan?
I think out of the original trilogy, it is definitely the weakest of the three. I would still however say it is a good film.
I remember seeing it at the cinema back in 83 at the age of twelve and cringeing at the ewoks. I've now grown to tolerate them, but still think they do reduce the serious tone of the film somewhat.
The Battle of Endor as a whole is great, just maybe a little too hard to believe, even in the Star Wars Universe.
I think Lucas should have stuck to his original idea and had the planet inhabited by Wookies instead. That would've made more sense in my book.
Anyway, being a bit of a Star Wars nut, the film still gets 8/10 from me.
May the force be with you... ;)

Am I the only person who didn't object to the Ewoks?
My problem with Jedi is the way everybody has to be a good guy. Han Solo's on the straight and narrow by this stage. His replacement scoundrel, Lando Calrissian, has become a straightforward good guy too. Still, at least there's Vader making up the numbers for the bad guys. Doh!

I prefer RotJ to A New Hope. OK so when I first watched it I was 10 and found the Ewoks entertaining, especially the Walker log dance. Now when I watch it I still remember having a good time when I first saw it and laugh at the memory.
Jedi isn't the best of the trilogy but its still a great film. The effects in the final space battle are unsurpassed, and in my opinion are the best ever filmed. To be fair no one could have topped EMPIRE it was near perfect.

Yep, it is a classic, just not in the same league as the other two. Though still about a 10,000 times superior to TPM.

This film is superb. The ewoks are great (anyone else nearly cry when that one guy dies and his mate is gutted?). The characters develop well and it is good to see vaders human side (although he does loose his menance). Very close to being my favourite although empire is too good! Funny thing is empire was the one i disliked when i was about 12.

Chewie making a 'Tarzan' sound as he swings through the trees:mad:
Very nearly spoilt the whole film for me
I was 8 years old when i saw ROTJ at the cinema, and thought it was amazing.I loved the ewoks.
The people who saw ANH at the cinema were too old for this film and that is why some of you found it childish.GL has a target audience in mind when making his films, and although he is getting softer in his old age,we are getting older.
ROTJ is the only movie i have ever seen at the cinema where the viewers(and there were a lot of them)gave it a standing ovation.Wonderful atmosphere for a kid.
Agreed.
I suppose Lucas is still working to a target audience and, perhaps, naively trying to do for today's generations what he did for us (well, a lot of us) 20 years ago.
When I was but a lad ROTJ was my fave, then I went through a period of hating it (Ewoks, suprisingly!) now I love it again for everything but the Ewoks. Still a fine film IMHO :D
I love ROTJ.............

ESB is the best plotted and constructed film of the SW series but ROTJ
is my favourite. It's so full of imagination, OTT pathos, humour,
fantastic music and SFX. It's just bloody marvellous and I love it so
there. :)
One other thing. I went to the first showing in Belfast in the long
departed Curzon cinema and I had to dodge two bomb cordons and walk
through a very dodgy area with my brother and cousin and I STILL was
in the first 10 to get in. It was worth the effort.
My idea of a perfect SFX is the scene in the end battle where the
rebel command ship and a big Imperial destroyer are trading bow blows
like giant galleons and you can see all the little figthers like
fireflies battling between them. NOTHING has beat that, CGI or
otherwise.

I was thinking of the EXACT same scene, when I saw this thread. This is what Star Wars is about (to me at least)! X-Wings. Huge fleets battling it out. The build up to the Death Star II battle was great and when the Millenium Falcon swept through the swarms of Tie Fighters and Interceptors..... whoaaaaa, you know they gonna dog fight it out!! Oh, and Biggs whoops ass! I'm just waiting for a game that could recreate battles of that scale!
Then I saw the Independence Day battle: Rip off or homage?
"Jar Jar Binks makes the Ewoks look like f@#!ing Shaft" - Simon Pegg, Spaced
Good points - Carrie Fisher in gold bikini
Bad points - Rancor, the new music bit added in the SE, um... most of it really.

Definitely the weakest of the trilogy, but still better than TPM.
I don't HATE the Ewoks, but the whole Endor sequence was overlong - as was the Jabba palace sequence at the begining. In fact, the film is basically two extensive muppet movies with a superb space battle at the end.
One thing that has always annoyed me about RotJ is that some plot elements seem to have been included simply because it was a Star Wars film, rather than coz they made sense. For example, why was R2-D2 taken to Endor? - his little wheels aren't exactly suitable for clambering over fallen trees and rough terrain. I remeber thinking how stupid that was when I saw it at the cinema in '83.

I love Return of the Jedi too. Its an absolutely fantastic finale to the best film series of all time.
The fact that its different with light hearted bits makes it fresh. The focus of this film is luke skywalker getting his dad back and this is done utterly straight.
Endor Battle is serious but it plays second fiddle to luke getting his father back and the bit where they reveal anakin skywalker at the end is perfect.
Some might say that having a whole planet of Ewoks at the end would have made it more realistic. what??????? you see planes defying gravity, you see lightsabres, you see people using telekensis, you see a big crime lord that looks like a slug and you want it to be realistic? Star wars is definetly not your film!
Besides, in ANH one wookie managed to get into and escape one armoured space station with the power to destroy a single planet! Had there been a whole planet of wookies in Jedi then it would have been no match and the empire would have been the under-dogs when the intention was to make the rebels the underdogs like they had been all the way through the trilogy.
Best Bit: The finale of the lightsabre battle at the end... the bit where Luke goes mental and the choir starts... sends shivers down me spine to this day!!!
Worst Bit: special effects for Han being released from carbonite... hmmmm

R2 is a valuable addition - open any door you want. C3PO can speak anything and everything.
the wookies wouldn't work. They are a threat, hence the empire would never station a shield generator there!
It is very close to ESB and a very underrated film.

I was reading this thread at 2AM yesterday, and decided to stick my copy on.
It was still as enjoyable to watch as previous times, but I did find the slap-stick death of Bobba Fett jarred a little, and the Ewoks were a little too cutesy.
Apart from that is was still a good (albeit simple) story well told, and miles ahead of ep1 "cinema menace".

I like ROTJ, but the Death Star again? Not very creative.
This time they have to destroy the shield on Endor, whoooppppeeee!
Jedi was a cop-out, really missed Gary Kurtz.
