WHERE THE HELL WAS AMERICAN BEAUTY??!!

William Shatners Wig
25-11-2001, 23:46
Where the hell were:
Ghostbusters
Miller's Crossing
Fight Club
Raiders Of The Lost Ark
The Commitments
This Is Spinal Tap
The Blues Brothers
Ben Hur
Das Boot
Twelve Monkeys
The Insider
Also what was going on with sequels?? The Three Colurs trilogy all got a mention, where Godfather's entry did not include Part 3 and Star Wars/Empire did not include Return Of The Jedi and Phantom Menace...
Surely if yer' gonna' use multiples, you should judge them by the whole lot and not just the best ones... You may as well have had them as seperate movies.... Hmmmm!!!

What a disgrace this whole poll was...about 20 of the films were absolute anal excriment and where the hell were;
Bridge on the River Kwai
Gandhi
Indiana Jones (any of them!)
Full Metal Jacket
Deer Hunter
Heat
Platoon
and I suppose theres many contraversial possible entries like Forrest Gump and the more popularist films like Fight Club and Seven etc that were omitted.
But most shockingly of all;
Titanic was featured - I mean for gods sake! Titanic? But it grossed nearly 2 billion worldwide I hear you cry? Only because the likes of my sister and her freinds went to see it 5 times....
The fact that this travesty of modern cinema was featured at all soured the whole experience for me....
i bet if they do it in a year that little tosser Harry Potter will be in it
What really ****** me off about these kind of polls is that the newest film out at the time ALLWAYS gets into the top ten!!! While good, Gladiator is no *******n' way the 6th best film of all time!!! Its not even in the goddman top 100!!!

A cop out indeed. Much of the films seemed to be in there through box office takings rather than the film being great.
Was this a public vote though? If it was, give it to the proper critics:mad:

It did not accurately reflect the public's opinion because you could only choose from a list of films chosen by Channel 4, and the reason why certain films were not in the list (i.e, Indiana Jones), is because Channel 4 could not get the rights to show any clips.
Some of the choices were ridiculous though, I mean, Titanic?! Full Monty?!. To quote another film which probably wasn't in the top 100 (John Carpenter's The Thing), "You've gotta be **************** kidding!".
It could also to with the fact they had already filmed the responses to the entries. So for the public to vote for their own 100 would be a logistical nightmare......wait do i hear the words 'think ahead' being screamed i think i do. A better poll would have been started at the beginning of the year, then when the polls had closed..say august they went and filmed the responses they neede and then shown that. Not just rushed out another 'We love it cos its great' poll.
OOOhh my spleen needs a good venting. Wheres that play thread....*goes in search*

Even with all the "what is THAT doing in there!?" sentiments, I think it was pretty good - certainly made me think about seeing a number of films that I haven't yet seen - such as The Godfather films, Goodfellas, It's A Wonderful Life, Casablanca, and so on.
Any film poll is going to spark controversy amongst fans, but if it gives good films a wider audience amongst the general public then it's done it's job.
But I don't remember seeing The Cannonball Run - what number was it?
:D
Someone's just kicked off a DVD Times Best Movie poll in the General Forums.
Just post your top ten films and we'll see what happens. I think if they pull this one off they'll deserve a medal !!!! :)

I'm really biting my lip here - just discussing the top 100 movies thing at work - people commenting on how TPM got slated - one reply : 'but whats wrong with it?'
I own the DVD - I enjoy the film, but it has SEVERE flaws in some places'
'There's none as blind as them what can't see'
If you just realise that these polls are utter ****** and just enjoy the clips of Goodfellas then you're laughing...
PS Pulp Fiction is easily the best film of all time...
IMO
Let's face it, this is just more cheapskate programme making, admittedly at it's most entertaining.
These 'Top 10/20/100' programmes are clearly the 'in thing' amongst broadcasters (especially Channel 4) - just a compilation of clips with celebs offering us their divine opinions. Must cost peanuts to produce.
I recognised the clips of Tom Robbins and Frank Darabont from the CH4 documentary that proceeded the last showing of Shawshank.
Paul Sorvino talking about Goodfellas (and the 'Why am I funny?' clip) was seen in 'I LOVE 1990'.
And so on.
Many of these top 100 films are soon to be shown of FILMFOUR. What does that tell you.
The fact that there was no Raiders (or Close Encounters, Ben Hur, Se7en, etc) HAD to be a rights issue.
And I still maintain that Brassed off was a MUCH better film than The Full Monty!!!
Wot no:
Wicker Man
Akira
Princess Mononoke
Spinal Tap
Shaolin Soccer
Profondo Rosso
Deadly Sausage Attack from Beyond The Stars

Being John Malkovich?
Memento?
Babe? (I'm serious)
Clash of the Titans? (I'm not)
Why should "proper critics" get to decide what is the best movie of all time?
Why should the top films consist of intellectual, arthouse, indie or generally non-blockbuster movies?
If one is to undertake the generally pointless task of identifying the Greatest Movie of All Time (seeing as it is a matter of personal taste and therefore few people are likely to agree - mine is Dazed and Confused, for example), then the only realistic way to go about it is to find the movie that has provided the most enjoyment to the most people. Simple as that.
Hence, Star Wars deserves the 'title,' for what its worth. What else fulfils these criteria so well?

Because they don't assume that "of all time" means mid-70s onwards and only in the English language? (Mind you, C4's list does range a bit wider than that.) Also, by the nature of their job, they've seen more films, and a wider range of films, than most people.
The trouble with any "top" list voted on by the public - at least, all those I've seen - is that it is filled with works that are only a few years old. They may turn out to be great, or they may turn out to be passing fads - until they undergo the test of time, there's no way of telling.
Why should the top films consist of intellectual, arthouse, indie or generally non-blockbuster movies?
Does The Godfather (I and II) fit that description? Or Singin' in the Rain? Two examples of many that would be on most "proper critics" lists.

Gone With the Wind and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs? Both of these have been seen by far more people in the cinema than Star Wars.

Pointless, pointless, pointless...one man's Citizen Kane is another man's Citizen Smith.
Let's have The Best 100 Westerns, 100 Best Shark Films (in Cheers, they once voted for the Sweatiest Movie ever made), The Best 100 Movies Screened on a Wednesday Afternoon (in Smethwick), but most of all let's have the Best 100 Films you like (and every list will be different, God bless 'em).
But even in my wildest imagination, even if 100 monkeys were pounding at 100 typewriters in the C4 voting room, never, ever did I think they would come up with Star Wars as The Best Movie in The Galaxy. I had to smile.
No, someone, somewhere thinks Howard The Duck is the best movie ever made - and who am I to argue?

So many films, so little time...

How can any list of the top 100 movies not include "The Quiet Man". This was John Ford's favourite movie and is near the top of my favourites too as is Armaggedon, Top Gun and Jerry Maguire
to name only a few obvious ommissions.By the same token how can any list of the top 100 movies include "Breathless"?
Bump because it was on this evening and I did a quick search (because I was interested)
An interesting show for the clips and soundbytes from movie makers (but not Graham Norton or rent-a-quotes like James "I have this job because I am good, not really through a family connection or anything" King).
I find watching classic clips of good movies somewhat pleasant.

 Crack smoking peeps at C4, or were they allowing wet-dreamin' teens to vote for this list or summat?
And the reason that Gladiator made the top 10 is because the programme originally aired over a year ago IIRC when the DVD's were being sold by droves. If they did it again I doubt it'd be anywhere near as high... Which pretty much proves why all these kind of lists do is provide a forum to argue about how **** they are. ;)

I've been watching this tonight and didn't realise it was a repeat... it was particularly odd because I recall voting in the original online poll and thought tonight that it seemed to have taken rather a long time to compile the results and appear on TV.
Evidently I had better things to do than watch TV last Xmas season, unlike this year... ;)

If it was the top 100 worst films ever made I could quite agree with these placings.

the programme was a repeat from the one they originally showed last year, maybe that was why a few newer films weren't in it, but i agree they left out some classics and included some **** films :/
of course, you are all missing the entire point of THIS top 100...
at the time, there was a special film season on both channel 4 and film 4,
lots of the films that should've made the top 20 they didn't have the rights for... so they didn't include them at all.
so its completely rigged - and false.

I don't think anyone should be surprised at C4's list given the restrictions laid down by that company. They were/are absolutely desperate to attract a youthful - ie under 25 - audience for the sake of their advertisers. Seems to me that C4's Top 100 list fairly faithfully reflects that age group's favourite movies.
After all, if a bunch of teenagers/students want to vote 'Gladiator' as the sixth greatest movie of all time - ahead of 'The Third Man' or 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's nest', then good for them but I wouldn't take it too seriously;)

where was leon?, i'm sure c4 would have the rights to advertise it because they have shown the whole movie on c4 about 4 years ago
not necessarily.. film rights lapse or are for a certain number of showings so Leon may not have been possible at that point..
so many decent films missing.. not a real "open" list.
