Rodney Marsh today had his contract terminated by Sky Sports after making
offensive comments on air about the Asia tsunami disaster.

The former Queens Park Rangers and Manchester City striker appeared as a
pundit on last night's You're on Sky Sports programme.

A Sky Sports spokesperson said: "We have today ended Rodney Marsh's contract with Sky Sports.

"The decision was made this morning, following a review of his comments on
last night's edition of You're on Sky Sports.

"During the live night-time phone-in Rodney made comments that were offensive and inexcusable.

"An apology was made within the programme and Rodney's comments were edited and removed from later transmissions.

"These remarks should never have been made and Sky would like to offer its
apologies to those who were offended.''

For telling the Beckham 'toon army' joke.

:cuckoo:

PC-Brigade deliver swift justice once again. :(

I was watching it last night and couldn't believe he said it. I wan't offended myself but I can see that some people would. He did apologise after the adverts, obviously that wasn't enough

Unbelievable. The joke is at the expense of Beckham, not "270,000 dead, lolz!!!".
Sad to see that Sky employ such a bunch of twits to make decisions like this.

Sky Sports have gone OTT even if Marsh is a knob.

Ridiculous.

On the other hand, if I told an offensive joke on here I'm sure I'd get banned for it.
Although obviously I wouldn't do that.
(Well, not until the Forums Prediction League is finished anyway).

Well as a Sky employee it could be construed that his comments were those of Sky, I suppose.

Sky's loss... Shame as he was one of the few i rated on there...

Quite how the silly asses at sky could have interpreted this in that way, i'll never know.

Pahh. January not even over and have already aired the "Typical PC gone wrong" comment 3 times his month... :(

They sack Rodney Marsh for this, yet they stick with George Best??

This is the ridiculous double standards that are in broadcasting.

They sack Marsh / Ron Atkinson for stupid comments that physically hurt no-one. They sack Angus Deayton and John Leslie for having alternative (but consensual) sex.

But they employ Stan Collymore, alleged wife beater. Paul Gascoigne, alleged wife beater and alcoholic. George Best, alleged wife beater and alcoholic.

I'm not saying that Marsh and Atkinson were right to say what they did, because they were not. But they are hardly crimes on the same level as physical violence against another person.

That's why - you say alleged in the first paragraph, then say it isn't as bad as physical violence in your second. Had it been proved for any of them, then they wouldn't be working, simple as.

Just got in to read this - a bit silly to repeat the joke on air, but I'd agree it's hardly a sacking offence.

Oh well, I know Marsh wasn't universally liked, but I didn't really have anything against him as such. He speaks his mind when it comes to football and while he might make mistakes and be a bit harsh, that's quite refreshing in an age of endless cliches.

Steve1977
25-01-2005, 22:43
Get Big Ron on Sky! He was one of the best on the box. Much better than the idiot known as George Best (just how many times are people going to help this guy get better...only for them to throw it back in their faces!)
Rodney Marsh was a bit of an idiot anyway to be honest. Always baited teams fans with the "your team is no good" etc.
I like people who talk a good game, not people who just want to take the pee.

Crouching Tiger
25-01-2005, 22:56
I don't mind Marsh. He can be an idiot at times and is full of himself but he shouldn't lose his job over this. It's just silly.

Seems a bit strange to put those two in the same paragraph as if they are similar or the same.

Atkinson's comments and general attitude has absolutely nothing in common with Marsh's.

Atkinson is a very stupid and ignorant racist through and through. Marsh merely made a topical and rather funny joke at the expense of a rather dumb multi-millionaire.

Seems a bit strange to put those two in the same paragraph as if they are similar or the same.

I'm not saying they are similar, or the same. I'm saying that the things they did were wrong, and you could argue that it was right for them both to lose their jobs over them.

But there are lots of people who work in TV who do bad things and DON'T lose their jobs. And that is where the double standards come in.

re the other poster commenting on me using the alleged. The only reason I used it was to protect the forums since they have published my post. Most people know that the events I mentioned were fairly heavily covered in the press and, whilst there have been no criminal convictions brought, there is an awful lot of informed comment on all three instances.

Gazza is still on the telly all the time as some kind of superhero. Stan Collymore worked for the BBC after his alleged incident. And George Best still works for Sky Sports. I'm not picking on those three - there are hundreds of people who work in broadcasting with skeltons in the closet - but the fact that stations will happily hang one set of people for one thing and not another set for doing, what is in my opinion, a worse thing says it all.

Yes racism is bad. But Ron didn't physically hurt anyone with his comments. He just made himself look like a complete neandertal. One could almost argue that people like Ron are handy to have around as they remind us why racism is so abhorrent.

Rodney Marsh has lost his job over telling a stupid joke, Lee Bowyer picks up a small fortune every week playing for Newcastle.

Where is the balance?

As much as I despise Marsh and am happy to see him go I still think they got it wrong.

The joke was about Beckhams stupidity not the tsunami victims.

Besides Frank McLintock did something far worse on the same programme about a month ago and he wasn't sacked.

No he didn't. There was a thread on this subject a while ago, and everyone agreed that it was a storm in a teacup. Only t@xman and some nasty pieces of work at the Sun actually like to pretend there was any real issue.

I'd much rather have pundits like him who have a real opinion and will put their neck on the line for it than borings non-entities like Robbie Earle, Tony Cottee etc :D

Oi, leave TC alone. ;)
I have to admit that the sacking has shocked me and Soccer Saturday will not be the same woithout Marsh (love him or loathe him).
I think a public apology (which he made moments after) would have been more in line with the offence.

I can't stand the bland pundits either but Marsh just seemed to want to get his face on the telly and promote himself.

Sad. Rod was the best pundit on Sky. Who else would bet their hair on a team getting relegated, then have the balls to go through with it and get a skin-head on the pitch before a game?

Rodney Marsh is class!

Doubt that as they always used him on "your on sky sports " . I didn't like Marsh but don't like to see anyone lose their job for a silly incident like this. If he meant to offend someone then fair enough but he just didn't think.

Marsh has been an utter bore for years now. around the time of the Bradford staying up / shaving head thing he was entertaining and interesting to listen to. he's gone rapidly downhill since and has become a caricature of himself. he adds nothing of interest to GSS and his sole contributions of late have involved making pointlessly controversial (and often completely incorrect) statements and shouting over Stelling / whoever else is talking at the time.

that said I don't think he should have been sacked for this - he should have been sacked for having nothing of interest to say.

I still have no idea who the politically correct brigade are though.

Totally over the top sacking him, must admit the country is going PC mad and remembered a comment by Dustin Hoffman on the radio last week when he quite rightly pointed out almost all humour is at someones expense and we are getting to a stage now were humour is not allowed and be outlawed, yes we should not be racist or discriminate but we have gone too far with the culture of not being able to say anything without being shunned for not being tatally PC
