Anyone heard the single?

They've got all 'dance'.

Well kinda like when U2 went dance.

Seems slightly unfair on cannabis, if you ask me.

First time i read this i thought it said 'Canibals'.

Would explain what happened to the drummer.

disappointing fifth album

What's their excuse for the awful third album? Think the first two are great though.

More like: what's their excuse for the awful third, second and first albums, the shoddy singles, irritating tv appearances and rank gigs?

There aren't enough drugs in circulation, frankly.

You heard the first album ? Much as I'm tired of hearing them now...that first one was a corker. And they were excellent headlining the NME tour that year too

Frontman Kelly Jones has blamed the influence of marijuana on Stereophonics' disappointing fifth album - but promises to quit the drug for future studio recordings.

4. You Gotta Go There To Come Back

Great way to promote a new album ;)

The article is referring to You Gotta Go There To Come Back BTW

You're obviously a perseverant fella, carrying on listening to each new album and going to rank gigs despite an obvious dislike for them, expecially when you've been exposed to shoddy singles and irritating tv appearances.

First 2 albums were superb. The last 2 unfortunately were bland, very bland.

Seen them live once at Donington "A Day at the Races" and they were absolutely phenomenal with the majority of the tracks coming from WGA and PAC. Let's hope they've learnt from their mistakes.

I didnt even know they had made another album after the third one. First two were a bit poo as well.

1&2 were top, 3 they started to lose it and the 4th I think there was only one track on it. If the 5th is gonna be dance, I'm digging out my old def leppard albums and admit I'm an old over the hill fart and start complaining that everything sounds the same, sounds cr*p and that bloke looks like a girl ;)

There not good at naming albums are they.

How hard can it be?

First two albums are among my favourites of all time with WGA slightly ahead of PAC. The new single (Dakota) is pretty good IMO and hopefully a return to the pop/rock style of the first album rather than the dirge of the third/fourth albums.

Agree totally, quite like Dakota also. 1st album is a great listen and sounds fresh still today. Last 2 albums my dad asked for a copy of so that says it all!

Dakota isn't bad at all although I have a feeling the album will be more like JEEP & You Gotta Go There... than WGA & PAC.

I quite like the 4th album, but I will never get over these lyrics from Track 10 (Rainbows And Pots Of Gold):

I heard you're doing well selling art and everything
I like your stuff, good for you, I'll buy a piece or maybe two

I mean, COME ON! Clearly, NO drugs were being smoked when they came up with that schoolyard-quality rhyming!

Had a listen to their new album today and it's complete and utter tosh. Only two tracks stand out, Dakota and Deadhead (i think it was). One to avoid.

I shall buy it being a longtime fan but I'm not holding out much hope for it. I really like Dakota though.

I'm sorry, but the Stereophonics are so overrated as a band. They are untalented (compared to other bands), inconsistent songwriters.

Does cannabis really make your music turn this bad? Were Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Beatles, or any other early band this bad under the influence?

They will never bring out a great album, mark my words.

I quite like Mr Writer. A Thousand Trees is good but simple songwriting. Nothing on Performance & Cocktails is excellent, but all very samey. Word Gets Around isn't a great (although it's worth having) album, and their best attempt.

They add little to the music industry except ticket sales and very few pretty good songs such as More Life In A Tramp's Vest.

Give me Primal Scream, Super Furry Animals or the Manic Street Preachers for good British rock bands any day. All three of these were infinitely better live than Stereophonics.

That site is a bad piece of evidence, it's so biased. IMO Sgt Peppers was amazing, A Day In The Life is one of my favourite songs ever and the rest are almost as good. I don't trust anyone who goes bashing Sgt Peppers.

He's slating them for trying to be clever, and coming up with an amazing album that lyrically might not have much meaning, but musically it's incredible IMO. He's a fool and needs to look up "music" in the dictionary. Musicality is nothing to do with lyrical content IMO. Look at Happy Mondays, their music is excellent on Pills n Thrills but Shaun Ryder aint the sharpest tool in the box ;)

Son, I'm thirty
I only went with your mother coz she's dirty

Perhaps the best opening lyric to a song ever. :D

Happy Mondays had some fantastic lyrics! You obviously never really listened to them if you dismiss them based on Shaun Ryder & Bez's public personas!

Agree

Unfortunately the second verse isn't as good

I said dad you're a shabby
You run around and groove like a baggy

I mean, WTF?

One of the finest albums ever made though :notworthy

Stevie G - They had fantastic in our view lyrics, but not clever at all as some don't really make sense, and just sound humorous. Sort of like Sgt Pepper, but that doesn't make it a bad album.

BTW I didn't like your reply "You obviously never really listened to them". 2 errors, 1 I've got the flippin album, and 2 you don't have to listen to them to know the lyrics, you can get lyrics elsewhere.

OK. I was thinking of some of the other albums too. Bring a friend has some hilarious lyrics, as do most of the tracks on that. 23 party people has too. Didn't mean to offend, btw.

Gonna need a few more listens yet as I'm not convinced. I'm a long time fan and will certainly buy this album even though I don't need to :suspect: I still love the first 2 albums plus half the 3rd. The 4th I've hardly listened to cos i was so dissappointed... Bit too rocky for me though - I like the calmer songs of theirs, but I hate him being so shouty of late. Go back a few years Kelly, or is your voice ruined now?

The Bear
10-02-2005, 13:06
I agree Steve. The first half of the 3rd was ok, but I hardly listened to the 4th with the exception of Since You Told me It's Over which I really like.

Hope the new one improves on the last 2.

I really like this new album, has gone softer again after the 4th album. Track 9 (Lolita) is a favourite of mine and I really like the chorus on track 2 (Doorman).

Is it just me or is Kellys voice distorted on just about every single track? Can't stand over-produced crap. I like Dakota and Rewind so far. Not overly impressed with what I'm hearing though really.

Listened to new album a couple of times, not bad at all - Having been a massive fan after first two albums, kind of gave up on the them - although JEEP had its moments....

This is a return to form, of sorts at least...

In contrast, I think it's the best thing they've done since the first album. I thought all the others were dull.

Do people agree with me that Performance and Cocktails wasn't a great album, only OK to good? I have it, and find it OK but it's so samey and dull.

Agree or not opinions appreciated
