View Full Version : New Electric Guitar Recommendations..?
Got some spare cash and after selling my last electric guitar 6 months ago, am getting withdrawl symptoms (playing acoustic versions of rock songs is just plain bad :gag: ), plus its annoying having an amp/pedals/leads in a cupboard with nothing to plug them into!
So I'm looking for something ~£350, this is what I've had in the past over the last 9 years(in this order, never having more than 2 at a time):
Crappy copy strat
mexican strat
mexican tele
epiphone les paul
mexican strat
mexican tele
epiphone SG
jap jagstang
and probably a couple of fillers in between..
As you can see, Im pretty fickle..
best of the bunch was the 2nd tele(sold it on here about a year ago) and the 2nd strat(again, sold it a couple of years ago on here)..
Didn't really like the les paul, quite small and heavy, and really disliked the sound of the SG, even though it sounded fab in the shop...
At the moment leaning towards another mexican strat, as hopefully I'll be keeping it for quite a while so need something pretty versatile. I do however like the look of the epiphone 335 style guitars (the casino etc..), what are peoples opinions of those? I get the feeling it would be good as a secondary electric guitar but not the only one..
I'll be venturing into glasgow at the weekend for a good trapse around and trying them all out, but is there any guitars I should keep my eye out for?

You can't go wrong with one of these:

I got one a couple of months ago and it's superb. I got the version with Humbuckers instead of P90 pickups and have never been happier with a guitar. No noise, really nice neck, and the sound is fantastic, even better than my 80's Fender Telecaster. I've had loads of guitars over the past few years and this is definately my favourite! Paid about £180 in a local shop for it. Other ones you might consider are the Peavey Wolfgang QT special. About £3-400 and a quality bit of guitar for the money

How about a PRS Santana SE or PRS Tremonti - both nice guitars for around £399. Very versatile and good tone.

Levinson Blade perhaps. I use a vintage strat, sounds pretty good, decent action and has active tone controls so you can give a bit of boost to get closer to that Metallica sound, even with single coil pick ups. Does most things well and has great fit and finish.

Don't like them myself. Zero sustain, plus the strings are generally closer together than on normal guitars, so not much good if you've got fat fingers.
And seeing as no-one's the mentioned the pointy-guitar category, I guess I'd better big it up for Ibanez, Jackson, and ESP. Some fine guitars there if you look past the names.
cheers guys, I wouldnt mind trying something a bit different after being a bit of a fender whore for all those years:D
Ive written all your suggestions on a piece of paper and will be going around glasgow on saturday. Theres a new shop call guitar guitar which looks damn nice from the outside so will be giving it a whirl :)
if you like the tele, you could try the Peavey EXP series

It has the added advantage of having different pickups and Piezo style pickups on the bridge which means at the flick of switch you have an electro acoustic.
If you didn't like the SG, i wouldn't go for a jazz guitar like the 335.
Other makes to look at would be Fernandes and Godin.
I find Merchant City Music to be the best guitar shop in Glasgow, although I haven't been to this guitar guitar shop yet.

aye, merchant city is tops, I was going to go there, mccormicks(sometimes have decent offers on), that one on jamaica street next to richer sounds(cant remember name), and guitar guitar. Should have a cracking day!
bumfrog-I really like the look of that, and the electro-acoustic circuitry is a compelling concept, I will try and track one down to have a go!

I've got parker and it's got a similar thing (piezo's at the bridge) and you can get a splitter cable so you can plug into two amps if you so desire, so one amp you get the electric guitar sound, and the other the acoustic. Cheap way of doubling up a guitar sound and even if you don't split into two amps, having the versility is great if you play lots of different stuff.
actually, that would be another option, a Parker P38 - it's the cheap korean version of the american ones, but still really good and half the price. The design is a bit spikey but it's really light. :) (especially when compared to my ibanez les paul which is light putting on a tree)

:brickwall bugger! Never go shopping with a woman! Got to glasgow at 1.30, wqent to Mccormicks, and left straight away due to the huge amounts of goth kids just gathered inside for no reason! 4 hours later(after being dragged around every clothes shop), managed to get a 5 min look in guitar guitar before they closed.Nice shop, but I just didnt have time...
ah well, I'll go again in a few weeks...
you tried to go guitar shopping with a girl - you fool. It was never going to happen. :D
