You know what gets me about U2 at the moment?? They keep banging on about the fact that they hate touts on ebay making money out of them and then play right into their hands!! I'm sure the touts have made a killing on Manchester tickets due to the fact that it didn't seem like another show was gonna be announced. so people then panic and get on ebay and pay way over the odds. WHY couldn't U2 have been upfront right at the start and said exactly how many shows they were going to do FFS? U2 really annoy me at the moment...I think all that money they have trousered has finally dulled their senses.

They'll be playing 7 nights now at MSG apparently - it's turning into a BIG tour.

For me it's Manchester 1st night and Dublin 2nd night - with 1 to be added somewhere else. Manchester 2nd night is the obvious choice but I want somewhere more exotic ! Maybe New York ?!

Boozyuzi
15-03-2005, 11:37
The 2 latest MSG dates don't go on sale until next Monday (pre-sale today if you've got a code). I think the only way to get them is to go for "best available" rather than go pick your seating. Get your ticketmaster account set up first with your cc details etc'.

Dublin 3 could be happening.

Rumour is that the stadium shows will be a bit differant to the American 1st leg.

No eclipse shaped walkway coming out from the stage - there supposed to be 2 b-stages coming straight out from the main stage. Setlist's are supposed to be differant as well. Adam said recently that they would be playing some tracks from Zooropa and Pop which they totally ignored in the States.

SMS are awful! I work 9 till 5, but on promise of getting them yesterday, I got in at 8, and stayed here till 6 - no sign of tickets.

So I rang them up yesterday on the way home, got through to the operator (by selecting option 2 from the main menu) and gave my details - again.

'oh the tickets have been put on hold for despatch'

'but I phoned yesterday, and was told explicitly that they would be sent to me today, guaranteed'

'what must have happened is that the girl clicked on the 'hold' button instead of the 'despatch' button on our system here - the soonest I can get them to you is friday'

A truly awful, awful company - if I knew where they were based I'd head over and pick them up in person! I drive to manchester on monday night, this is cutting it far too close and the level of service I have received from SMS has been nothing short of abysmal.

Dear Customer

You have booked to see U2 this month. Pease be advised that we are in the process of dispatching tickets and they should all be received by the end of this week.

By the way did you know there's a whole load of tickets left for the Manchester show on 14 June 2005

No cameras are ever allowed at concerts, unless they have a metal detector on the gates how are they going to stop todays small digital cameras getting in.

In the 80s I managed to get a SLR camera and 135mm lens in and that was through a bodysearch

They never check the crotch area

Oh, and one more thing...

Tickets for Hampden are the same basic background as the Cardiff ones, but without the left hand hologram and coloured segment on the bottom left, and use standard TicketMaster font for the text. And they're red.

I'm a bit bummed about the support at Hampden, I might just turn up later as I think Interpol and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club are utter dirge. Compare it to some of the other dates with The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs, The Zutons, Feeder and Snow Patrol, and to be honest, I'm totally underwhelmed.

Still, it's U2 I'm going to see, not the support.

I'm going tomorrow and those are about the times I was working to. U2 have been doing 2 hours + so I would think they'll be on about 8:30 assuming there is a 11 O'Clock finish. (I could be completly wrong though!!)

Soo, I'll be looking to turning up at about half seven then... Gives me time to buy a beer, and I don't have to listen to the other dross. God forbid they stay on longer than the schedule says. Wish I'd know the support before I bought tickets, then I could have chosen another venue - would have been worth it to see another band that I actually like at the same time as U2.

I know I said I was going to see U2 and not the support acts, but I'm getting more and more ****** off when I think about how much I paid for the ticket. Are good bands scared of Scotland or something? Look at the current lineup for Live8 at Murrayfield for a good example... Apart from Snow Patrol, it consists entirely of either has been Scottish bands, or average/**** poor other ones.

I *heart* Scotland.

didn't go to your burger bar Dan but had a great night out at the gig only spoiled slightly by a few idiots being too smashed and a few more that decided that it was time for a 10up fight just in front of us.

A great set by Snow Patrol and also by U2 if a little spoiled by the politics being rammed down your throat. OK we get it guys and it's been in your music for years but I wanted to see you play not go to a benefit gig. A good selection of new favorite tracks and a good if not as extravagant as the old days set.

You must have seen that coming though after recent evets ?

We also had a few local idiots around us, not that they spoiled it but just irritated me as the night went on. We got through the gate into the inner ring which got us very close to the front. I though it was exellent. My legs and back are feeling it now though.

Stand out tracks.

I loved it, thought they were excellent. The political stuff was a bit too much at times and there were some local chavs around that were annoying, but other wise superb. Favourites:

Vertigo
The Fly (I think)
Sunday Bloody Sunday
With Or Without You

Barney_Tabasco
15-06-2005, 09:51
I don't have a problem with the political stuff at all. It adds power to proceedings and i do believe that over the years it has gone someway to making a positive difference so i don't deny them that platform at all. Plus, i strongly believe in what they stand for so all power to them - it doesn't ruin ANY of the music, just makes it stronger.

As for the chavs - jesus, what a bunch of dimwits. Drunk by 6pm, falling all over, starting fights, talking all the way through, being generally abusive. Really does give Manchester a bad name as the crowd feels exactly the same at whatever outdoor gig i've ever been to in Manc (especially Oasis, unsurprisingly). Been to outdoor gigs across the country and they are never that bad.

how did u go about gettin into the inner standing area?? was it first come first served?!?!

Whiting
15-06-2005, 11:25
The Inner Area was only to open to white wristband holders, initially. No idea how you got one of those. After a while, they opened it up for all before realising, about 20 minutes later, that a crush of sorts was developing as people tried to force their way through and went back to white wristbands only.

We observed all this from our seats at the side which afforded a fantastic view. Learnt my lesson from previous gigs there that if you stand in the wrong place, the camber on the pitch can seriously spoil your view.

TBH, I think they badly mis-judged the number of people the inner area could accomodate...there was huge gap at the back of the area up to crash barrier for the rest of the crowd...could easily have got a few more hundred in ; it gave the arena an odd look at any rate.

The traffic was a 'mare. Who's idea was it to have the '62 down to a single lane ?

Following on from my earlier post about the locals who owned the ground, I heard from someone that there were fights breaking out near the refreshment areas, not suprised really.

I consider myself someone who has seen plenty of trouble (not involved I add :) ) on nights out in South Yorkshire (some pretty tough places) & at football games around the country, but usually people who want trouble can find other people looking for trouble.

Last night I was pretty shocked at the attitude of some of the local lads who were acting in a threatening manner to average joe's from start to finish . I got in the inner circle without a wristband when they opened up for a short while. Found a cracking spot close to the stage. Then when the idots got in I moved back to a spot where I could enjoy U2 without being distracted by idiots.

Felt sorry for The Bravery for being cut short twice, to their credit they carried on in good fashion in what can be an arwkward slot as people are talking between themselves & only being 1/3 full when they finished. I think they could be pretty big if they follow up this Albulm with another decent one.

With Snow Patrol I saw the beggining & the end, I had a couple of cans on the way down but made the decision when I got in the stadium that anymore & I will be risking missing some of U2 later or needing a wazz alway through the set.

So I went for a mineral water only then took a toilet stop through Snow Patrol. My mate had gone after The Bravery and suggested that I should go when SP were on as the queues were shocking. After somemore chavs had pushed in I got a paper wristband put on so I could get back in the inner circle, when I returned I showed my band to a steward who gave me the nod, then was grabbed by another steward who though I'd tried my luck at the gate. Then it was time to wait.... for U2 :)

My mate is 6'4 I am 5'9 it is obvious that if you stand behind someone who is 6'4 you may struggle to see. We got a decent spot to stand very early and didn't move from it(toilet break apart) just before U2 came out a hand went on my mates shoulder then a voice (manc) went.

Manc :Move ****** my mate can't see.
Mate :We've been here since 5 you have just turned up + I can't move.

Trouble was the Manc was bigger than my mate :( 6'6 ish & looked like he enjoyed a bit of trouble as his face looked like it had been hit with a bag of spanners :) plus there were a few of them (ok we were puffs about it and moved away). As I said before I had been waiting to get to a U2 gig for too long, I didn't want any tension around while they were on. So we edged back a bit, where some poor sod would have a 6'4 (chicken) stood in front of him.

I have never waffled as much on a thread so consider this part 1. :)

Part 2 --U2--- will follow later, and boy things get a lot happier :)

Had a FANTASTIC day on the tuesday gig - got into manchester picadilly around 1:00, went for a pint, took a dip in the bookies, backed a horse that came in, with me being £30 up on that

Took a wander into Chinatown and we all went for a meal - then onto the concert. Managed to get some fantastic seats, just behind the dug out, to the left of the entrance tunnel - turn around and see Peter Kaye in the stand above us - the guy knows how to rock! ;)

We never saw any trouble, and I thought the set was fantastic - we paid £50 for our tickets in advance, and it was well worth the money, a great set :D

Can only agree with totally enjoying the Wednesday night gig, and Vertigo at the end was brilliant, I've seen comments regards Bono's political speeches at concerts but having seen them in the US in April the wife pointed out that compared to over there he said virtually nothing at Manchester, one plus for the US gigs was that they did seem more personal to the area they were playing when Bono talked to the crowd

I saw a number of people with small digital cameras at Twickenham yesterday. Don't know how they managed to get them in as there are bag searches at every entrance. Take your chance I suppose.

The concert was absolutely awesome. Stunning performance. Glad I recorded the Radio 2 broadcast of part of it last night - can re live some of it now.

Was in the inner circle and took loads of pics and movies on my Ixus 400 during the concert. Haven't checked to see how many are in focus yet :)

All the the staff from one of the the security companies at Manchester wore black suits. Many of them were handing out wristbands. I should know as that's where I got mine from.

All the the staff from one of the the security companies at Manchester wore black suits. Many of them were handing out wristbands. I should know as that's where I got mine from.

The wristbands at twickenham were handed out in the queue on a first come first served basis, great idea though, guaranteed place at the front for those that queued early and no crush at the stage.

I've seen them twice this week and was seriously considering going to dublin until I saw they ryanair ticket price, £270 return  even i'm not that much of a fan :D

How was traffic etc?

Sorry I didn't get to reply before you went to the Gig. I drove to Egham and then caught a train to Twickenham so I didn't know how the traffic near to the stadium was anyway. I must say I thought the organisation for getting people onto trains after the concert was superbly well organised and efficient. My only trouble Saturday night was driving back around the M25 to Kent. The motorway was closed between junctions 8 and 7 and it was an absolute nightmare coming off onto the A25 and then working my way back to the M25 - 1 hour journey took 3 hours. Still, we enjoyed the concert so much we just spent the time talking about it.

Off to see U2 at Glasgow tomorrow. Can anyone confirm what the runtime for the previous gigs has been ?

According to the ticketmaster website U2 are due to be on-stage at 8.00pm but that seems a bit earlier than I expected.

At the Manchester shows they came on around 8:20 and 8:45.

Just got back from London late last night. I was at Saturdays show and thought it was good but not great. Zoo TV and Popmart were far more impressive shows allthough the setlist was better than Popmart. They looked like they were just going through the motions when they played Sunday, Bullet, Pride and Streets. Bullet especially needs to be dropped but they can keep it in as long as we get Running To Stand Still as well. Highlight for me was All I Want Is You as I've never heard it live before. Still a great night out though. Far too hot though.

Glasgow tonight in the rain
It's the longest day, light until 10.30pm. :(
Maybe they will play A Sort Of Homecoming for the Celtic fans. :suspect:
4 shows to go that means another 8 Vertigos.

Totally agree with what you say about Bullet. It's never been one of my favourites and the Vertigo version just seems to peter out, with the 'Hands That Built America' ending.

The band seems to like it though - they have played it at nearly every show since the Joshua Tree tour, and it now seems to form part of a 'War and Peace' trilogy with Sunday Bloody Sunday and Love and Peace Or Else, so I can't seem them dropping it any time soon.

Off to Dublin on Saturday - hoping for some variety in the setlist.

City of Blinding Lights 5 - 1
Beautiful Day 6 - 1
All because of you 10 - 1
I still haven't found what I'm looking for 10 - 1
Elevation 10 - 1
I will Follow 12 - 1
Miracle Drug 16 - 1
New Years Day 25 - 1
Mysterious Ways 25 - 1
Out of Control 25 - 1

Sometimes you can't make it on your own 40 - 1

Yep - I was near the Edge's B stage early on in the gig, but I moved around quite a bit. I was nearer the middle when the banner appeared.

Well, I went to the Glasgow gig...

Have to say, it was one hell of a show, really good set, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Didn't bother showing up for the support acts, as I think both are dire, but arrived at about 8pm... U2 didn't come on till about 8:45, which was a bit of a wait. The visual display on the big wall behind was pretty incredible, especially when it got a bit darker and the displays really got going. For a stadium gig, the atmosphere was pretty damn good.

Big gripe - I hate Hampden as a venue, and tonight it was HORRENDOUS. The biggest problem was the size of the wristband only area; approximately half of the whole standing area, in a big deep looping arc. Why did it need to be so big? (ignore the walkways - they could easily be divided to pass into the non-wristband area). Admittedly, I was late there, but was quite far off to the right and the people I was standing with had been there for the support... and seeing it was a sellout, it was totally rammed from where we were, while there was a reasonable amount of space in the wristband area.

Hampden last nights was miles better than Twickenham on Saturday even though I was in a worse spot. The atmosphere was excellant thanks to the Irish and Celtic fans that were there. I reckon Glasgow is the next best thing to seeing them at home. The band were definately more into it last night. They played 3 songs that I didn't get on Saturday which was great.

Next stop for me is Cardiff with the roof shut.
Hopefully they will play Until The End Of The World & Bad. :n0rty:

Well after seeing them last night I was a bit underwhelmed.
For a start the sound was really terrible.Alot of it I`m sure was down to the stadium as you could hear the sounding bouncing off the stands all over the place, but the PA sound was crap too.You could barely hear Bonos vocals, and the mix was just mess. Also the volume was too low! Myself and my mates were about three quarters of the way to the front and we clould talk to each other during the gig without having to shout into each others ear or even have to lean into the ear to talk!

Now I`m not the biggest U2 fan as I said in my original post, but I went along for the event as much as anything else and even that disappointed slightly.
The stadium itself,Croke Park,is a sight to see in itself, one of the premier stadiums un Europe I should think, and it was full of course but the crowd didnt seem very lively to me.They just seemed a bit subdued throughout with the odd peak of excitement here and there.

The band played for a little over 2 hours.Their set list could have been constructed alot better I thought.A few of the "classics" bunched together would have been more apropriate for the night that was in it,rather than having them dispersed here and there. They played around 7 or 8 tracks off the new album, with a block of around 5 in a row which really left the crowd a bit cold.

I thought I might have been a bit prejudiced with my opinion not being a U2 fan,so I asked my mates after the gig what they thought as they are massive U2 fans and have seen them numerous times before. They were of the same opinion as me on the whole and just thought they were ok.

I wasnt a U2 fan before, and I have to say they didnt do anything to change my mind.I dont think I will go to see them live again.

The bad sound was totally unforgiveable.

I went to Twickenham last Sunday, and would agree with adox about the sound. Something seemed wrong with the mix - I was about a third of the way back, and at times the music drowned out Bono's vocals. Another fault was that the stage wasn't central, so those of us on the left of the stage were further away than those on the right - have never seen a stage set up like that in a stadium gig.

And it's all very well having an excellent stage, with loads of lights, but when half the gig is played in sunshine...it doesn't quite work. The whole show only got going when darkness fell...even Bono didn't seem into it til this point.

Still, the set list was fantastic! :)

Went to the Dublin gig on Saturday evening. Wow!

Everything was perfect. The atmosphere was simply electric, and the sound was flawless. The band were in spectacular form, and I had such a great time.

Supposedly much better than Fridays gig, and hardcore U2 fans are saying that Saturday in Dublin was the best gig the band have ever done!

It'll certainly be a hard gig to beat, and rumours are afoot that the concert was filmed for a future DVD release.

Well done U2! :notworthy

Agreed, superb show last night. Picked up a standing ticket for £40 (face value £60) from a tout outside just in time to see The Killers. They were asking £100 first and they would have got cheaper if we'd have waited til just before U2 came on but wanted to see the Killers.

Thought they were excellent and i've no doubt that they'll be headlining their own stadium shows in years to come. The roof was on so the acoustics were great and it also helped with the light show.

My first time of seeing U2 and thought they were fantastic live. They really know how to put on a good show don't they? Highlights for me were 'Where the Streets have no name' and 'Sunday Bloody Sunday'. Still not sure why they play Vertigo twice but overall I can't find fault with anything.

Top stuff.

Agreed, went for a quick swill in Reflex afterwards to let the crowds disperse. Getting out of the City Centre seemed fine but the M4 was a total nightmare. Back home at 2:30am

I qued to pay the parking meter, then it took 45 mins to get out of the car park, then 1 hour to get out of Cardiff City Centre, then 1 hour to get through traffic on the A48, then it was plain sailing home to Swindon. I got in my car at 11.00pm and got home exactly at 2.45am. so a 1 and 1/2 hour journey took all of 3 hours and 45 mins.

The police should have been in the city centre controlling traffic cos it was ____ poor, cos everyone was just cutting each other up and causing road blocks trying to get into the lane they wanted to be in.

Does anyone have suggestions about parking and getting to and from the stadium for future reference that is outside of the city centre, maybe walking to my car

clockwork67
01-07-2005, 12:13
went there for the second disision play-offs last year and they had a park and ride system - I think we parked at Cardiff Citys ground - got back to the car park really quickly but the M4 was still borked

Parked at Dumfries Place about 10 mins walk from stadium. Got back there pretty quick, paid (6 people in queue) and out of car park dead quick (by the time I drove past the ticket machine there was a queue of about 50!), took a while to get to A48 then onto M4. Took the A roads to M50 then M5 etc.. back to Manchester. Got home at 3.15am, so exactly 4hr 30 after the gig finished. Excellent gig though, both U2 and the Killers were top.
