i have a Geforce 2 GTS with no DVI and have just got a TFT - will this make a big difference considering it has DVI?

Not massively faster performance wise but it'll give you a nice boost plus the DVI is always a bonus!

Will it speed up desktop operations - or os it really just a boost for 3d games?

An 8500 is pixel shader 1.0 capable, which makes it a much more capable card. My sons PC has an 8500 (On an AthlonXP 1800+, and it runs Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 pretty well.

Where's this price from ? Looking to get a cheap reasonable card for my dad's PC and this would be very nice.

if its a le it will run at 250/250 just flash it to a normal one for 275/275 nearly all of them did it back in the day....
