just watching the writer of middlebrow nonsense 'closer' on bbc4 saying he cribbed the title from the joy division album 'one of my favorites', however i was under the impression the title was actually a noun ie 'clozer'?

I remember John Peel explaining that he always felt it was closer as in close to you, but then being in two minds and thinking that it could be closer as in closed ,after thinking of Ian Cutis's deadly intentions. I firmly believe it was as in close to you, I may be wrong, maybe the new film will spill the beans.

I read somewhere that even the band would quote the title with a soft and hard 's' at different times, to keep the title deliberately obscure...

Slightly changing the subject, has anyone heard the groups version of the VU epic 'Sister Ray' which I'm sure is on one of their rarity discs?

yeah it's interesting but a fraction of the length of the original (arguably the best thing ever)

It was on the album still another word that can have more than one meaning the album features previously unused studio material and a live recording of Joy Division's last concert. At the time of its original release in 1981, after closer, it came in a gorgeous 2 disc grey velvety gatefold cover http://www.lwtua.free-online.co.uk/jd/sthessb.jpg and whilst at times hard to listen to especially after the sparse production of closer it captured the emotion and raw power of the band really well. Sister Ray was recorded live at the Moonlight Club, London on April 3rd 1980.

It seems that Peter Saville changed his mind about the cover design part way through the process and that the Shadowplay bootleg LP (TADD 002) is based on the original design for Still.
Saville changed direction when he started thinking about the word "Still" in terms of "quiet" or "calm", and went for a more subtle and subdued design. It appears that the original Hessian sleeve version was supposed to include a booklet with photos etc, but this was dropped by Factory possibly because it was too expensive or because they preferred a more minimalist approach.

You live and learn. :)

Thanks for that.

Me too.

Imagination (Leee John) nicked the piano part for one of the tracks off closer for one their hits.
