Bought the Eye To The Telescope CD over xmas following the excellent performance on Jools a few weeks before. Surprised she hasnt had a thread of her own yet ??

Played it quite a few times and really enjoying it. Some of it is a little twee for my liking but definitely has a few excellent songs on there. Off to see here in a few weeks @ Norwich Arts Centre so will report back then

Cheers

Seeing her in London in March... quite like the album.

Also picked the album up before Christmas and it's certainly a grower.
"The Box" music channel is showing the video for "Black horse and the cherry tree".It seems to be a new studio recording which may mean a re-release for the album with the studio version replacing the live one...

Why on earth that track compared, to, say, "Another Place To Fall"?

GlennSh
22-01-2005, 23:52
Cherry Tree was the track that made me buy the album and is the first one I play to people I'm taking along to the Norwich gig. Excellent track, especially live...interesting to hear what the studio version sounds like as its the "live multi-tracking" which stood out for me

The problem with that track is she comes across as a one trick pony.
It's brilliant how she creates the sound live but it shouldn't be how people remember her.
Her singing annoys me slightly on that track as she reminds me of Lulu!

watching Black Horse and the Cherry Tree on Jools made me get the album, but i think that the best thing about that song is remembering how she performed it. There are some other very good tracks on the album as well, and it's been in the CD player in the car since i got the disc. Couldn't help but think that the middle part of the album sounds a bit Morcheeba(ish) anyone else feel that? Although that's no bad thing.

All in all very good album i think. Will have to try and catch the video for Black horse & cherry tree sometime, can't believe it's as good as the performance she gave on Jools though.

I'm finding the album quite disappointing really, and I love the female singer songwriters, another place to fall is a corker but towards the middle and end its just dull faux jazz rubbish.

Would imagine shes much better live but she needs to get 10 songs of the callibre of fall and cherry tree not 3 or 4.

I agree - was curious of how the rest of the album would pan out having only heard that one track and must admit I was a little disappointed that no other track was quite as "in your face" as that one, but having played it loads of times there are definitely some great growers on there

Same here - I think they'd have been better off just showing the Jools performance as anyone who hasnt seen it will be intrigued about whats going on

Saw her last week & had a great night. She's definitely one to watch out for this year. Only downside is she wasnt on that long (played the album & then repeated the single)

Worth catching if you get the chance

She has a good voice live.

Pointless Trivia time:

Her Mum works in a "Greggs" shop just round the centre from the store I work in.....one of my co-workers asked her for her daughter's autograph....and sure enough she came up with the goods.

But....he is a strange one and he does read NME.....so he'd probably appreciate any old autograph...... :cuckoo:

I was at the Oxford Street signing too! Shame that she's touring with a band as I'd like to see more of her doing the looping thing. Also a shame she didn't do any of my favourites from the album. Hopefully she will at The Scala on Wednesday.

I'm sure you were mere feet away from me as I overheard the words "Higgens","REM" and "Amos"!!

mikegray
26-02-2005, 11:00
That sounds very likely to have been me! I was stood talking to an older guy (late thirties) who I know from Nerina Pallot shows. We were in the second pen to be opened for the signing, so you may aslo have heard me bitching about that. ;)

Nerina is supporting Missy Higgins by the way, so hoping to score some tickets for that from her.

Lorne.t
26-02-2005, 12:15
I ended up having to sell my Missy Higgins Islington ticket as I forgot when I bought it that I was acting in a play for the School of fashion and design that night (and the night before).I also forgot that I'm acting in a student film the night of KT at the Scala but I've told them I have to be away by 8.30 at the latest so I can get there for 9.
I put my Missy ticket on ebay for cost price + booking and it sold for £21!

First time I heard it I was disapponted as it was completely different to Cherry Tree (a few were a little too Dido-ish for my liking initially) but give it a few listens as there's definitely some good songs on there so it may grow on you

mikegray
28-02-2005, 13:12
I think it's got a strong first half (I'm talking about the original, not the re-issue, as I'm not sure if they messed with the running order on the re-release) and then I think it goes downhill before picking up at the end with Black Horse...

mikegray
02-03-2005, 23:34
Saw her tonight, and she's got it. Whatever *it* is, she has it. There's an extraordinary sense of rhythm to the stuff when she does it live with the band. Catch her if you can.

Lorne.t

Scala gig was excellent,a lot better than expected.
Before she came on I watched the dodgiest looking roadies ever change the gear and was suprised when they didn't leave the building with the drum kit!
KT was a star, from her friendly chats with the audience to verbally abusing her "box of tricks" when it didn't work.
This was the first time I had seen her play a set with a full band and rather than a dull plod through the album became the opposite. The highlights were "Black horse" obviously, with the final chorus giving me goosebumps and amazing drum heavy versions of "Suddenly I see" and "Stoppin' the love",especially "Stoppin'..." with it's "We will rock you" style!
I was unsure about her Shepherds Bush show but I'll certainly be there now...

mikegray
03-03-2005, 18:27
Yup, I booked tickets for Shepherd's Bush as soon as I got in last night. I bet half the audience did.

She was on R2 yesterday saying she's playing Glasto on the Sat afternoon along with T in the Park & V2005 (not sure which day tho - I'm going to Chelmsford on the Saturday) so hope to see her there

mikegray

Splendid. She'll go down a treat at Glasto, I reckon, as she's a fantastic live act.

GlennSh
03-04-2005, 11:38
Forgot to mention. She played an acoustic version of Jackson 5's I want you back (with 'box of tricks') which was great.
She may have played other stuff as I happened to turn it on 1/2 way through

MetalGearAl
03-04-2005, 12:05
She played here at the Joiners a while back, but it'd sold out by the time I found out (plus I hadn't heard any of her stuff back then).. but if I can I shall certainly check her out at Glasto.

it was Dermot's show.
I think she's playing T in the park on the saturday. If she is I'll probably go along and pick up a ticket from the box office as they always sell them on the day, even if it's "sold out".

Lorne.t
18-05-2005, 22:38
Just back from her London gig and it was excellent as usual...
I got my normal gig position on the left hand side in the third row but still had problems seeing at times due to two 7ft tall men in the front row!!!!
My favourites were the same as last time - the "We will rock you" drum heavy "Stopping the love" and the Adam and the Antstastic "Suddenly I see".
Roll on Regent's Park though I've got a few gigs before then - 2 Roddy Frames,Missy Higgins,Magic Numbers (Camden Barfly!),Tegan and Sara,Psychedelic Furs,Kathryn Williams and Rachael Yamagata.

mikegray
18-05-2005, 22:52
Thought it was good tonight, too. (Although I may have been one of your 7ft nemeses, but I was in the second row, centre) - Stopping The Love is definitely my live favourite, although I didn't think overall it was as good as the Scala show.

See you at Missy Higgins and Tegan & Sara. You'll be seeing Nerina Pallot twice, by the way. Do give her my regards. ;)

19-05-2005, 09:57
She's playing cambridge next week but I dont think I'll be able to make that night :( (probably sold out by now anyhow)

Although as consolation I just got my ticket for Maria Mckee at the Scala (sigh :) )

Few new bits of KT info.
She's recording a acoustic version of her album and playing live on New years eve in Edinburgh.

The following is from today's Scotland On Sunday.

"William Lyons
Arts Correspondent

KT lets New Year Gig out of the bag

IT'S one of the music industry's most closely guarded secrets - who will entertain the crowds at the biggest New Year celebrations in the world.

Previous acts to play Edinburgh's Hogmanay party include Franz Ferdinand, Texas and The Kinks, all of whom were sworn to secrecy until the traditional November announcement.

But this week, Mercury Prize nominee KT Tunstall let slip that she will in fact be playing at this year's Hogmanay party in the capital.

Speaking to Scotland On Sunday the Scottish singer-songwriter said that after her UK tour and a new acoustic re-record of her debut album she will be heading to Edinburgh to play Hogmanay.

She said: "... and then I have Hogmanay in Edinburgh. I don't think they have published that yet. I probably shouldn't have told you that. I think they were wanting to keep it a secret."

The gaffe comes just weeks after she was forced to apologise to zzzDidozzz for claiming the London diva couldn't sing.

The gig will round off what has been a hugely successful year for the 30-year-old who, until a ground-breaking appearance on TV show Later With Jools Holland last October, was scratching a living performing in bars and pubs in Scotland. As well as making it on to the 12-strong shortlist for the Nationwide Mercury Prize she has played both Glastonbury and T in the Park, toured the UK with Joss Stone, and performed to sell-out crowds across Europe and the US.

Her debut album, Eye to the Telescope, has stormed the charts. So far it has sold more than 400,000 copies with an unprecedented 20% of those sales coming from Scotland.

Last night Pete Irvine, whose company Unique Events organises the four-day Hogmanay bash, said he was speaking to a number of artists and nobody had been confirmed."

The other shock news is an album she made in 2000 is currently at £105 on ebay with 5 days to go!!!!
I was bidding on behalf of her forum members as we were going to buy it between us so we all ended up with the tracks, then raffled the original but my top limit was £101!

Very interested to hear about the acoustic version of the album. After seeing her fantastic performance on the Mercury awards, we were remarking that it was a shame that the production on her album was a bit too 'clean' and poppy, so an acoustic version will be very interesting

She seems like a lovely lass to me but then what do I know. Here's the PB quote :

Singer-songwriter K T Tunstall is a
contender for this year's Geri Halliwell
Award for the fastest turn-over of staff.

In the last six months KT has gone through
eight hairdressers, seven make-up artists
and three PR firms.

Imagine what a diva she could turn into if
she ever becomes famous?

Have to say I've obviously never spoken to her but the impression I always get when I've seen her interviewed is she seems very friendly. Maybe she's a brilliant actress, then. Very talented, I have to say, she managed to get a better sound playing on her tod than all the bands on the Mercurys.

I went the the Shepherds Bush show last night and really enjoyed it. I quite like the album, but I am not a massive fan. I mainly bought tickets to the gig on the strength of her Mercury Prize performance, and I was not disappointed. Much better live than on record, IMHO. I was also pleasantly surprised that although the focus was very much on her, there was still a sense of it being a band performance.

Only let down for me was the 4 people who tried to come piling down the front during Black Horse... meaning that when we should have been enjoying the song there was general consternation around us while they pushed in front of much shorter people (as you can imagine, there were lots of women there) right in the middle of the song, only to clear off again once that track had finished.

Highlight was the huge Adam Ant style drumming for the last couple of tracks of the main set :)
