C4 only did this a few years ago.

They should ban albums less than 5 years old as well or else we'll end up with Keane in the list.

from them nominations I went for The Beatles, John Lennon, Darkness and Scissor Sisters. I actually found it hard to pick 10 that I'd heard, which is why 2 newer albums where picked.

Is Blood Sugar Sex Magik regarded as the Chillis best album? I'd rather Californication.

By far. Everything about that album is amazing.

It looked difficult to choose ten with the abscence of The Wall,The Bends or A Northern Soul.

Laughable list as well with a strange selection of albums. Who were their music experts? Pete Waterman? :cuckoo:

Radiohead - Ok Computer??????????

It's a good album, but is no way a match for The Bends. The media hype for that album was completely unjustified IMO, which is the only reason it is on the list.

I'd go as far as to say The Bends is probably my favourite album of the 90's.

37. Duran Duran - Rio

Oi

I have to say I'm glad Rio is finally getting the critical recognition I think it deserves.

Overall, not a bad list but at times very lazy (Blue, Automatic For The People - I don't think they're the best albums Joni and REM respectively have released) and some of the choices questionable - is there anyone who would call The Fat Of The Land the Prodigy's best album? Yes, Like A Prayer's in but where's Ray Of Light?

But... Channel 4 in yet another definitive top 100 list shocker - it's as bad as Q these days.

I would say that list (mostly) was a bit ropey, dragging out all the tired old 'safe ones' and throwing in a few obvious classic ones for good measure. It's depressing, but I know I'll end up watching this on telly and shouting at it for not being good enough... I am weak.

The one that always gets me in these polls is Stevie Wonder's 'Songs In The Key..', Now I'm Stevie's biggest fan (pre-80's obviously) and 'Songs...' has some killer tracks on it but it's far too sprawling and has far too many dodgy fillers. 'Talking Book' is by far his crowning glory.

Anyways, I'd agree that there are some hilarious entries in there but you come to expect these things. However, I did actually find some that would probably be at the very least in my own personal top 50. So, I've done my bit and went for :-

De La Soul - '3 Feet High...'
Kate Bush - 'Hounds Of Love'
Massive Attack - 'Blue Lines'
Nick Drake - 'Five leaves left'
Cure - 'Disntergration'
Prince 'Sign O The Times'
Stone Roses - 'Stone Roses'
Nirvana - 'Nevermind'
Beastie Boys - 'Pauls Boutique'
Jimi Hendrix - 'Are You Experienced'

But....where's MILES DAVIS???

Because they've already recorded the z-list celeb talking head quotes and need to be able to slot them in.

Rather than guessing what the top ten will be, it will probably be more fun to guess which 'celebs' will be on reminiscing about how they queued up outside HMV to buy Sgt Pepper when they weren't even born at the time...

Nah, give C4 some credit, at least they didn't take the ITV route of assuming everyone wants to hear Britney, Busted and all that pop idol rubbish, maybe they didn't pick the best albums by the artists, but at least the artists are mostly credible, with a few notable exceptions.

It's on this Sunday, from thecustard.tv:

• 8.00pm The 100 Greatest Albums Channel 4 to midnt
Even though the same channel conducted a similar poll about five years ago, the fact the average viewer has a memory of three years has enabled the compilation of another pointless poll which will see The Beatles occupying much of the Top 10 like tar on a smoker’s lungs. Contributions come from Michael Stipe, Paul Weller, James Brown, Lou Reed, Ozzy Osbourne, Duran Duran, Kevin Rowland of Dexys Midnight Runners, Johnny Marr of The Smiths, The Human League, Public Enemy, Slash of Guns 'n' Roses, De La Soul, Yoko Ono, Arthur Lee of Love, Talking Heads' David Byrne, Sex Pistols' manager Malcolm McLaren, The Libertines :oh-hum: , Shaun Ryder and Bez of The Happy Mondays, Brian Wilson from The Beach Boys, Dave Gilmour of Pink Floyd and Terry Hall from The Specials

Why do they have to supply a list in the first place? Are we not capable of supplying our own entries? Pre-defined lists always make me suspicious, like there's some agenda going on :suspect:

Look, it's all more than likely a fix anyway.

Clearly they will only give you the options for albums where they have plenty of footage and comments.

In a similar vein, do you think the poll will be "as voted", or do you think they will switch allbums around depending upon how much material they have? These shows tend to rattle through the earlier albums and then show lot's more footage and talking heads when you get down to the top 20. I would wager a bit of switching goes on once all the votes are in as we can't have more footage and comment on album number 12 than album number 1. That's just my opinion for what it's worth (not a lot).

Of those listed, I quite like a few of the others including Imagine, not so much the title track though, but probably would have voted for

David Bowie (2) Ziggy Stardust and Hunky Dory - Ziggy's probably my favourite then there's quite a lot I like equally
Doors - though I've gone off it a little and prefer LA Woman to this first LP
Joni Mitchell, Blue - though I admit it's a lazy choice
Lou Reed, Transformer - very lazy choices here though, I loved New York
Velvet Underground & Nico

Kirsty MacColl is a terrible omission - probably Kite

I would have liked to vote for Elvis Costello or Bob Dylan but am not as familiar with particular LPs as some of their others

and I have lots of personal favourites which are nowhere to be seen

I assume current availability to encourage advertising and sales from this would be criteria too.

With the exception of two tracks 10000hz Legend was indeed poor, but Talkie Walkie was a return to form. Much as I like them, I'm not sure any Air album would make my top 100 though.

No Pearl Jam?
Only one Queen album?
Only OK Computer, where's The Bends?
Led Zeppelin IV? No thanks, they've done much better

I don't know why I keep getting excited about watching these C4 'greatest' programs. Once again they've just gone for the most popular over what may actually be the best. If it was really talking about the greatest albums there would be things like:

Silverchair - Neon Ballroom
A Perfect Circle - Mer de Noms
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral / The Fragile
Pearl Jam - Vitalogy / Binaural / Yield
Queen - Sheer Heart Attack
etc, etc...

These are albums that actually gel and flow and mean something, as opposed to a collection of songs with a few hit singles on it.

Must say though I am pleasantly surprised to see they included Jeff Buckley. Although I don't find the Grace album particularly listenable, I can admit he deserves a special place.

And I don't think Nirvana's Nevermind is worthy of anything.

Typical, laughable, cheap TV.

They should at least have the honesty to call the show Favourite Albums Of Tiny Minority Of Channel 4 Viewers.

It seemed like they got the whole thing backwards and muddled up.

No Guilded Palace of Sin, no The Basement Tapes, no The Band, no Live at San Quentin, no Honeyman, no Small Change, no Gris-Gris, no Raw Power, no Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, no Trouble Man.

Not my top 100 albums.

In fact, I'd probably only include a handful of the ones on the show in my top 200 albums.

But then, I do have a lot of albums.

All of the albums were pre-selected by ch4 anyway, so it wasn't a proper public vote as such... I don't know if that's a good or bad thing. I suppose it could have been worse. Were Keane included? ;)

Voted not only by channel 4 viewers but by channel 4 viewers that can be bothered to register a vote for one of thier dullard 100 greatest easy ways to make TV programme without even having to think about anything more than rounding up a few celeb heads.

Can you substantiate that last comment in light of your strange choices for greatest albums (and I own those albums too apart from Silverchair and cant see why they should be included).

I notice that there is a ground swell of dislike for Nirvana from people who got sickened by the constant airplay of 'Teen Spirit' (even Kurt would'nt play it anymore). Most of these detractors seem to be college or ex-college students into Tool and Incubus.

I understand your 'flow' comment, but don't think it's necessary for a greatest album, but its nice when it happens.

Maybe I'm a bit biased as I had never listened to Radiohead until I heard OK Computer. My mate was giving it away as he hated it and thought I might offer a welcome home.
To say I was blown away by it was an under statement, its certainly in my top ten of all time. Another mate recommended The Bends as a better alternative, I just about ran to the shop to see how much better it could be !
IMO it was'nt as good, a mere shadow of the completeness of OK Computer and subsequent albums have never matched it, although they have been interesting.
I think the bends is the most popular amongst early fans of the band, when RH were more of a rock band and had less of a progressive feel, it really is a polarising record and seems to echo the same state of affairs that existed with two similar bands, The Beatles and The Beach Boys.
Both produced classic hit songs and albums and each released a progressive album (Sgt Peppers and Pet Sounds. It could be argued that the Beatles did it again with The White album), both have polarised opinion, but its clear that the vast majority of those fans would rather listen to the other albums.

It depends what you define as a greatest album : most popular or most musically progressive ? both are relevant, but its interesting that OKC achieved both results in this limited poll. Of course the results are skewed, but it was up against some stiff competition (did'nt have the Meat Puppets included as they would , of course have won by a landslide), its also a product of its time as it is still a recent record. Its difficult to tell if it will last as testament over a long period of time, but there is no doubting my initial reaction to it.

For me, The Bends is by far my favourite Radiohead album - but then, that's probably because I spent a lot of my teenage years listening to it on repeat (which also explains why Automatic For The People is by far my favourite REM album)... I love Pablo Honey too. I like OK Computer a lot, but It probably wouldn't make my top 50, let alone 10. It's just too inaccessible unless you're going to listen to it all in one sitting.

Strange how many of the albums I listened to aged 12 - 18 I still listen to regularly and would still make my top 100 (to name a few off the top of my head, Nirvana's Nevermind, GnR's Appetite For Destruction, The Doors, Blur's Modern Life Is Rubbish & Parklife, Oasis' Definately Maybe, The Beatles' Sgt Peppers)... I guess having very strong memories attached to many of those albums means they'll always hold a special meaning for me.

Also surprising was the number of albums on that list I own... 48 of them!

You're right I should explain. I don't want to turn this into a debate and would just like to get my thoughts across - I think I have a very odd opinion in that I really don't see what was so great about Nirvana. Most of their stuff was shouty noisy rubbish that all my friends seem to adore but I see nothing in whatsoever.

Yes, there were a few wonderful songs and I actually think Teen Spirit is a phenomenal song that has almost become underrated by constant airplay. It really does deserve a special place and I personally never get tired of it.

Kurt Cobain never did anything better than that though. All my friends give me these shocked looks whenever I say that, but for goodness sake most of his music was just noise! People praise his voice, doesn't do anything for me.

As I said, just my opinion. I find In Utero a much more listenable album than Nevermind, and even then I can't listen to most of the second half.

Not sure if it’s been noted elsewhere in this thread but to not have ABC’s Lexicon of Love anywhere in this chart is nothing short of a disgrace. If I could think of a good reason why they’d want to fix it in order to exclude this I’d accuse them of doing so.

You should listen to your friends ;) :)

I cant believe your saying that In Utero is more listenable  Kurt actually made it deliberately less listenable to distance himself from the pop songs on Nevermind. It's without doubt, the better album though, far more mature.

I would love to say you have'nt given it a fair hearing, but I reckon you probably have and you certainly sound like you have a legion of mates keen for you to give it a go. I think its the voice thats putting you off judging by your other choices and the fact that it swings into punk territory instead of traditional rock.

You might like the unplugged album better, though you would still have to contend with his voice.

Thanks for answering my question, its always interesting to hear others constructive comments.

Yes, but I'm trying to understand and its not a damning assessment.

Theres obviously a very strong guitar feel, SRV, Satriani, VH etc and sort of prog rock feel with Rush and Dream theatre. Musicianship features very highly, so Kate Bush makes sense (you have still picked the wrong albums mind you ;) ), Toto is more musicianship, Saga is more Rush. So where does Brian Adams fit ?? Not a great musician, so this must be from another era err maybe.

I think you stole Alice in Chains greatest hits, it does'nt fit anywhere in this puzzle.

I think I will have to post my albums and you can have a go at working that little puzzle out

Anyway, which albums would you discard from that bunch and which would go into the top 100 ?? That will at least allow me to sleep nights ;)

Unbelievably poor selection. Myself, the g/f and a mate were sitting there and for virtually every album that came up it was "Hmm this ones crap" or "Never even heard of this one". I think I and my mate liked a total of about 8 of the albums and the G/F about 10 (cos she like the beatles).

These definately were not the greatest or most popular albums of all time but more students top 100. But then again I never do well at these things as I cant see any attraction in the incoherent mumblings of radiohead, the simplistic songs of the beatles or tuneless rolling stones.

True, but his band was always made up of good musicians & from 1982 to 1987 he could craft a nifty tune when he put his mind to it ... his output post 1987 sucks mightily though :D

I think you stole Alice in Chains greatest hits, it does'nt fit anywhere in this puzzle.

:D Paid £4.00 for that one - I like 4 or 5 tracks by them, all of which are on that cd.
I've also got 'Blue Lines' & 'Mezzanine' by Massive Attack & a Siouxsie & The Banshees compilation which fit a lot less well into my 'collection' than AIC do - still like 'em though.

Anyway, which albums would you discard from that bunch and which would go into the top 100 ?? That will at least allow me to sleep nights
