View Full Version : [Sky Sports] Where is Martin Tyler?

Noticed that Martin Tyler hasn't commentated on the past few Sky games and Ian Darke has taken the mic. Anyone know if he's left Sky or is just ill/on holiday or something?

Haven't know him miss 2 games on the trot before. Not sure if they said anything before the game yesterday or today?

I was wondering this, not too keen on having a boxing commentator in Darke :(

I was wondering this as well - not been mentioned anywhere on Sky. I assume he's having a little break?

I like Ian Darke though - seems such a long time ago since he was the 2nd football commentator on Sky before they switched him to the Boxing! :D

Ian Darke used to be the commentator years ago on the Monday Night Football, I don't mind him although I am surprised they have used Rob Hawthorne instead.

He was covering one of the games on football first last night, but not sure why he's missing the live games.

Ian Darke used to do the Monday Night Football when Sky first started showing the premier league.

It's great to see Ian Darke get big live games again - he's the best commentator on Sky IMO.

Thread on this over at digitalspy. Rumours that Tyler has fallen out with his bosses - they think he isn't the commentator he was and Gray agrees.

Darke was the boxing commentator on BBC Radio before joining SKY. His calling on the big fights was wonderful to listen to.

Tyler is probably a bit miffed that his beloved Arsenal aren't doing quite so well at the moment. :D

Got to agree, Darke speaks sense and is easy on the eye  so to speak :D

The banging you can hear on your TV is Glen McCory trying to get on the gantry.

If that is true - it sounds similar to what happened in the boxing. Glenn McCrory got axed from commentating for similar reasons - ironically a falling out with Ian Darke.

Doesn't McCrory do it anymore !!!! That shows how long it is since I watched a fight.

Jim Watt does the big fights with Darke. McCrory gets the undercard with Adam Smith, or is a guest on the presenter panel.

It just doesn't sound right though, when you hear Gray, you expect Tyler. When I watched the game yesterday it felt like a Prem + game

As was said earlier, Tyler has been ousted, Darke is the new main man.

Personally I'm glad, nothing worse than a biased commentator.

If he was commentating on, say, West Brom vs Blackburn he would still managed to mention Arsenal more than the teams he is meant to be commentating on.

And no more 'OOOOnnnnnreeeEE!' 'VieiraaaaAAAAAA' 'ReyaasSSSS'

Darke is rubbish IMO, came up with a load of tripe a few times in the game today.

Tyler is deffo a gooner, he wrote the official club history.

EDIT: And you can sometimes spot that he's wearing an Arsenal tie when they cross over to him in the commentary position.

It must be ten years since Ian Darke last commentated on a Premiership match. I thought he was taken off football for not being much good at it. Wasn't that why Rob Hawthorne was brought in? I don't rate Darke at all and there were a few times during today's match where I got the impression Andy Gray doesn't rate him that highly either. What's the betting that Clive Tildesley will soon make a big money move from ITV to Sky?

The only SkySports commentating Tyldesley is good enough for is FanZone.

"It's 1-0 here between AK Barokick and FC Hoopenhag in the qualifying round of the humpty dumpty intercontinental cup, but of course, we've seen sides come back LIKE MAN UTD DID IN THAT GLORIOUS NIGHT IN BARCELONA."

"Well, AC Milan have just beaten Real Madrid 2-0 in the CL final. But, you get the feeling that had it not been for 3 wrong off-side calls, a lucky deflection, a disallowed goal, and the wrong colour shirts, it could, even should, have been Man Utd lifting that trophy."

He is ******* *****.

Tyler was(is?) ok, just over-egged it (like all Sky people do), and is too biased to Arsenal.

The one thing I don't like about Clive Tyldesley is that there are at least four "smart saves" in every match he's ever commentated on. At least now Big Ron's retired we won't be treated to teams attacking "to the sound of the trumpets" and strikers scoring "for fun".

Don't forget that whenever any team is only 1-0 down with 2 minutes to go and they get a corner he always pipes up with "The game looks all over now but you never know, look what happened in the Nou Camp that famous night"

Whats the odds on him saying the following if ITV get the Barcelona v Chelsea game in a few weeks?

"Of course this was the setting of that astonishing night in 1999 when Manchester United lifted the trophy with those two last minute goals"

or

"This is the first time an English club has played in the Nou Camp since that army of Manchester United fans packed the stadium on that fateful night in 99"

or

... you get the drift!

More from DS forums:

Apparently the rift is due to Martin demanding that he gets to do the big games: He wants to do the Arsenal / Chelsea / Man Utd / Liverpool games, even if they don't fall as games which he would normally commentate as part of his contract.

But Vic Wakeling thinks Martin is getting big-headed. People subscribe to Sky to watch the football, not to listen to Martin Tyler.

...and rumour has it that Sky have already signed Tyler's replacement. The problem is, this "replacement" (who may be a Derby County fan) can't leave his current employer until after the 2006 World Cu

Shame about Martin Tyler as in my opinion he and Andy Gray are/were the best commentary team around by a long way.

Ian Darke is good though - good knowledge and enthusiastic about the game.

Sky do have a good pool of commentators now unlike the BBC and ITV. John Motson the other week for the Plymouth vs Everton game was atrocious. Don't know if he's not doing many games these days or what but he made loads of mistakes and gave the wrong names so many times. I assume he still does Match of the Day? Had no reason to watch it since Football First launched on Sky Sports. :)

So Tyler is a gooner.
I did think so, but I read an interview with him last year and he said that he supported some non league team.
I should have realised from just the Manchester United-Arsenal games
- in 99 when Giggs scored one of the goals of the decade when we looked dead and buried. Any neutral commentator would be going mental, but MT (barely raising his voice) 'A magnificent goal by Ryan Giggs.
- in 2002, when Wiltord scored, MT screamed 'WILLLLLLLLLLTORRRRRRRRRRRRDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!' like Andy Gray was cutting his balls off.

I can't remember the last time I listened to the normal commentary. I'd sooner have a laugh with fanzone on.

It's just a shame that they don't do it with the Football League too. Then i could get rid of the ramblings of Gary Birtles. :gag:

Who is that then? :?:

Motson's son is a huge Derby fan but Motty himself isn't - although he obviously has some sympathies for the Super Rams.

But would Sky poach Motson now? He's well past his prime isn't he?

Francis
17-01-2005, 20:35
Tyler and Gray were a good pair, not quite the same without both of them. Although Tyler has been going overboard with "Ooonnnrrreeee"'s and "Piiirrresss"'s for a bit now, really was starting to grate.
As long as Alan Green never gets a lookin as his replacement I'll be happy ;)

Was on with Andy Gray so perhaps all the rumours weren't true? Could have just had a holiday couldn't he?

Mind you he did seem a bit false in going mad when the own goal went in, like someone trying too hard if you know what I mean?

Darke was awful on the Arsenal/Newcastle game, never asked Gray anything interesting and just left him scrabbling around to say something. Waste of time.

It's funny you should say that cos I thought the commentary was quite good yesterday.

Let's see who gets the biggie on Wednesday night - Andy Gray will be there without fail but will it be Tyler or Darke?

Zebedee
25-01-2005, 00:06
I have to say that listening to Ian Darke made a refreshing and pleasing change. Hearing the same old commentator week in week out gets monotonous, so I say get a few more in and then continuously rotate them throughout the season - Martin Tyler, Ian Darke, Rob Hawthorn, Clive Tyldsley, Alan Green, Peter Brackley & Jonathan Pearce - I think that would make a good combo who all have varying degrees of pro's & con's.........
