Can anyone tell me what height the rear speakers should be?

I am looking to buy the Atacama Nexus stands for them but don't know if I should get the Nexus 7 (28" tall) or the Nexus 10 (40" tall).

Any suggestions?

AFAIK there is no 'set height' ... it will depend on your seating position ie the speaker should be head level when you sitting in the position you are watching the DVD. For example setting the rears at 4' will be useless if you are sitting on the floor and conversely setting them at 18" will be useless if you are sitting on a sofa.

Dolby themselves reckon rear speakers should be 2-3' above head height, so unless you lay on the floor or sit in a hole stands are no good.

This is borderline anal man, as long as they are not on the floor or glued to the ceiling, you should be ok, but I'm not the one to criticize. :D

Try 'em other places you might be surprised, I can suggest one if you're having trouble thinking of any.

or just try moving them around until you like how they sound, I've had my setup for 2 years now and still constantly moving them

That's what I've been doing and I have now found actually following Dolby's advice gives the best result for me, 'spose they should know as it's their standards that are used to encode the stuff.

Don't know if DTS have any standards, if they have, they're bound to be different.

Actually, you should look at Atacama SE1000i's - I've got a pair of Eltax's on top of those, comfortably above ear height as Dolby recommend.

I have a pair of Nexus (can't remember what size exactly), they are about 2' above head height when I'm sat on my sofa. Must be around 5 or 6 ft high. Sound is excellent.

Even the humble Videologic Digitheatre DTS manual recommends placing the rears above head height. If they were head level you'd easily identify each speaker as a point source defeating the intended purpose of the rear surround field.

Mine are on £20 adjustable stands from Argos, which themselves are on (a) a chest of drawers in one corner and (b) a coffee table, itself standing on a raised hearth. AV experts swoon with fear !

Both are about 7 ft in the air (with copious amounts of BluTak to stop vibration, naturally) and they work a treat.

My Dali rears have their tweaters on the underside of the speakers so I have to have them wall mounted.
