its time for me to renew my contents insurance.
I was just going to stick with Halifax until I realised the cost has jumped a lot.
So I was wondering what would people recommend as the best value insurer?

Have a look at http://www.insuresupermarket.com/home/default.asp to search about 60 companies in one go.
Also reduce your building costs. Our house cost £70K about 3 years ago, its recently been valued at £110K and thats what our insurance company wanted for the rebuild cost, we moved insurers and had the rebuild cost set at £70K again and thats saved about £50 on the cover

thanks I'll look at that one searcdh one that looks helpful.
I originally went with the halifax because they were 80 quid cheaper than anyone else.
My buildings insurance is trhough factors so I can't change that unfortunately
Try esure (http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/click?p=4846&a=60823&g=27424) (yes I know it's got that annoying ad with smug Michael Winner) but their contents quote on-line is very very good (easily beat my previous renewel from Direct Line)

egg were by far the best for me, got a lot more cover (accidental, away from home etc) for about £20 more than i was paying for next to no cover through tesco
Insurance Eye were best for me.
We saved a packet with Frizzell (http://www.frizzell.co.uk/main)

I've just moved to a flat, and for £13,000 contents with accidental and all risks, esure (http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/click?p=4846&a=60823&g=27424) offered £190, Endsleigh offered £400 online, but then rang me back and offered £185, then I rang a local broker www.wbwilson.co.uk and they sorted me for better cover than either Endsleigh or esure (http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/click?p=4846&a=60823&g=27424) for £155.
Im with esure. Used www.moneysupermarket.co.uk I think to search a few companies, and they werent the cheapest, but with the lowest excess, £0 voluntary excess, £2.5k away from home cover, and new for old, accidental damage to property and contents, was £152 a year, so I was well pleased. You really need to look closely at what each company is offering, or rather what they arent ;)

i went with egg last year, charcol this year, £60 for windsor flat for £20k cover, £80 in slough as its a much worse area. play with the excess, i was not fussed about claiming for £50 stuff, just if the whole went up in smoke, so stuck it up as high aspossible

thanks for all the info. I checked them all out and finally went with esure (http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/click?p=4846&a=60823&g=27424).
they had the same stuff as my halifax renewal except the halifax one was unlimited for contents claims but thats no big deal since I'm saving nearly 40 quid.
