Anybody else having problems with the R2 release of family guy. The second disk just freezes during the last episode a few minutes in and just dies. My samsung 709 seems to make a cracking noise at the same time

My disc freezes during Running Mates, or whatever the episode is called when Peter and Lois run for School board. My Pioneer 535 just stops and a few seconds later crashes. It works fine on my DVD-ROM so it looks like a player-related problem

The problem occurs around 17m35s in to the episode but depending on player it occur at a slightly different time.

The fault occurs on:

Pioneer 525, it crashes the player

Sony 725, it jumps to earlier point of the episode (pausing just before the fault and pressing play can sometimes get you past the fault)

PowerDVD 4, crashes the app.

Well, this is really strange.

As you may or may not know, I reviewed Famliy Guy for DVDTimes and that review was based solely on a pair of check discs that were played repeatedly on various players (my brother kept on nicking them and watching them downstairs!) and this fault never cropped up. Got my discs the other day from Play247 and just checked them because of this thread and I get the same fault!

Pioneer 626
Disc 2, Episode - Running Mates, 17:54, player freezes and then crashes!

I got my copy from Play and apart from the menu crashing on the second disc when we left it for a minute or two I've had no problems with it on my Wharfie 750S.

Matsui DVD122: Halfway through the one where they're pretending Chris is dying, when they're in the classroom, it freezes up. However if i press play or fast forward then it carries on as normal.

Chris

Fault also occurs on a Toshiba 2109, the picture breaks up, makes weird sounds, not to play rest of episode.

Korben D
19-11-2001, 17:25
tried to rewatch it again to see if the problem still exists. Now when i press fast forward its's ok but a few seconds later the sound and picture completely breaks up. Should have said its in the episode dyin if i'm lying or whatever its called. When chris explains he is dying to the teacher and the teacher ******** the jewish guy for wearing the hat in class.

was looking at my second disc today and it has two 'rings' that have a slighlty different gold colour to the rest of the disc...these rings are both around .5cm in width, one is on the inner edge of the disc, the other on the outer edge of the disc....anyone else see this - could it mean anything?? (doesn't usually but thought i'd check).

Oh, FFS.

I've just packaged up the Holy Grail SE for return to Play for a refund because of the subtitle issue, and now I see that the Family Guy DVD has problems too. This disc was posted yesterday (if only I'd spotted this thread sooner I might have had time to cancel) and as I have a 2109 I'm guessing I'm going to have to return it too.

I can see I'm going to have to get a new player soon.

The question is: Are Fox going to do anything about it? I've sent them an email - bet they don't respond.

nah, its got to be a disc fault (much like the Simpsons r1 problem) cos its happening on far too many brands of players (including what everyone seems to think is the perfect brand, Sony)...

i've got another copy winging its way too me from Play247 (for my brother) so i'll check that one out when i get it - probably gonna have to return 2 copies at this rate!

i'll also try and contact fox

Yes, if a disc doesn't play on a sony player then something is very wrong with the disc.

This is also the 1st disc to ever give me any problems.
Add the Pioneer 737 to the list.

I've got a different fault, but one that is really doing my head in...

I'd watched the first 3 episodes the other day and could swear they were in 5.1 (the back of the box backs me up on this).

But one I went to watch some more last night, I could only get them in stereo (including the episodes I watched the other day).

Other discs are OK in 5.1, that's why I feel like i've gone mad.

Anyone got any insane ideas?

Fox mislabelled the cover as DD5.1

The discs are actually DD2.0 Surround, also Fox forgot to include the surround flag so it will play in Stereo unless you put your decoder in to surround mode manually.

Pioneer 535 - Disc 2, Episode "Running Mates", player freezes and then stops at 17:54.

Spoke to FOX this morning about it, they aren't aware of any problems with this title.

Happened on my Pioneer 626 too. What can we do about this? I'm getting a bit peeved off now. First the Simpsons now this. If I send it back it's more than likely that the same thing'll happen again:mad:

certainly seem to be faulty disks, don't they?

Same in my Pioneer dv-505, i'll give it a whirl in the ps2 later to see if it does the same. I've noticed a lot of the peeps responding have pioneer players but not exclusively, the plot deepens.......:)

i've let Fox know about the problems (as i'm sure others have) so i'll let you know if/what I hear from them.

I'll be getting a 2nd copy in the post tomorrow so i'll report again if that ones the same.

I can’t believe DVD is still having so many problems. It just gives people like my brother (who cannot see why dvd is better than VHS) more ammunition against the format, and with the constant compatibility problems plus the dodgy encoding, he is becoming increasingly annoying and harder to argue with.

Come on, get it sorted!

Hmmm, just tried this in my ps2 and the first disk plays fine. Disc 2 locks up part of the way through the second episode and i can't even watch any of the proceeding episodes. I get an error message on screen. The discs look immaculate, they should e as i only bought them on wednesday. Hope they get this sorted soon as i currently can't watch most of the second disc !!!!!

ark383 (welcome to the forums :) ) and anyone else whose discs work - could you please check the data side of the 2nd disc as I now have 2 copies of Family Guy - both exhibit the same fault and both 2nd discs have the two 'rings' i mention in a post further down the page where the gold colour is slightly brighter...

yep, I have 2 rings, one about 1cm from the centre of the data area, the other is about 2mm from the outerside edge.

My play fine on my machine (Pioneer NS-DV55) but has problems on my friends Proline 1000. 2nd disc does seem to have a ring about 1 cm from the centre but not a 2nd ring.

Maybe thats why it plays OK on an Arcam player, because it's more a DVD-ROM player than anything else !
God I wish I could have made that sound more technical, but Sunday afternoon has my brain warped.

I have only one ring, about 1cm from the inside of the disc.

So it crashes at the same place on my Pioneer 626 and my PowerDVD ROM. Is it worth sending back as it seems it's more than likely that this will happen again.

I have a gold ring near the center of the 2nd disc as well (haven't been able to find the second ring though) - Running Mates and If I'm Dyin' I'm Lyin seem to play fine though. Dodgy batch..?

BTW I've got a sammy 709.

I've not heard anything, but then I'm not in direct contact with them. I plan to swap one of my copies for another one in a local shop sometime tomorrow, see if I can get one that actually works?? as it seems to be a hit and miss affair.

I finished watching these on the weekend.

I have also the two rings and had no problems with the discs on a Sammy 709.

Terrible layer change on the first disc though (just before Stewie is packing his bag) happens mid-sentence...

Yep, my sony 735 dies in running mates too. There do seem to be rings on my disc......

I only just got this far through the episodes, it's the only disc I've had a problem with (that isn't obviously scratced) and I've got about 500.

Does sound like a disk problem, anyone heard back from fox?

Is it worth swapping it with another faulty one with play (where I bought it) or trying to get fox to swap it?

Yep, those two episodes on the second disc crash my Sammy 709 as well. However, both episodes played fine on my LG 8160B DVD-Rom drive so I'm not sure what's up with the disc - there aren't any rings on it like some peoples.
