View Full Version : Princess Mononoke R2 (Jap) To Have Literal Subtitles....?

Bedford

I just read that it seems the chances of Mononoke Hime having literal subs included seems high, someone translated the back on the box and it had 3 sets of subtitles listed.

From the original Post.

I only know a few kanjis, which includes the kanji for Nihongo and Eigo, and the backcover shows 3 subtitles logo with these information:
1. Japanese
2. English ... Japanese...
3. English
Based on that, I guess #2 is English subtitle based on Japanese audio, and #3 is English dubtitle

So it is looking very good so far, just need 100% proof now.

I've no idea how long to expect amazon.co.jp deliverys to be, i ordered the BR soundtrack and that shipped on the 10th of this month so it should come next week.

Crosses Fingers,

Quick delivery, literally

A bit off the topic, but I noticed a strange bit of subtitling on Kiki's Delivery Service (R2).

There is a scene in which Kiki is offered a room at a small bakery... as the woman who owns the bakery talks to her, she offers Kiki a cup of coffee - however this has been translated in the subtitles to a cup of hot chocolate - I wonder whether this was a deliberate change as it was considered that a child (Kiki was 13, if I recall correctly) would not drink coffee.

Stupid observation, I know... but I thought I would share anyway :)

regards, Tim...

re: Kiki - I've read about this before and basically I think you've summed it up in a nutshell :)

The subs are dubtitles (same as the English Dub) so follow the changes made in the English Dub (which were the bare minimum). Its not at all detrimental to the story so no worries there :)

My first order from Amazon.co.jp took about 10 days :)

The second took about four weeks :( . Stamped by Mount Pleasant but no customs charge even though it stated DVD 9400 Yen on the declaration. No big yellow 'printed matter' sticker on the second one, though, which the first had to make it customs-proof.

Similar story here Art-

My order from Amazon Jp took 7 weeks!
I'd already emailed them after 5 weeks, they then sent out a replacement order free of charge.

The replacement order turned up in two days!

The orginal order turned up a couple of days ago, no customs charges, although it had a Mount Pleasant stamp on it.

Dont know whether to flog my extra copies, Yamadas + Totoro anyone??

What do you want for them Budge?

£25 each?

Ive decided to buy a couple more Ghiblis from Amazon Jp with the proceeds, ease my conscience a bit! :)

Just read this on the AoD forums:

"Can't resist the temptation, so I finally bought it. I compared the first 10 minutes with R1, and the English literal subtitle matched perfectly. Btw, there is no English dubtitle, but noone cares about it anyway, right? And I still hate the ugly dvd case."

Good news i believe.

kanedaa
22-11-2001, 15:06
good news! friggin fantastic news! :)

the first 10mins contains a LOT of different text on the dubtitle, so this has got to be a dead cert literal subtitle track :)

just checked my statement, £56.88 for the Mononoke sets, now to wait for delivery.

Thanks for the offer Budge but I just got shipping notification from Amazon.jp for my Mononoke order which also included most of the Ghibli titles. I was gonna cancel Totoro and Yamadas and get those two from you but they beat me to it.

If you don't mind me butting in, I'll take them for that price if they're still on offer...

Oh and how on earth has anyone managed to order stuff from amazon.co.jp ?
Do you all speak Japanese or is there some magical way of getting the pages displayed in a language I can actually understand ? :)

kanedaa

the only thing particularly difficult with Amazon is finding what it is you're interested in using English words, and the pages are bloody slow to load...

for help with the searching/checkout process use this GUIDE (http://www.bedford.net/teep/acojp1.htm)

for general page translations (doesn't work/shouldn't use in the checkout though) use an online translator like Babelfish (http://babel.altavista.com/)

there were some vouchers about but I think they've all expired now, plus there is a Loyalty scheme/recommend a friend thing that Budge was trying to get to work, but I don't think he had any success??

Or you can just open a english versions of amazon and the jap version and buy summat at the same time, only way i got through it was i can read a bit of katakana (japanese use it spell out english words) so it makes it near enough possible.

Sort of gave up on the refer-a-friend thing..
I'm sure someone with a little more knowledge of Japanese than me could work it out though.

That was fun :)

I think I've just ordered both Mononoke DVD sets but I wont be entirely sure till they turn up ;)

Best part was trying to work out what the katakana translation of my name was. Thank God for Google.

I think I definitely need to go on a Japanese language course....

I never put the katakana version of my name, and they didnt say anything about it, and have processed both orders i've made with them.

Lee Johnson has posted a comparison between the new R2 Japanese release of Mononoke and the R1 at his always highly informative website, HERE (http://website.lineone.net/~lawrencium/hime.html) and be sure to check out the pictures! Like he says, quality isn't great (the pics) but oh man is there a difference in the colour!

Can't wait for my R2 now...

Just out of interest, I've ordered something from Amazon.co.jp and I was wondering if anyone knows how long it usually takes for something to get delivered. I'm getting worried now because its only got 3 weeks left to turn up...

Btw, they've taken the money out of my credit card already.

Thanks

I got shipping notice on the 10th of this month and i've still not received anything, i got mononoke notice a few days ago.

if its not here in 4 weeks will be emailing them straight away, then send by dhl world mail which isnt the fastest form of delivery in the world.

Kai
25-11-2001, 01:16
Yeah, I got my confirmation on the 13th of this month. Nothing received yet. My e-mail just shows a load of garbage because I haven't got a font viewer for Japanese. Anyone know a good one for Win XP?

Matchstick
25-11-2001, 11:37
Try going into the Regional And Language Options program in the control panel.
Select the Languages tab and click on the Install files for East Asian Languages box.

If I remember correctly this will install the language files you need but you will almost certainly need your Windows XP disk to finish the installation

For those who ordered the Making of someone on AnimeonDVD has just confirmed it has NO subtitles whatsoever apart from a making of featurette that we all knew would carry them. He seems quite miffed actually, as he obviously never read the debunking of the rumour the discs would have english subs!

Thanks for the tip Matchstick, but I've already done that, it's the emails that Amazon.co.jp send me which are scrambled into garbage.. I don't think that it's possible to mix both languages in the same page. My webpages from Amazon Japan are loading up fine.

Some good news!! My video arrived today! So my Japanese studies really have paid off.. it took like an hour to get through all the menus to order this. This video isn't even for me!! Am I nuts?? :)

whats that last post all about then bedford m8? :D

just had a look through the Mononoke Film set - the transfer on Disc 1 is bloody amazing, it definitely beats the R1 - not my a great deal but going on a 5minute test i'd give the R1 9/10, and this 10/10...have to check that edge-enhancement that has been mentioned though.

grr - why can't they even hint at 2002s first DVD release? the anticipation is killing me!

no subs - it is a shame, but I'm using it as an excuse to seriously start learning Japanese (got a CDrom and everything :) ).

Also, Nausicaa.net (http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/mh/MakingOfMH/) have a translation online for the first disc - surely now the DVD is out more will follow and I'm quite sure some mad sods will create subtitle scripts for it in time.

oooo cool, what have you got? I've been considering learning Japanese for the past couple of months since my interest in Aninme has grown, and it'd be nice to learn an extra language I actually care about! I was gonna take a course at uni but no courses available :(

Bedford
29-11-2001, 21:11
If you really want to learn japanese, two books i found useful were "lets learn hiragana" and lets "lets learn katakana" which can be found at amazon.co.uk for about a tenner IIRC. thats what i used to learn the 2 basic alphabets, the books are basic but very effective, i learnt hiragana in about a week using just the book

A word of warning.. don't go into learning half heartedly. Do it because you want to because you'll most likely lose interest once you see the sheer size and scope of the language. You'll need all the motivation that you can get, especially when self-learning. And it goes far beyond just the language too, to really learn, you have to delve a little into the culture too to understand why certain things are.

I've been learning for a while (at uni), but I'm nowhere near any sort of level to understand anything but basics really.

Kai is right, when i first looked through the books i though i'd never be able to do it, but dont try and learn everything at once, and its only the alphabets i learnt, i can read, but god knows what it says :D

Katakana is the best language to learn first if you want to pick out words as it is the alphabet that the japanese use to spell the foriegn words.

I dont think any non-native japanese person will ever be able to "read japanese" or "speak japanese" full theres so much to learn, but it is definately fun to learn, and i'll admit its because of anime that i decided to start, i just wish i was in a form of education now where i may have the chance to study it further.

[Gambatte kudasai]

Nani ka

only joking, it means summat like good luck or keep trying or something similar i think.

There are a couple of pretty good books called Japanese for Busy People - the beginners (vol 1) has a green/blue cover and the more advanced (vol 2) has an orange cover. These are a good start for learning the basics in conversation as well as counting systems, days of the week, colours etc etc and in learning the hiragana, katakana character sets plus a handful of Kanji characters. You would also be advised to pick up a good Kanji reference (or Flash Cards - there are such software packages available) and good English - Japanese dictionary in romanised format (romaji).

A great site for all sorts of Japanese reference material and software (much of it free) is Jim Breen's site at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia: Jim Breen's Japanese Page (http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/japanese.html) - this is far and away one of the best Japanese resources available on the net. Definitely check out the free Japanese Word Processor (search on JWPce) which runs on English windows (no need for a Japanese operating system) - there is a link to this from Jim Breen's page.

Hope all of this helps.

regards, Tim...

Just to stray back to the original thread a little... :D

My Mononoke DVD arrived from Amazon.co.jp yesterday (very speedy), haven't reall had much of a chance to look at it yet though (although the stuck together cases are a bit naff).

Thanks for the info on Japanese everyone - Its been an ambition of mine for sometime now to 'seriously' start learning and now is as good a time as any so your info has been of great use.

As for Mononokes packaging - I'm in two minds about it personally. I would have really liked a fancy boxset type design, but then the method they've gone for doesn't look too bad IMO, plus the covers are superb and as a whole the Ghibli films look right together on the shelf.

Anyone here have Yamadas or Cagliostro? The new cover for Yamadas is on the Ghibli trailer now, matches with the rest of the releases but the disc is identical.
