Search disabled so apologies if there is already a thread for this. I have looked and can't see one. Anyway...

Playing R1 French Connection on a Wharfedale DVD750, I get shimmering horizontal bands. At times they are very hard to ignore. Have there been any reported problems with this disk? The reviews I have seen say that the picture quality is fine, so have I got a dud on my hands?

I watched it last night on a Tosh 2109 and it seemed fine. Lend it to a mate to test perhaps?

Are you watching on a widescreen tv (dvd player set to 16:9 mode) or 4:3 (player set to 4:3 Letterbox)

If it's 4:3 (player set to 4:3 Letterbox) then thats most proberly whats causing the shimmering because cheapo player are not as good at downconversion.

I am watching it letterboxed on a 4:3 telly, but I have had the player for a year and not had this problem on any other disks, (though I'll start looking more closely now!).
Certainly, I'll lend it to a mate who can play R1 and see what he says. I think it may be one of those situations where specific disk and specific player just can't seem to get on. Annoying, 'cos its a cracking film!

It's an excellent disc -No problems on my Toshiba 2109 or Samsung 709 or indeed a new LG710 -Just checked for you.

Never heard of any problems either.

Could you try your DVD player on another TV and/or with a different SCART?

If the movie was transferred from a Hi-Def master and not tampered with (ie. small detail filtered out) then it can cause the affect with downconverting anamorphic to 4:3 letterbox.
