How long is the unrated version of Dead Alive (Braindead)? Checked on IMDB.com and the Australian one seems longest, 100mins,...

Was gonna get this from Futureent.com, is this the most complete version, if not which one should I get?

Not sure how long it is, but it is cut. The best version is the 'Red Edition' / 'Blood Edition' 2 different names for the same disc and its German R2. Have a look here (http://www.splatterhouse.net/reviews/a-b/braindeadred.htm) and here (http://www.splatterhouse.net/reviews/a-b/braindeadred2.htm) The running time all gets a bit complicated with the pal speed up. IIRC there is about 7 minutes of footage missing from the US unrated.

As an alternative to the Red Edition, I've just received the Spanish DVD of Braindead which is fully uncut and cost around a tenner from Alive DVD (http://www.alivedvd.com/). It took around a month to arrive but it eventually turned up this weekend! Picture quality isn't the greatest, but it's adequate enough and is in the original 1.66:1 aspect ratio. I'm happy with this release until one of the studios gets around to releasing an all-singing all-dancing special edition...

BTW, the running time on the Spanish disc is stated as being 105 mins, but it actually comes in at 100 mins - I'm guessing this is down to PAL speedup as mentioned by Paul.B because it is definitely the same uncut release as my VHS.

The full version of <I>Braindead</I> should run just under 104 minutes, and a PAL video version just under 100. I suspect the Spanish running time rounded it up to the nearest five minutes.

Both US versions are cut - the unrated version runs 97 minutes, while the unwatchable R-rated version runs 85 minutes. Bear in mind speedup issues don't apply to NTSC, which means that even the supposedly long version is missing some seven minutes - though this is almost entirely made up of parochial New Zealand subplots that the US distributor didn't think would work with US audiences: the gore is intact.
