Just like to know the question in the title?

I've seen lots of references in the classifieds section and have no idea.

Thanks for any help.

OK. Criterion is like any other film distributor on DVD: MGM, EIV, FOX, PARAMOUNT, UNIVERSAL ETC ETC ETC ETC ETC... However, they aren't really.. very unique. They only release a few titles, and are only a dvd company. u'll never see a "criterion" film at the cinema for example. What they do is take classics and make them into incredibly good dvds, full of extras, usually 2 disc sets. They are much more expensive than most dvds. They only do a few ewch year, and thats why. But, you'll know when u buy a CC (Criterion Collection) title, u'll usually geta good deal. However, recent releases on R2 such as silence of the lambs and armageddon by their actual releasers have outdone the cc titles and have actually ended up being better... still, cc have some really good titles.

Yonathan Gal: Interesting comment about the two Criterion beaters. I think maybe the HKL Killer is already set to beat the Criterion. Care to mention a few other titles? I can't think of any other re-releases/ region specific releases... there has to be a dedicated thread on this.

The forthcoming Robocop releases would be a good title to look out for, theres still no official word as to which version (directors cut/CC version) has made it through BBFC, or to the dvd release anyway.

Yes there is.
The R2 project has confirmed it will be the full whamy Directors cut & uncut.

Set for a February 11th release, the disc is said to include the Director's Cut(!) and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. Extras are listed as commentaries by Director Paul Verhoeven and Screenwriter, deleted scenes, "Flesh and Steel" documentary, a production reel with DC scene build, photo gallery, two original featurettes and storyboard comparisons (with commentary). A Robocop Trilogy boxset will also be released.

Robocop CCs are everywhere, go to any Virgin megastore or Tower records or anywhere, there are too many of them, some sell them at MSRP of $40, some even put it on sale for $35 or $30, it never really was OOP as in unavailable.

But still, put OOP in the title of the auction and some dumbass will buy it :D

Great news there about the commentary, I was starting to think it won't be included

Thanks all for your comments.

So where do you buy a CC from? Just a normal shop? and if so how do you know it is a CC?

********* (http://www.*********.com) are also excellent for criterion discs and are probably the best supplier in terms of price/speed of delivery. Amazon are also excellent, but make sure to use a voucher when buying from them to get the best deal.

Also, you can look at the 'Sticky' threads at the top of the 'DVD and Movie Review' forum for more information about CC's.

think there was a thread about this last week, no search though, bummer.

Here's a short article and comments from Bullets n Babes (http://www.bulletsnbabesdvds.com/article.php?sid=615&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0) and R2 Project (http://www2.r2-dvd.org/article.jsp?sectionId=2&articleId=3018)

EDIT: I really need those typing classes :brickwall

Are all Criterions region 0, 1 or is it different for each film ?

It seems to be Criterion's policy not to region-code their discs unless they're forced to by the rights holder.

So <U>most</U> Criterion discs are region-free, but exceptions include titles licenced from Buena Vista (<I>Armageddon, The Rock, Chasing Amy</I>) or Toho in Japan (the Kurosawa titles, <I>Kwaidan</I>) and a few one-off oddities like <I>The Passion of Joan of Arc</I> and <I>The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie</I>.

I used to compile a definitive region guide in the DVD Reviews forum, but half of it seems to have vanished! But if the title you're interested in begins with the letters L to Z, you're in luck!

Michael: have you still got it on your hdd (a-l list)? If so, maybe re-send it to the admins/mods and maybe they'll put it back on again? :)
