I would have thought Touch of Evil by Orson Welles would qualify as the best. It has one of the longest and most innovative tracking shots ever put on film.

I like 'Jackie Browns' introduction in Tarantino's film of the same name. The music plays a big part.

Apocalypse Now isn't too bad.

Come to think of it, a few Hitchcock films spring to mind.

Rear Window - opening with blinds closed then they slowly open. Pan and track round the buildings before finally landing on Jimmy Stewart.

North By Northwest - Credits influential. Long shots of city. Pan featuring dozens of people before finally landing on Cary Grant, and tracking him outside to the taxi.

To name but a few

Star Wars ANH
Saving Private Ryan
Raiders of the Lost Ark

With 'Ryan' are you refering to the US flag and the old guy going to the graves or the opening battle cos' technically, the opening battle isn't part of the opening sequence....

...but never mind him - SPR's first 25 mins kicks ass!

Well obviously one has to mention Swordfish! Best dialogue and very stylish colors and camerawork.

Some others but I'm not sure if you mean an intro sequence, like with James Bond movies, best and longest being in World is not Enough, or just title/credits intro?

Yonathan Gal
17-11-2001, 20:52
ain't watche dit myself, but a mate said that swordfish had the ebst opening of 2001....

Rooboy: Yeah, had forgotten that one. Saving Private Ryan has gotta be one of the greatest ever.

Some that I like.

Star Trek: Undiscovered Country. (Praxis goes BOOM!)
The Time Machine (Titles and music are masterful)
Raiders Of The Lost Ark
Terminator II
Titan AE
Goldeneye
The World Is Not Enough (esp. the underwater tie fix. Hilarious!)
Back To The Future.
Toy Story II
Pulp Fiction
Fight Club
Star Wars original Trilogy. Openings to all 3 are cool.
Dragonheart
Outbreak (Opening makes me want to put on a biosuit!)
Pitch Black
Tron (dated now but WOW back then)
E.T.

That'll do for now. Of course there's MANY others and that's why we
are all going rapidly bankrupt. :)

Used to be really into screenwriting a few years ago and one particular theory I learned about was that the opening 10 minutes of a movie should be like a miniature version of the whole film.

One film that really fits this theory and is also one of the finest examples of screenwriting IMO (even with a voiceover, which we were always told was a big no-no) is "Goodfellas" - a truly amazing opening sequence.

Other favourites are "The Fog" (John Houseman's ghost story) and most recently "The Emperor's New Groove" - seriously! ;)

Bad film, but I always really liked the title sequence for The Island of Dr Moreau. The Frankenheimer one.

It all goes downhill from there of course.

This is a good one. This also includes one of my favourite 'Director's credit' shots where the door closes shut with Sergio Leone's name springing across the now all black screen - fantastic stuff!

With North By Northwest as a perfect example, Hitchcock always made sure the title/credit sequence played an intricate part in what was to come.

In North By Northwest you've got the the criss-crossing lines (double-cross), and the eventual dissolve to the building and the reflection of the city in the building's windows (Mis-identity, mirroring something else).

Well, the fact you read up on it was a start to better things. Plus, if everyone gave up because they didn't think they would be 'great' we'd have only one film released a year. I'm personally going to stick at it, because you never know! ;)

In my opinion, Sam Peckinpah’s woefully underrated Cross Of Iron features one of the most inspired and memorable title sequences ever to grace a film.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS

It starts with an opening montage of documentary footage – most of it from propaganda newsreels – charting the progress of the Third Reich. Starting off with the Nazi’s rise to prominence, it acts rather like a mini history lesson, taking the viewer past the crushing defeat at Stalingrad and right up to the film’s 1943 setting, where the wehrmacht are retreating across Russia. Aside from using colour documentary footage to blend the title sequence seamlessly into the film, the entire montage is, in a truly inspired juxtaposition, scored to a German children’s choir, creating a uniquely chilling and disturbing sequence.

swordfish, Star Wars films, and Indiana films I'd say. though the negotiators also pretty good, and gladiator (the battle in germany) I liked that too.
