View Full Version : Sony VCR with an S-Video output?

I'm going nuts here! Argh! I've went through a couple dozen sites and 15 models and nowhere could I find in the "spec" descriptions a mention of whether a given VCR model has an S-Video output or not!!
That's like the most important thing there can be on these ancient things and it's not listed
Does anyone know a model that has, or is it so standard that every player just has one?
Because my 1997 player, SLV-678HF does not, I'm stuck with standard composite White-Red-Yellow crap.

I don't think Sony has ever signed up to s-video on standard machines (ie the s-video format). You'll have to buy a s-video player to record s-video.
They were of course the Betamax kings :D
JVC do s-video.

No I don't wanna record S-Video, for that you do need an expensive s-video VHS recorder/player, I just mean an s-video output, you know, the black round cable instead of one yellow...

Ours all have SCART sockets, so go ask on one of your yankie forums.

AFAIK you can only send s-video through a s-video socket so why do you want one if you don't have a s-video signal?

What are you talkin' about?
S-video is just at least twice better in quality, no bleeding of colors, etc, than a regular composite yellow connector.
What, are you using standard composite to watch your DVDs? I'm sure you use s-video cable, and I want to watch the very few movies that I had to buy/keep on VHS due to the lack of DVD OR LD at the moment through s-video also, so that the image quality is not total crap :o

Lenny Nero - us Europeans use something called SCART, which is far more prevelant on our TV's and VCRs than component or s-video connectors.
At this point I'll point you towards my previous advice..

Lenny, are you saying you are able to watch a composite (yellow cable) signal through a s-video cable?

Lenny,
you can buy a passive converter that converts a composite out to s video style connector. This will be a small inexpensive adapter that will enable you to use an s video cable. I am not familiar with US outlets, but places like Radio Shack should stock them. If there is such a thing as an ordinary VHS player that has s video connectors, then the chance is all it has is one of these devices built in. You will still have 'VHS' quality recordings but you may get a slightly better picture quality by virtue of the fact that you are using a decent quality s video cable to to get the signal from a to b.

No Sony VCR ever made (other then digital and professional lines) has a S-Video out. this also applies to any other brand, other then an actual S-VHS deck form the likes of Sharp, Panasonic, Philips or JVC. As such you`ll need to change your deck if you really want this connector:(

That's right, as every DVD player, ever Playstation and everything now has S-video output to get the signal through a decent cable as it separates the color information (Chrominance) from the brightness (Luminance), which prevents nasty things like color bleeding and dot crawl and helps increase clarity and sharpness.

Aww that shucks, I was afraid of that.
Well at least eliminates the opportunity of another item to waste the money on, gona stick with my old VCR, it's for only these 5 movies anyway:
Separate Lives
Killing Time
12:01
Howard the Duck
Wild Palms miniseries
Thanks Cable Monkey and Justin, and I'll try AVS forums Bapapapa

I don't believe that mate. I know how S-video works. Got any links? :)

Yeah of course, don't really know what kind of links you want, I can't link to every single model and most online stores don't state full specs but I'm yet to see a DVD player without S-video output, maybe some cheap ass RCA piece of crap, I can't believe you're watching your DVDs through regular yellow component video output, tsk tsk.
Here are some players, scroll through specs and look for Audio/Video or S-Video:
Sony:

And here is Playstation 2 S-video cable on your Amazon UK

And here is what I'll get for my VCR:

Oh forgot, here is the auction page, still up, from where I won my Sony LD player, has two photos, second from the back, shows S-video outputs, even this LD player's got two of them!

Are you on crack mate?
:D Seriously Lenny, I don't think you've read (understood) one word of my posts. Is it my Scottish accent?
I use S-video with my DVD all the time. You asked for info on a VCR with s-video input/output and I said this isn't available.
Those links would be as well going to pictures of LA mate cos I never said you couldn't get S-video per se -I said you couldn't get s-video on a standard VCR.
So WTF are you talking about mate and can you send me some of those tablets you're on? :)

So what am I suppost to think from that besides that you want links to those DVD and Playstations and proof of S-video on them and cables/converters? :D

:) Re-read your first post -It's refers to VCRs only. Then read (I'll not say re-read as you obviously didn't read it the first time :D) my first post.
I've not mentioned DVDs or Playstations anywhere.

ARGH!!! :p
But you've quoted me talking about PS2s and DVD players, just as I've shown above again! So that post was like a reply to that quote, and that you don't believe it!

I think you should both take a deep breath and count to ten.
The answer to Lenny's is as follows
No VCR will have an S-video output unless it is an S-VHS machine. The reason is that an S-video connection will offer no improvement in quality over a composite one. This is because of the way that standard VCRs convolve the color signal on the tape itself.
Imagine you took a composite signal from your DVD player and then converted it to componant or S-video. The lost detail, pixel crawl and color bleading won't be fixed by upgrading the signal type. The damage is already done.
Having said that, a good composite signal can look fairly good. You might try buying expensive interconnects from best buy and seeing if it improoves the picture.

Yeah, you just don't get it, we have a "special" relationship
Thanks for the info though, didn't think of it that way.
Maybe I should get one of those ridiculously expensive Monster cables for 200 bucks :D
