I want to get shot of them since signing up another domain with diyhost and seeing the vastly superior service... but Easypace want £50+VAT to let my domain go! I know such charges usually exist but this is fairly high, no?

Anyway, I've started to consider letting the domain expire and buying it again straight away. Do many companies have a policy of buying ones their customers had, to sell back just in case? Or do pesky little bots do the same? In short, is it worth the risk?

The more I think about it, the more I reckon not... but fifty quid?! :(

is it a .com or .co.uk? As you might be able to just transfer it away anyway, whether easyspace like it or not, depending on which top level registrar it is. If it's .co.uk you can definitely just fax nominet and tell them to change the tag to your new registrar. If it is .com it can be trickier.

.com :(

Still, I'd be really interested if something like that could be the case. I don't mind jumping through hoops - it's the principle of the thing!

companies do put an "admin" charge on transferring domains - usually its approx £25 though - £50 does seem steep..

Freenetname used to charge £75, now it has gone down to £25. It may be worth complaining to the domain registrar as I think they will reduce it if enough people complain. The registrar for Freenetname is Nominet. I just signed up with E7even who is also with Nominet & they have no charge to transfer a domain so it is Easyspace who are levying the unfair fee.

ICANN changed the policy for transferring domains so the owner has more control of the domain now (although it also sounds less secure).

http://www.icann.org/transfers/policy-12jul04.htm
In the event that a Transfer Contact listed in the Whois has not confirmed their request to transfer with the Registrar of Record and the Registrar of Record has not explicitly denied the transfer request, the default action will be that the Registrar of Record must allow the transfer to proceed.
I guess it depends who the contact for the domain is and if they will deny the transfer in which case there's not much that can be done but pay them. Letting it expire will be a gamble.
