Thats a contract/pay monthly phone though, and one of those annoying deals where you have to claim the money back.
started getting these as or company mobiles, cracking phones - runs windows mobile 2003, comes with outlook 2002 for synching, basically a PDA minus some power and touch senseitive screen. sing MSN Messenger is rather nice and IE for browsing is cool. You can also reformat movies and install them onto mini SD cards for when youre bored (ditto mp3s, games etc)
Very tempted to pick one of these up if they can be used on o2 for free wap etc
I have one and it is fantastic, I would recommend it to anyone.

Just to say this phone is now available in Orange stores for £149.99 removing the need to pay postage on the site posted above.
Also, you can get £10 for trading in any old phone as long as it turns on (you dont even need the charger or any of that) making it £139.99.
But I wouldn't have realised it was this price if it wasnt for the OP, so cheers!

Hmm...dont suppose any one been to Trafford Center Orange shop ? Think I'll get one of these today.
I went into my Orange store to buy one of these but the sales person told me that my current Orange contract SIM would not work with the PAYG phone as it uses an upgraded SIM and I wouldn't be able to use any of the advanced features of the SPV C500.
Was she talking rubbish ? or will I, in fact, not be able to use my Orange contract SIM in it ?
Thanks,
Kevin.

Orange seem to try anything to make you register the phone instore, even though after contacting Orange Ive found out they shouldn't do this for the christmas period - the only reason they'd want to do it now is so the salesperson gets their commision. (They told me all sorts of lies when I was in store :nono: )
It's true that if your current phone is pretty old, it might not have things like gprs enabled on your account, and might hold less phone numbers in the sim, but it's probably also likely that the salesperson was lying to get their commision.
I gave up in the end and just let them register in store. Doesn't make much difference, I told them I was upgrading so kept my old number. Meant I lost my 5 free text messages a month though (which they kindly refrained from telling me would happen).
Don't forget your mens/womens travel toiletries pack which they give you for some reason! (unless I just smelt bad  )

What exactly does registering do ? Is there any reason why I should or should not do it ? Also, my curent phone is a Nokia 3510i which I got from Orange as part of the 12 month contract 5 months ago, so it is reasonably new.
I take it, there is no reson I can't simply walk into my Orange store and buy the PAYG C500, give them the £149.99 and walk away without giving them any details whatsoever ?
Cheers,
Kevin.

That's exactly what I wanted to do but they wouldn't let me. I told them that you were allowed to walk into currys or any other similar store and they'd let you simply take it without registering it and asked why it should be different for the orange store, but they still wouldn't let me.
After emailing orange, I've been told they SHOULD have let me do this over the christmas period if I told them it was a present (which I did). It was simply the store assistant wanting their commission that stopped me from doing so.
I guess it must depend on the store what they'll let you do, but from orange direct, they say they SHOULD let you. You might need to argue though.

Picked the last one up from Trafford Center today after being told that they dont sell that model on PAYG, only contract . The 'Orange Trainee' took half an hour to process it :?: No way would they let me buy it until I had registered in store. Why do they need to know if I'm married?
How difficult is it to buy a PAYG mobile these days :brickwall
Anyway looks ok (only sell the black version, even though they advertise the silver one !!)
Got one of these today, it's a very nice phone. :D

Ebuyer are selling 256mb minisd cards that go in this phone for about £21 now with free delivery too. Made by kingmax with a 5 year warrenty, and comes with an adaptor so it also fits standard sd card slots if you want it to.
Or 7dayshop have them for £17.99, works out about £20 with postage, but doesnt say what make or whether it comes with an adaptor.
I now have space for nearly 4000 640x480 photos on my c500 :D
Edit: Wait, no they're not! Ignore that. Maybe they'll be back in the future?

Whoops, looks like they've stopped selling them. They were selling them a few days ago, mine arrived today. The customer reviews were full of people buying them for this phone - didnt think to post it here until today.
7DayShop (http://www.awin1.com/awclick.php?mid=530&gid=6083&id=30372) also now say "On order" :suspect: Ignore my post then, things change a lot in a few days!

Can anyone find me which part of Orange T&C and possibly consumer act/trading standard guildelines can be presented to any Orange (or other mobile network) sales person/assistant to show that making registration mandatory is completely illegal and if they don't sell you the phone they are breaking the law?

Zub, sounds like your phone is faulty, ring orange and it will get fixed under orange care.
Mine is a cracking phone, and only needed rebooting 2-3 times since December.

Why not go for the contract deal at Talkworldonline online (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump.php?url=http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/click^QS^p=1562^QA^a=60823^QA^g=19547) ? The C500 will only set you back £29.99 and you get lots of inclusive minutes?

Whats your problem doing that ?
Its to protect the consumer I think, by logging the IMEI number etc.
Also to do with crime and anti terror.

Has anyone who bought one of these phones noticed that the paint on the joystick thing has already started to peel off? Or is it just mine ?

Why would you pay £150 for this phone, when you have deals on contract which give you lots of free minutes and the phone for free?

06-02-2005, 09:39
Yeah the one I tried in the Orange shop had the paint worn off, it looks like it's made from different stuff to the keys and painted.
Not worn on mine yet but only a matter of time methinks.
No way would they let me buy it until I had registered in store. Why do they need to know if I'm married?
There is absolutely no necessity for Orange to know anything about the purchaser, except they will now use that info for marketing purposes. If 'forced', you can register using the shops address. They don't like this at all.

There aren't any.

i've had the same problem. it's just started peeling off from the two ends of the joystick... i think it's only a matter of time before the whole thing peels off. :(

Actually as far as I am aware they can attach whatever conditions they want to to the purchase of the phone. There is no law that says they MUST sell the phone to you, everything they're advertising is basically an invitiation to you to buy but they are well within the law to refuse a sale for any reason, after all you don't have to buy it from them - someone correct me if this is wrong.
Edit: Forgot to point out that I don't agree with them demanding that you must register and I wouldn't personally buy from them if they demanded that.
I know it's possible to create movies on a pc and convert them using PocketDivXEncoder and then transfer the file to a mini SD card.
Question is, will the phone play the movie or do I have to install something else on to the phone ?
What is beta player and do I need to install this on to the C500 ?
can this phone be used with a bluetooth gps receiver and tom tom?

BetaPlayer is a free piece of software for the Smartphone that lets you play DIVX movies that have been encoded by PocketDivXEncoder. Or indeed any other encoder that writes Divx files.
can this phone be used with a bluetooth gps receiver and tom tom?
The version that works on this phone is called "TomTom Mobile" and it's great. You can even get additional Points of Interest so that TomTom Mobile will warn you when you're getting near a speed camera.
The package includes the software, chargers and a bluetooth gps receiver and costs about £170.
thanks. Can it give you directions based on a full postcode?
Also where do you download the list of POI for speed camera's?

As to postcodes yes but not the full postcode only 5 digits of a postcode which is more than enough to guide you from door to door.

BetaPlayer is amazing, it's far better than the pretty crap Windows Media Player that comes with the phone. The official link:
http://betaplayer.corecodec.org/
You need an OTA unlocked phone though:
http://developer.orangews.com/orgspv/comdef.aspx
Don't worry this is an official page but it's a pig to find at www.developers.orange.co.uk , with your phone application unlocked you can install any software you like.

It's a very good price. That won't be beaten because:
EDIT: Available for £149.99 from the Orange shop.
They're now £139 from an Orange shop but good luck actually getting one. I went into my local one 4 times over 4 weeks and every week they didn't have one in. I gave up in the end and bought it from Modaco for £7 more than Mobile Dealer. The plus side is I'm helping Modaco out who through their wicked SmartPhone forum has helped me out loads of times.
Anyone know if these can be unlocked? Would I be able to use it with my exsising o2 sim?

Thanks for the info but what exactly is OTA unlocking and once it's done, how is Betaplayer installed on to the phone ?
bradavon
15-02-2005, 19:01
I've no idea what OTA means so I usually call it application unlocking. Basically when you buy a SmartPhone (note: not just the best of the bunch SPV C500) it's locked so you can only install software which has been certified by Microsoft.
Clearly this costs money so a lot of software vendors don't bother, especially the smaller ones. If your phone is application unlocked you can also move shortcuts around on your start menu (i.e - the ones that come as default on the phone), using my computer. You can move shortcuts that didn't come on the phone anyway but the pre-installed ones such as "ActiveSync" or the "Orange" folder you can't. Seeing as I never use the "ActiveSync" shortcut on the phone directly I've moved it out of the way to my "Accessories" folder.
Thankfully Orange let you do this for free as developers need to test their software to make sure it works properly on these phones. Note once installed it there forever unless you hard reset the phone (which you may need to do if it dies on you) or you run an upgrade from Orange.
SIM unlocking a phone is there for life!
I suggest everyone checks out:
www.coolsmartphone.com
www.modaco.com
The latter is a forum much like this one but for SmartPhones and has helped me out many a time.
p.s - Once you have ActiveSync installed, download the BetaPlayer .exe and run it from My Computer/Explorer. It will do the rest for you and appear on your phone's start menu.

Sorry I didn't realise. Orange don't mind btw or at least I don't believe they do I've mentioned it to their customer services before and they didn't seem to mind.
It also says on the website:
"Please verify that it is legal to unlock your phone in your own country! this is a UK based company and provides a legal service for UK mobile phone users."
But noted anyway.
p.s - The application unlock is freely available on Orange's "official" website.
