Being a big fan of the Coen Brothers, I buy O Brother as soon as it comes out - even though the dvd's very light on extras.

It's what - a couple of MONTHS later - and they bring out a Special Edition with extra features. Am I the only one who is sickened at the way the studios are so blatently exploiting the buying public ???

Come now. I'm sure most of us here have grown used to this ploy by studios. Thus, we are educated enough to make an assumption as to whether a release will be the 'only' release.

SE's don't bother me too much personally, I don't always find the time to watch extras and sometimes the 'extras' are of poor quality as to be worthless.

I will, however, be replacing my copy of O Brother Where Art Thou since it is one of my favourite films. And an insight into the making of such a masterpiece is very welcome.

I won't be replacing superceded discs such as the Matrix, The Mummy etc.

And I haven't replaced my Star Trek videos for the opposite reason that I DO want behind-the-scenes info and lots of extras for these films and was not convinced that the first lot of Paramount releases would be the 'only' or 'final' releases.

To avoid disappointment one basically has to put a little more consideration into one's purchases with regard to this issue.

Blame Momentum - bunch of gits. I for one will not be buying anymore of their stuff.

Yeah i think this stinks too. As long as they don't start doing this as frequently as they do with CDs. What really gets on my goat is when you wait ages for an album to come out and two months down the line they rerelease it with a bonus disc.

Gizmo, you’re missing the point in regard to this particular title. Two region 2 DVDs within the space of seven months from the same company is nothing short of profiteering. Couple of years apart - fine, but they must have had this scheduled at the time they released the first inferior version and then made a point of not giving punters a choice.

Even Di$ney don’t pull this crap anymore.

Normally I'd agree with you, but when you sit down & look at this package, you'll see that this new SE isn't really worth upgrading to. The extras add up to about 1hr? how many of us are going to watch them more than once? If the rental shops get it in, I'd rent it, but I'm not even remotely tempted to buy it.

The fact that it still isn't in DTS should be enough of a reason to go R1.

Shingster, it’s not a question of upgrading. It’s about being upfront with your customers and gving them a choice: Basic version for £17 say, and the Sp Ed at £20 - but both released or advertised at the same time.

Bear in mind this is the same company that screwed up the transfer on Angel Heart and botched the burnt in Russian on Red Heat. Neither of these previous foul ups have resulted in any recompense for the people affected - Us. Enough is enough I say.

Although I bought the normal version, I also upgraded to the special edition and got the live dvd with it in virgins 2 for £22 offer, anyway, dispite being in sealed boxes, the o brother pack was empty when I opened it at home!!!!!!!!!!!

I too have stuck with my WS VHS copies (in a nice metallic blue box - better than most DVD boxset packaging ;)).

And getting back to the topic, it was interesting to hear that Paramount have decided not to release a 'bare bones' theatrical edition of Star Trek:TMP a month or so before releasing the SE Director's Cut after all - perhaps they felt that this would be taking the *****....
