I saw this the other night.

At the start, you see Sauron wearing "the ring"...

This wouldn't be the one where at the end the armour falls down the well and awakens the goblins is it? If so this has been available to download from the official site for months.

AvidFan: I saw it at the cinema

Alonok: Yes

My point was (let me put it this way):

At the start, you see Sauron wearing "the ring"...

Oh yeah.

But hang on - If I remember rightly from the books (which I may/ may not) there are nine rings, spread out to the different races - and they don't make people invisible, only 'the one ring' does. Don't hold me to this, I can't remember too well

Three rings for the Elven-Kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-Lords in their halls of Stone,
Nine For Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the dark lord on his dark throne
In the land of mordor where the shadows lie
One ring to rule the all, One ring to find them,
One ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the land of Mordor where the shadows lie

Yeh, I thought of that and I suppose you could claim that's the "answer", but isn't the voice-over going on about the "one ring" as you see that shot?

The One ring does a alot more then make people invisible (but I think you knew that :) ). It only makes mortals invisible, because it moves you to the spiritual plane, (for want of a better word). Remember how the appearance of the black riders changed to Frodo when he put it on? Thats because the black riders largely exist on this plane as opposed to ours, so he saw their "true" appearance. However, elves(remember how Glorfindal appeared when he put it on at the Fords?), Maiars(sp?)(Thats Sauron, Gandalf, Saruman, and according to some theorys, Tom Bombadi (Oh, and Istari are Maiar, before anyone complains ;) )) etc. already exist on that plane and ours at the same time, so it doesn't make them invisible.

Mmmm...possibly. But I seem to remember them making a big thing about it affecting Tom Bombadil *only*.

I also don't remember anything that specifically says it only makes mortals invisible.

Come to think of it, are not elves, Gandalf (et al) and Sauron also mortal?

>> Gandalf (et al) and Sauron also mortal? <<

Not quite. If you fancy knowing more, delve into The Silmarillion. Gandalf is a lot more than a mere mortal. So is Sauron.

>> Tolkien's Elves are'nt mortal either <<

True. They just take a ship and travel "West" at some point.

Re. Silmarillion: I have read it (some years ago though) but thought that Gandalf etc were still "mortal".

As for the "head West" bit, I've always interpreted that to mean that the elves (and ring bearers) go there to die. Ergo are mortal.

Anyway, this thread is in danger of attracting Tolkien anoraks who will start quoting precise sections from "Middle Earth" books, so perhapsit should end here...

Sauron wearing the Ring could also be a flashback - when Gandalf tells the story of how the Ring was taken from Sauron. That would be the only time we actually see Sauron anyway.
Unless they changed that bit - which I hope they didn't. I always liked the fact that we never actually see Sauron in the books.
"In the meanwhile at Mount Doom ..." segments would really hurt the story.
