Looking into getting a Panasonic DVD-RAM recorder which also
uses write once DVD-R (as the Philips will after an upcoming mod).
Obviously the write once blanks are cheaper but there seems to be 2 different kinds - "general purpose" and "authoring". The
former being cheaper and, from my understanding only for use in
PC DVD-R drives. Similar to the situation with the cheaper CD-R's
not being compatible for hi-fi separates recorders.
Am I right in believing that the Panasonic/Philips will only be able to use the more expensive "authoring" version of blank.
Thanks in advance for any help.

No, the panasonic (as with the Pioneer DVR7000 and sony clone, and Pioneer DVDRA03) will only read and write the cheaper "general purpose" (or "data" depending on the brand!) discs. No current home DVDR deck regardless of format will read or write to authoring discs.
