Hi - I'm looking to get my first DD/DTS amp and speakers. I don't want to spend too much. Anyone got any recommendations?
Thanks

How much are you thinking of spending? Good half decent pack is yamahas RXV420RDS & NSP220 pack, about £400 or less.

I have the Yamaha kit listed above and it does sound very good I have however introduced my old Tannoy speakers as the front pair to give additional mid-range to the sound.
The kit is available if selectively bought at different internet sites for about £350, which is a little cheaper.
Yamaha VS10 for £299 from leconcepts (www.leconcepts.com). See my pic in the sticky thread at the top, page 3. Along the same vein as the digitheartre but I reckon much better in performance and looks.

It comes with 5 effect speakers and an active sub (speaker pack is NSP220). Its listed on our site. Theres also a slightly larger yamaha pack, the NSP320, which has larger front speakers and a nice large centre, worth spending the extra £30 to be honest.

Be wary when buying "cheaper" yamaha kit, its usually euro imports, meaning its "only" got a years warranty with the dealer that sold you it, rather then the UK yamaha 2 year ring-yamaha-if-its-broke warranty :) Also some sites have the receivers wrote up wrong, where you got a RXV396rds and NSP220 instead of a RXV420RDS & NSP220 - just check before you order to make sure:)

I've just bought the Kenwood 5050D from www.richersounds.co.uk. They have it in shops at £180 but if you mention you saw it in what hi fi? you can have it for £150.
I can say I'm more than impressed with it, after replacing my good (but old) pioneer stack system.
I would recommend this amp very highly, especially at the price.

Puynisher the Kenwood 5050D sounds a good price. Does it handle both DD and DTS?
Cheers

Yeah, and it rocks on both accounts.

nice!
Another option if you are looking for mega cheapness exists at www.qed-uk.com - Eltax Stargate pack (5 satellite speakers and an active subwoofer) for £109 delivered. Supposed to be very good for the cash
I personally went for the Eltax Silverados at the same site for the same price - I already had a subwoofer and went for these boys instead - excellent they are too!

I would personnally go for the mission package from www.richersounds.co.uk.
Fronts Mission 701's £70 a pair
Rears Mission 700's £50 a pair
Centre Mission 70c1 £50
Will rock and give a nice level of base.

wow! VERY interested in the Kenwood 5050 from the Richer Soudns site, it looks good and says it covers DD, DTS and THX and has 5x100w output.
justin, i know you don't stock this but is this a good amp to get? and will any decent speakers like the Missions be good for this?
Thanks.

The THX bit is a misprint - my mate owns this amp and it certainly don't have THX on it (no amp should at that price!)

Hardly any dealers stock Kenwood anymore, as the last few years their gear has not been as good as it used to be (I had a Kenwood receiver 10 years ago, which was the bees knees, the 7010 - shows how long ago it was as the model numbers have been round again!), plus richers now have the main distribution to it.
It all depends on what you are comparing it against, and your budget. if you really cannot afford to go to about £260ish for a Marantz SR4200 then yes, its a good amp. But is most certainly is NOT THX spec! Cheapest amp with this is Pioneers VSX859RDS!!!
Missions will be fine on the Kenwood, thats quict a good tonal match.
Hope that helps.

Please stop.
I've only had me Kenwood 5050 3 days, and i'm already looking at the Marantz and Pioneers, gits.
Is the Marantz a lot better sounding then, cause my Kenwood sounds damn good at the moment.
How good is THX compared to say DTS then?

THX isn't a sound format as such, it's a set of standards which AV equipment must meet. There are two standards, Ultra (the full blown THX) and Select (for lower end eqpt (still not really budget stuff though)).
Of course, the manufacturer has to pay Lucasfilm/THX for the rights to use the logo once the kit has met the standard - the costs aren't published, but they are rumoured to be steep, which may go some way to explaining why relatively few makers bother with it.
Is it worth it? That depends - in many cases THX stamped kit is outperformed by similarly priced non-THX kit. The standards are a set of technical specs - they don't include sound quality (as it's a subjective thing and can't be measured). That said though, most makers will put some effort into making the kit sound good too!
At the end of the day, sound quality is a matter of opinion.
THX is no guarantee that a product will sound good - but there's a more than fair chance that it will.

You've only got to see the R1 'THX approved' DVD version of Highlander to see what a load of b0ll0cks the THX standard really is. It's money for old rope for Luca$ I really doubt he gives two farts.

ok, i've decided coz i'm pretty skint i'll go for the Kenwood, it got 3 out of 5 in What Hi-fi and 5 stars in Home Cinema mag and i ain't really bothered about paying extra for THX.
Gone for a silver one.
All i need is some speakers, preferably small ones, justin or anyone, how are them eltax Stargate ones to go with it, my budget is about £120 for speakers now!!! Thanks for any help!!
