View Full Version : [PS2] Metal Gear Solid 3
just noticed IGN have the review up.
Overall, this is the best Metal Gear Solid game that we've seen and, yes, it rules.
9.6
looks like another title to add on the xmas list :D

Gamefaqs list March 2005
So pleased I have a US PS2.
Watched the vid review of this, looks top.
Cant believe this is 'out' but not out here till March!!
Let's hope if we have to wait until March we get some additional European content/modes to compensate for the wait. I think GT4 is also released in the United States this year and we'll probably have to wait until 2005. I'm not that disappointed though, because there's plenty of other games around and others to be released.
Think I will have to import this, but there are so many good games to play at the moment I may wait until March '05.
Got the US NTSC release on it's way to me via a colleague at work.
from what I've played it's really good, takes about 20 minutes to get the game started after a classy intro and lots of talking, graphics are very nice for a PS2 title. I've never played a Metal Gear Game before but this has made me go and play the other two whilst waiting for the PAL release.
Anybody know if theres any differences in the game depending on what question you pick at the start:
Im playing the MGS series for the first time
I Like MGS1
I Like MGS2
whats the difference if any?

yeah i've had this bad boy for about 2 weeks now and am lovin every minute of it, by far the best metal gear game created, with all the other swwet ass games out at the moment, prince of persia bein one of em i haven't been able to play metal gear that much, i think i'm about halfway through it though.

I just presumed it would give you a tutorial on how to play or an update on the 'story so far' depending on what you picked.

Loved the first MGS - but Sons of Liberty annoyed the hell out me. Good game and all, but I want to actually, you know, play the game. Not listen to the characters moralising for half an hour at a time! Very frustrating. I am sure this game will be great, but I am not that desperate for it - especially as I have tons more to explore on GTA yet.
I am impatient, so that is probably why I prefer games like GTA, I can just go grab a Tec-9 and rampage when I feel like it.

got some bad news for ya mate, if u hated the long talking movie sequences then you may hate mgs 3, so far most of the game i've played theres like a 20 odd minute movie sequence every 10 mins of gameplay, but you do get to skip them so its not all that bad.
I couldn't get on with the first MGS cos of all the cut scenes. I don't think I'll be bothering with this one.
its a good game, but i h8 not having a proper radar like the first two games

Each to their own as it always is, personally the cut-scenes make up half the game for me, and i can't wait to see them in mgs3. Cut-scenes aside though, i'm interested in how the game will play without the radar, i read somewhere that it may potentially slow the game down to a crawl in some areas if you need to evade the enemy but can't judge their line of sight like you could in the previous games.
Still, reguardless it should offer up some cool action once again
Time to resurrect this thread seeing as its out (PAL) on Friday.
Had a quick go on the demo and my juices are suitably flowing for some new Snake action (missus!)
Been hearing that even MGS haters have been enjoying it as the codec and cut-scenes are cut right down in the second half of the game.

i hear it has extra features to the usa version-anyone confirm that?
Exclusive content for the PAL version includes:
-Duel Mode - Battle through the game's Boss Fights independently
-Demo Theatre - Watch all the cut scenes in sequence
-European Extreme difficulty level
-2 New Levels in Snake Vs Monkey Mode
-New Face Paint and Camoflage Designs not available in US or Japanese versions
i hear it has extra features to the usa version-anyone confirm that?
It sure does.
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater – PAL additions confirmed
European versions of Hideo Kojima's classic series enhanced with addition of four key new features
Konami of Europe has confirmed the full roster of gameplay additions to the forthcoming PAL versions of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. In total, European gamers will enjoy four new elements, unseen in the existing Japanese and US versions of the game.
Scheduled for release on PlayStation 2 on March 4th, 2005, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is already one of the most anticipated games of the year. Set in the 1964, the game is centered in the escalating Cold War, with central hero Snake armed with weapons of the era and charged with recovering a defecting scientist. To this end, series creator and Director Hideo Kojima has moved away from the urban environments of the game's predecessors and has created a lush jungle setting.
In addition to the new environments, Kojima has packed the game with a wealth of new gameplay features. The 'Camouflage Index' lets players change Snake's costume and face paint to match the surrounding area and help evade discovery, while a stunning CQC (Close Quarters Combat) system empowers him with a range of new, offensive moves. This new system facilitates the most advanced hand-to-hand combat techniques in the series to date, with Snake using guards as shields, throwing them or simply rendering them unconscious.
In readiness for the PAL version's March release, Kojima has again added a number of new ideas to the European versions of the game. As with Director's enhanced PAL version of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, European gamers will get more Snake for their money than their US and Japanese counterparts in the form of four key new features.
As previously announced, PAL versions of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater will feature a new 'DUEL MODE' which allows players to battle through the game's 'Boss Fights' independently, and details the rich variety of adversaries Snake faces during the course of the game. A 'DEMO THEATRE' has also been created, and can be used to play the game's stunning link sequences in order to enjoy the many dramatic plot twists in order.
European gamers will also enjoy a new 'European Extreme' difficulty level, which is designed for hardened veterans of Snake's jungle environment, while there are two new levels in the light-hearted 'Snake Vs Monkey' mode, wherein the Metal Gear Solid hero finds himself chasing and trying to catch errant monkeys! The PAL version will also feature many face paint designs not seen in the existing versions of the game, while the winning designs from Konami's global camouflage creation competition will also be included.
That's great news. The extra features follow a very similar format to those of Metal Gear Solid 2 - European Extreme difficulty, Boss battle mode and the MGS3 version of the replay theatre or whatever it was called.
Question to anyone who has played the game: Are the little extra gameplay features from Metal Gear Solid 2 still there - such as holding guards up and stealing their dog tags; the ability to move the camera during cutscenes and communications. If you find any hidden content or features like in MGS2 when you focused on one of the posters of the models and then called Otacon... please post in spoiler tags.

Mine hasn't arrived yet but I do know that there was a similar competition on the Konami website a year or so ago to have your name included on the dogtags in the game so I'm guessing thats still in there. I have also read that the cutscene interaction is even greater with things like being able to jump to first person view and stuff
On a related note, MGS is the ONLY game series I would consider buying the guide book for. Not to cheat but MGS is so full of easter eggs and secrets that you will simply never find them all. I picked up the Piggyback Official Guide as I began my second round of MGS2 and it enhanced the game loads. They are beautifully produced books as well. Take a look (http://www.authorisedcollection.com/en/guides/info/?id_guide=27)

I didn't get on very well with the last one on PS2. I don't know why, just found it SOOO hard!!!!
Perhaps I'll put that behind me and get this anyway.
Just had my shipping notice from Simply, cant wait to play this one :) I loved the 1st one soo much one of my favourite games ever.
I've finished the us version of this game, and I have to say it is very good indeed, athough if you thought the 2nd one was hard, you are going to struggle with this one due to there being no radar (Although I thought this made the game a bit more realistic)
I will have to play through this again, as I don't feel I have even scratched the surface with this game.
Thanks Jimbo and Bleeders. With regard to Bleedcers spoiler I've read that:
MGS3 takes place in the 1960s and If you try to kill one of the characters from a later (present day) MGS game you'll get a call telling you that it would cause a temporal paradox.
Not having a radar will make the game more difficult but I suspect the whole jungle setting will as well. But I've noticed on a couple of the videos on PSM2s cover disc that:
At some point you get a sonar that detects movement and infra-red goggles. So those two will be very useful.
The Ape Escape mini game looks like fun.
Bleeders

JohnMac - Yes, the sonor/motion detector can be useful, although bear in mind it will pick up everything - including the jungle habitants, so differentiating between guards and animals can be awkward. You will use the first-person perspective a lot to see what's actually in-front of you.
Yes, if you kill one of the characters that re-emerges in the series, the game ends with the message "Time Paradox".
Yes, if you kill one of the characters that re-emerges in the series, the game ends with the message "Time Paradox".
That sounds so stupid it's untrue...
what happens if you don't know who appears in earlier games ? If I kill someone and the game ends with that message then I'll give the disc a 'travelling through air to the bin paradox'
Right quick question, is there as much in-game movie footage than MGS2? Cause although i love the games, the last one i got really frustrated with spending most of my time watching movies which look very nice but i just wonna play the game :)
Cheers

It only occurs with one character and there's only really one part where you can kill him, other than that, you don't get the opportunity to waste him.
As for movie sequences, there a good few, but codec sequences are kept to a minimum (aside from the beginning of the game, where one sequence is long-ish).

I quite like the movie scenes, it makes you feel like your actually there at times, especially the first metal gear.

Well, as MGS3 wings ints way to me we get the following news. Not exactly surprising given its popularity but great news non the less
From GamesRadar
Is it game over for Snake? MGS4 to hit next-gen consoles with mystery characters and storyline
Work is already underway on Metal Gear Solid 4, which will be released for as-yet-unspecified next-generation consoles, Konami have just revealed at a press event at Berlin's Hotel Adlon.
However, Konami have not announced details of any characters, storyline or even a release date, although we have heard that it will be set in an entirely new location that hasn't been seen in previous MGSs. (A huge metropolis? Outer space?) As for formats, it's almost certainly going to debut on PS3 and we'd also expect there to be an Xbox 2 version at some point.
About the only thing that was revealed was the tagline, "No place to hide! No place for Hideo!" This is a reference to that fact that Metal Gear mastermind Hideo Kojima is finally moving on from his role as the series' producer - presumably on to other next-gen projects - to a new position of executive producer.
Taking his place as MGS4 overlord will be Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo veteran Kenichiro Imaizumi, marking the fact that the game will form part of an entirely new trilogy - so don't necessarily expect previous Metal Gear characters to be making an appearance.
That said, the character designer and art director will still be Yoji Shinkawa - who has worked on all previous Metal Gear Solids - so expect the series to retain its instantly recognisable aesthetic style.
We don't imagine we'll see anything of the game though until May's E3 show, where it's anticipated that a trailer for the next-gen stealth-'em-up will be debuted as part of Sony's annual E3 conference.
In the meantime, we're off to a launch party tonight for Metal Gear Solid 3 at The Teufelsberg in Berlin - formerly a secret service listening post - where we'll be snooping for any additional MGS4 gossip. As soon as we hear any, we'll let you know.
Got my copy today - what are the 'net features' reffered to on the cover?

I have not played MGS before (normal game)
I preferred MGS1 (your stamina decreases slower in game)
I preferred MGS2 (extra scene in the intro movie)
I just didn't want to miss anything out like in MGS2 where your answer to the same type of question missed a chunk of the game out.

I remember reading at some stage that it would get ported to the xbox, but id imagine that if this did happen, it would be at least a year away from release.
as far as i am aware konami have made no official anouncement regarding an xbox release.
If I remember correctly, Metal Gear Solid Substance was originally supposed to be a brand new Metal Gear game and Xbox exclusive, but it ended up being a MGS2 directors cut and got released on all formats. I'd imagine that if MGS3 was going to be released on Xbox, It would be as some sort of directors cut like Substance was, I hope they spend more time on MGS3, cos Substance was a rubbish port, that looked worse in many areas than the PS2 version.

Really looking forward to getting this tomorrow. I read that there are less movie scenes in the middle portion of the game allowing gamers to play for a long stretch. Shame i thought, because i LOVE the MGS cutscenes. Twin Snakes on the GC and Sons Of Liberty on the PS2 were beautiful. Gameplay graphics were also gorgeous. I suppose the MGS games are love or hate stealth games that due to the cutscenes can really test a gamer's patience. But i liked the fact that the previous games were like watching a CGI movie, listening to a lot of backstory and then maybe playing a bit before the next movie kicked in. :D
Anyway, i'm sure i'll love MGS 3. It's one reason why i went for a PS2 early last year.
I had mine delivered from gameplay this morning. All day been at work twiddling my thumbs and thinking of ways to hold up them guards - huh, who's there :?: .....
Can't wait to try the ape escape thingy
If you didn't like Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty because of the cutscenes I would still highly recommend buying MGS2: Substance on PS2. The 500 VR missions would take you far longer to complete than the game and there's always the high score to aim for on each one - it's really addictive and it's also well structured by character and type of training. Plus, if you are starting the full game it is less confusing in Substance because instead of the questions you just get the options: Tanker, Plant, Tanker-Plant.
I should get my copy of MGS3 tomorrow from Amazon.

My copy was posted from Play on Tues, received Thurs...I seem to get most of my stuff within 2-3 days so that is no surprise.
So far the game is excellent, but I restarted because it's Metal Gear Solid, but the techniques needed are completely different. Unless you use the "d-pad" to "stalk", they pretty much hear you everytime and alert. "stalking" only goes as fast as the guard , but if you are quick you can still take them down before they have a chance to do anything after spotting you.
However, you can have 90% camo and they can pretty much walk over you without seeing you.
Death Pill and Revive pill are funny. hunting for food is cool too, certain herbs have medicinal properties. You can throw live snakes at guards and they scare, allowing you some time to make a move, shoot bees' nests and they fall, allowing you to take honey, or watch the angry hive swarm a gaurd.
You can change the machine gun between single, semi and full auto..kick barrells into gaurds and steam roll them, so much fun...but the best thing is...
****************************
SLIGHT SPOILERS - no plot stuff tho

The game mechanics are incredible, I havent quite got the hang of CQC, yet..I tend to just "Mash" people instead of using finesse...Once you press circle toward someone you can
a) throw to ground then hold up on floor
b) choke
c) human shield
d) throat slit
e) ask for information
f) hand to hand then leg sweep
I tend to either throw them over or hand to hand, managed a throat slit once, by accident actually. Blood and Mud stays on your camo while you are in a certain area or unless you change it.
You dont actually recover health, it recovers on a rate based on your stamina and injuries...If you get shot, you need to use a knife to dig the bullet out, a serum to stop bleeding, dissinfectant to stop infection than a bandage. I've heard if you just cover up injuries without treating them properly you can get ill through infection.
Stamina is recovered through saving and turning the game off if you are desperate (no danger of this at first though) or eating fruits, plants, animals or your ration. Snake will chomp on things like Magpies and Frogs then tell you what he thought of them...he seems to like Snakes and a certain fruit...not so keen on rats, magpies and mushrooms.
It can seem fiddly at times, the people who complained about stupidly high amounts of cutscenes probably arent playing the game properly, they are probably just running around shirtless like Rambo shooting things. If you use the camo and tactics properly, the game gets stretched out, because "leaf" camo works better hiding in grass..."woodland" is all purpose, "tree bark" is good when flattened in a tree. Each situation requires adapting to surroundings to get the drop on the enemies and conceal yourself should they suspect anything.
despite what the mission says, im sure you can just run around blowing people away though, but for once, thanks to camo...hiding and sneaking is tactical, rather than just throwing on a box.
Mine arrived fine today from PLAY. Opening movie is great, just getting a hang of all this camoflage malarky!......
My copy didn't arrive today, I think the postman's probably playing it tonight. ;) Sounds like an excellent game, any more first impressions? This is one game I don't intend to rush through. :)

I got to that bit, got ****** off and restarted...I didnt read the manual or anything, just relied on the tried and tested MGS staples...didnt work. then after i got a feel for the game, it was much easier.
my method
That bit was annoying, but I managed to take out the first two gaurds easy peasy. waited in the grass at the start of the compound and took them out with the tranq gun. One of them doesnt even have a radio, so no backup. Approached the compound from the West, applied the bricks camo and hid where the shotgun was. You can be a lot closer to gaurds than you think and not be detected. Popped out when he turned around and capped his ass. Went around the corner to the grassy bit. Waited for the gaurd to be level with me and turn...jumped out and pushed barrell with /\ to knock him over. There are some crates of different size by a gap in the wall, get on the small crate and look through gap, you can take out the next gaurd. That should be enough to get to Solokov. Also, I noticed there is a trap door under his bed....can you get that open?

:)
Can you drag and hide enemies once put to sleep or killed? How long are they asleep for?
:)
If it is the same as Metal Gear Solid 2 then you can drag them. Also try dropping them suddenly to see if they have any ammo. You should be able to tell how long they will be asleep for judging by the freqency of "z"s that appear over their heads. If they are deep asleep you'll see two or three. They gradually decrease as the enemy starts to wake up. If you stand a few paces behind an enemy's head (assuming they are on their back), when they wake up you'll be able to walk up behind them and hold them up to get their dog tags. If they are just stunned they will have three stars circling around their head but these will disappear more rapidly.
Mine arrived - yay etc. Came recorded from Play, they haven't done that in years..
Anyway, all round loving it so far. Did anybody choose 'I Like MGS2' at the opening screen?

The scenes with Ocelot are priceless, the first one was class because Snake is such a know it all, and the second had yet ANOTHER wink to James Bond with Snake knowing Ocelot couldnt kill him because he counted the gun shots, saw he had a 6 shooter and worked out he was empty before Ocelot realised he was...just confronted Ocelot for a third time, that's pretty funny too.

well, i've been playing and i've mixed feelings on the game.
What i find frustrating and completely annoying is Snake's lie down position and his "get up". You need to press the X button TWICE to get Snake standing from a prone position and more often than not i've forgotten to do this, been discovered as i'm laying still in the grass, press X only ONCE, snake sits in crouch position and then moving the left stick so i can get out of there leaves me nowhere because he lies back down instead of RUNNING AWAY from the enemy. ARGHHHHHH. :brickwall :oh-hum: The amount of times i've done this by mistake is beginning to hack me off - and this is coming from someone who's played MGS1, MGS2 were it does the same thing control wise, but this time it's a bugger because the game mechanics have changed to outdoor and lying down and crawling is absolutely necessary, whereas previous games didn't need this so much because you were moving from corridor to behind box crates more often.
What makes this game particularly harder (if i leave the old control scheme aside) when compared with the previous two games is that there's no radar like the other two where you have an indication of an enemy soldiers field of vision and their movement. OK, it's more "realistic" this way in MGS3, but it's also a lot tougher. In the old games you just watch the radar, wait for the soldier to look away and then sneak past. For MGS3, where we are in the outdoors and wide open space, it's difficult without the old radar because it means you have to watch the soldiers movements a lot more carefully. They are already harder to spot because they are camoflaged to a certain degree also. Maybe it's just me but on the "normal" difficulty setting soldiers seems A LOT more alert to your prescence. Just the slightest noise in the bush and they come over to investigate. The trouble being there not many places to hide in the wide open.
Also, i don't know why but i'm not really feeling the vibe of this game. It could be the jungle setting. i always knew it would be like this, and it was something i thought i'd love but in practise i don't know if it's a location i'm fond of yet. I like how there are new gameplay elements (like snake eating, surgery cures, camoflage) tailered to the new environment, i'm just not sure whether i like the open spaces and the difficulty it brings.
MGS3 seems to have a much lower-key opening. I noticed when i popped the disc into the PS2 and waited - no opening cutscene kicked in automatically. Only after playing for about 3 hours does the main "title" kick in, a bit like a James Bond movie where you have the opening before the show. It's a good idea, but i was playing for a while thinking.. "ok so where is the big opening"?
And while i'm at it, Are the cutscenes in-game rendered? There's something a bit more basic looking about them when compared to the sleakness of Sons of Liberty. Artisically they have good direction, but i can't quite put my finger on it, they seem a little rough around the edges. They don't seem like the true pre-rendered CGI goodness of Twin Snakes or Sons of Liberty? Somehow there's an ever so slight "lag" effect on cutscenes, which would make sense if it's using in-game renders, rather than seperate CGI videos.
Anyway, after all my complaints, i'm still playing it. I'm determined to give it a fair go, even though i'm 7 hours in.. :suspect:

yeah i think it was the same ppl who made Twin Snakes or Sons of Liberty cuts seans for mgs3 ( some of them look quite poor)
dont give up on it yet Idle Child , when i started it i did have the feeling it was gonna be a poor mgs game but when u get deep into it your like it
took me 21 hours and 20 min to complete
one tip for anyone whos playing- dont over look the CQC ( press circle when close to the enemy.. as you can go ninja with a knife )
i didnt really use CQC untill near to the end of the game.

What i want to know is if once i knock out a trooper and i see the "Zzz" signs around their head, and then i pick them up, why can't i then snap their neck or slit their throat while they are asleep? All i can seem to do is drag them around? I'm sure in MGS2 once you knock them out you can still choke them? Or am i dreaming?
messia09
06-03-2005, 01:25
no i dont think u could choke them once their knocked out, try equiping a knife and cutting them up while your kneeling,
( later in the game u get a small fork which u can stab bad guys with )

The right thumbstick shifts the view to put Snake either top, bottom, left or right of the screen...it threw me for a while, like most of the controls, but now I'm CQC'ing like the MASTER.

Well perhaps its me but this must be one of the most frustrating games EVER
can not hep but feel if it was not part of an established franchise people would be moaning about many things but because its MGS its ok
the camera is awful - the whole point of a stealth game is to avoid enemies but the camera seems so close and tight that its nigh on impossible to do properly
the controls and mad - three buttons to be pressed for one action - and firing a gun makes no sense - hold button and release to fire - or hold then press again - wft - its more like a rubiks cube than a game
its good looking and no doubt a very good game - but its just so frustrating

Erm, May I suggest the manual? ;) If you press "x" hard or hold it down, Snake goes to a Standing position from prone. I did exactly the same for a while
What makes this game particularly harder (if i leave the old control scheme aside) when compared with the previous two games is that there's no radar like the other two where you have an indication of an enemy soldiers field of vision and their movement. They hear better, true but they dont have the reactions of a jungle puma this time, you can spring out and mash CQC from angles/distances where in the other MGS' you would be spotted and shot for sure, guards seem to actually be taken by surprise for a split second allowing you to get the drop on them.
Also, you'd be surprised, when your camo index is 85-95%, how close gaurds can get to you in tree stumps/long grass. I've been ina tree hollow and litterally "saw the whites of their eyes" but he didnt twig i was there. Same in the grass, they have pretty much been right infront of me and not seen me, allowing me to pop up, stalk then slit their throat.
They dont seem to check the tree branches either. Throw a moldy ration or live animal to distract them
Also, i don't know why but i'm not really feeling the vibe of this game. It could be the jungle setting. i always knew it would be like this, and it was something i thought i'd love but in practise i don't know if it's a location i'm fond of yet. The enviroment changes wierdly, Urban, river, Mountain, Cave, Sandy areas...I'd love to see which area of the Soviet Union this was set in ;)

Sorta agreed, loved the James Bond style opening though, I would have been gipped other wise, that saved it for me

Yeah, I noticed this, a slight 'stutter' at certain points, wondered if it varied console to console as all PS2's seem to have a personality of their own...obviously it does.
Anyway, after all my complaints, i'm still playing it. I'm determined to give it a fair go, even though i'm 7 hours in.. :suspect:

I'm liking the game, but it's very tricky.. I'm playing the same part over and over and over again, and it's right near the beginning too (the abandoned building)!
I've played it through about 9 times now, trying to do it without getting caught, so my hours total is going to be sky hour. The thing is, it's all good fun :D
But yeah, without the radar it's annoying knowing if you've found all the enemies or not.. I keep sneaking up on one to kill him, only to be seen by another. Grr.

yeah i found this a bit annoying too
With no MGS3 to play yet I decided to start playing through MGS2: Substance last night and even though I haven't played the latest game yet a few things occurred to me. It surprised me how much I relied on the radar in MGS2. I got 19 dog tags on the tanker and another 23 up until the "Fatman" boss. Not having a radar to time my moves would probably influence me to avoid the guards or to use lethal force and lose the dog tags. It would probably take me longer to scope out an area before making any moves at all. When I think of other stealth games like Thief your eyes and ears are your radar. The jungle environment will make it difficult but relying on using your senses still sounds appropriate for the setting and even the decade the game is set in.
The controls in MGS2 are complicated and it can take time to learn, or to re-learn what used to be second nature. The controls are a lot different from other games but then so is the related camera set up. Mastering the controls and mastering the tools of your stealth trade almost seems like one and the same thing (which I like). With MGS3 introducing camouflage, hunting/eating, surgery/restoring health and even better Close Quarters Combat (CQC) it is going to take time to learn the tools that will help you in this particular jungle setting. After playing some of MGS2 again I know I won't be able to apply everything I know and be instantly good at MGS3. But mastering Metal Gear Solid is all part of the gameplay.
The funny thing is, if MGS3 had been set in the present I think that even fans of the series would begin to recognise that more of the same is another way of saying stagnation. At least they are still adding new gameplay elements and trying to make it more realistic.

I havn't really found the camera to be much of an issue as i tend to place the camera myself using the right-stick, then "stick" it in place (R3), i agree that the default view is normally too close for comfort, but by giving the right stick a wiggle you can usually get a much better view of you and your surroundings, much better for those sneaking moments near enemys.
I'm guessing i'm about halfway through the game at the moment, and i'm absolutely loving it. Also, has anyone been looking out for all those damned frog figures dotted around everywhere? They get in some wierd places :)

Bit further in now, getting a bit better (although thats probably because there's not too many enemies up till now after the cut scene and I keep CQC and slitting throats), i'm not really feeling like a high class operative though, I wouldn't mind no radar if the game had the same type of view as 'Splinter Cell', they should really have redesigned Snakes view etc
MetalGearAl
06-03-2005, 13:26
I've held up two guys, but didn't get any dog tags.. to be honest I'm sticking with slitting peoples throats as I go, rather then avoiding them / knocking them unconcious.
When I played Splinter Cell I actually found it fun to play the game without firing a single shot or killing anyone, but I imagine this would prove to be too tricky in MGS3.
3 hours to get to the credits.. so I'm quite slow at this. The credits were awesome though :D

I guess this sums up what I was trying to say in about 56,000 posts! Nice one! The first time i played for a couple of hours, I thought it was hard and worse than MGS and MGS2, and annoying.
I actually found the "stealth" harder in MGS and MGS2 with the radar off because you do rely on the "Vision cone" so much. I kind of dig the new way of doing it, people need to trust the CAMO index more and actually scope things out. I find myself using the scope for the first time in MGS ever, I like to have a look around a plan a POA for the next area. Also, as i said earlier, gaurds can see you but you still have time via CQC to take them down without them launching an instant barrage. It's a evolution of the system, and a welcomed one at that.

You need to shoot all of the frogs (I think there should be one in each area). Getting all of the frogs rewards you with Stealth Camo You don't need to get them all on your first play through as if you load off a completed game save it will remember which ones you have shot.

Best MGS ever IMO.
Finished the US version last-year and as someone rightly pointed out, there is an emphasis on the camo rather than the Soliton Radar, which is a nice omission IMO. If you want your hand held through it, use the Motion Detector, bearing in mind it will pick up EVERYTHING in the jungle.

I started playing this on friday night and finished it yesterday, my time was around the 21 hour mark.
At first, I really missed the radar, and yes, the whole X to lie down/crouch thing annoys the hell out of me when its time to run for it, but I loved this game, some of the boss battles were excellent, my personal fave was the sniper battle against The End, i sneaked up on the old geezer and capped him right in the back of the head.... I had that bible passage from Pulp Fiction going through my head as a pulled the trigger :)
But right up until the final few boss battles I had trouble with the cqc controls, every time i grabbed the guy i'd immediatly cut his throat, i'm hoping to get the cqc stuff nailed down on my second play through.
The story was good, im glad that things didnt get as crazy as MGS2, because as much as I love MGS2, it didn't make a whole lot of sense towards the end.
Overall I loved every minute of it and can't wait for MGS4, I just hope they keep the same sorta story going with either Snake or Big Boss, cos from the sounds of things MSG was intended as a trilogy and the next game could be a new thing all together.

To get the CQC right you really need to remember that the buttons are analogue - Don't press down too hard and you won't slit their throats.

Struggling to get into this so far .... Numerous attempts to rescue the Professor using stealth have been unsuccessful so far. Have done it by killing most the guards but i'm trying to avoid using that easy approach. Kept finding myself returning to playing Mercenaries. Not as slick a game, but much less frustrating & more fun.... Of course both games will be quickly ignored once GT4 arrives this week....

As anyone gotten to "The Sorrow" yet?
For me now, it's really starting to take off, and i'm 21 hours in (yeah, i'm a slow gamer with numerous of attempts). Wasn't particularly fund of this game, but the story really has me involved now.
Firstly, seeing Snake get what must be the beating of his life from Volgin - OUCH. I thought for a minute it was going to be gameover and maybe i'd have to control another character. Most vicious beating i've seen in a computer game, Tekken has nothing on this.
Then - you have the interogation scene - was expecting that i'd have to keep pressing triangle to fend off a shock, but luckily you just watch - This is probably where Revolver Ocelot gets his ideas of torturing Snake in the first and 2nd game.
AND THEN - Meeting the Sorrow - now that is level design. Something different from the normal run around and shoot thing with the other Cobra bosses. Wading through the swamp trying to avoid the undead. Very atmospheric and very metaphorical too. Almost had me feeling guilty for all the killings.

I found the most of it frustrating for at least an hour. You don't have to avoid everyone but do it as much as possible.
Changing camo is actually a great touch and you'll get used to it (for your own benefit)!
I'd say give it until the opening titles at least (which could be anywhere around 2 hours of playing). If it's not got you a little hooked by then, it's probably not for you.
The last 10-15 minutes before the opening titles in particular had me absolutely glued to it (eventhough it's basically cut-scenes).
it better get good. or i'm gonna trade it tomorrow.
You need to be patient.I found it just too damn hard at first but the game has finally got it's claws into me now and I'm loving it.
The few boss battles I've had so far have been fab and late last night I completed The End boss and honestly that was the best boss scrap I've ever had in a MGS game but whoever said patience is a virtue was so right, if he gets you he doesn't kill you but takes you back a few levels which was a right pain in the arse.I was a little worried at first because I chose to save before fighting The End and the save chick, I forget her name said do you really want to save now because she said she suspected something bad would happen.Luckily so far I haven't found out what she meant. :suspect:
I can't wait to get home from work tonight and get back to it.Like all the previous MGS games there is always something surprising waiting for you to discover.Crackin' stuff, give it time.

Something very neat about The End boss fight...
If you save it mid-fight, leave it for a week, then go back to it you'll find the old fella has croaked it.
Similarly, if you only leave it a few days, he would've crept up on and caught you.

Nope, only this particular scenario if you save it during battle.

Certain things do occur whilst the game is turned off, snakes health restoring being one that I know of and food going off if you leave the game for too long is another one. Neat little touches.

Just read this at the ign boards.
"Bought MGS3 the week it came out, and I played until the battle with The End, and then I just kinda stopped playing. I started playing Metroid Prime 2, then Paper Mario, and before long I just forgot about it.
I decided yesterday to go ahead and finish the game. At this point, it had been almost 4 months since I touched the game. I was all prepared for my epic battle with The End. I loaded the game, and was immediately greeted to a cutscene where Snake finds The End, dead on the ground. Apparently, he had been waiting 4 months for me, and finally kicked the bucket in the middle of the woods laugh Snake radios the Major, and laments the fact that The End's last wish had been to battle Snake. The Major reminds me that this is war, not a game, and I should just be grateful to have that obsacle out of the way."

tips for beating The End.
if you have picked up heat vision goggles use them... if you get close to him your be able to see him + his foot prints
but if you havent go HVG try runing around like a mad man then once he starts shooting at you find some cover and use an Ak or m16 to shoot him (on single shot) .
+ you can also use the directional micophone to hear him then take him out.

Head to the hut which is in the north of the section where you face The End.
Sniper rifle is in the hut.
Go to the sniper points and try to start working out roughly where the shots are coming from.
Use the binoculars too - once you've found him, you're golden. I noticed that a bit of sunglare came off him too. He's there - just keep looking. 90% of the difficulty is finding him so try to be methodical about where you've been and where you've looked.

LOL, if that is true then that is quality programming. Wouldn't recommend waiting 4 months to beat a character though, as looking around for him for 2 hours was bad enough. What makes spotting him so hard is the area you have to cover (it's about 3 or 4 maps i think) and the constant switching from first to 3rd person view. This challenge really tests your patience depending on your approach. Imagine how tough the battle would be if instead of darts he shot bullets that took a damage to health. I know i'd have given up then!

I took up a sniping position, but used claymores to protect my flanks (I went on the ridge by the waterfall) and just waited. The Thermal goggles seem to be able to see his footprints, you can see where he has just ran and maybe outflank him?
Another tactic I used was to run around like a madman, draw the fire, dive behind a obstacle, then pop out and beat him to the punch with the sniper rifle.

Well I got to the bit where Snake gets a serious kicking. Felt sorry for him!!!
Problem now is that I can't get out of that bloody cell!!!!! I've hidden under the bed, tried throwing cans of food at the guard, tapping until he gets really irate, and scanned LOADS of frequencies to see if I could get the one that opens the door. Found some great radio stations on the way at least!
I think I now know that I've got to give the guard the good food, and eat all the 'bad' food (with the fly symbol on). Have spent at least an hour trying to get out so far though. Very annoying.
Were the hell are the thermal goggles? I aint got them and trying to fight the end :(
Are they in the cell building? So might be worth getting caught so sent back to get them. Or they in a completely different section and no chance i can get them now?

How the hell would you beat The Fear (and hence reach The End) without having the Thermal Goggles? I relied on them for him.
The End was pretty scary.. at one point I laid on the ground searching for ages in FPS mode with the binoculars. When I lowered them and it zoomed out he was standing behind me! I almost fell out of my chair, as did the two people watching me play :D
After that I found the best tactic was to just run after him with thermal goggles equipped and a shotgun.. soon didn't take long :D
Quite an easy boss really, just time consuming at first. He's quite sprightly for an old geezer.

Err yeah thinking about it they would have been handy.
I ran around abit avoiding the arrows then quick to FPS spotted him by the little electric or movement like predator and unloaded on him. A few times i was able to follow him in FPS and just keep shooting.
Right of to look for the thermal where i was looking for Sokolov there a few lockers i didnt look in.

That's a real 'Predator' moment - chasing vaguely moving silhouettes!!!! Very funny though and no, I didn't have (and still don't have) the thermal goggles so it was quite tricky.
When I found The End though, he seemed to run off and return to the same spot each time - took a while to find him but not long to waste him!

I really can't remember.. either there or in the warehouse area before that with the steps and 3 guards. They weren't in that box that you had to drop down onto were they?
I had my first play on Metal Gear Solid 3 last night. Not a very long play because I watched Hero and some of the extras on ST:First Contact. I spent most of my time in the first two areas getting used to hunting for food. One of the things the reviews didn't mention was that you can literally close your eyes and listen to the sounds of the jungle and even hunt with your eyes closed using the knife. The visual clues are there as well such as movements in the long grass but I think I'll be relying on sound quite a bit in MGS3 particularly because the soldiers can be hard to spot. The directional microphone and sonar are useful tools as well.
As predicted, the first time I took on a soldier using stealth it all went horribly wrong. He could hear me before I got close enough to hold him up and they were difficult to evade. It seems I'm not the only one who relies more on sounds in this game. But once I found out about using the D pad for stealthy approaches it became easier. The first soldier I tried holding up (instead of just using the Tranq' gun) I managed to interrogate him by pressing the L3 button. He told me to be careful of the hornets nests in this area. I find it quite difficult to interrogate them because of the tense situation it is easy to accidentally push too hard on the circle button and slit their throats before they've had a chance to say anything.
I also had a quick play with the Ape Escape mini game which is total genius.
First impressions are that it's awesome. All the familiar gameplay elements are there but tweaked to take advantage of the new environment. The old and new gameplay features have been so well integrated that it sells the illusion of actually being in a survival situation in a jungle. I haven't even scratched the surface of the main game yet.

And if you're enjoying it so much so soon then I have no doubt that this is an absolute beauty for you.
I remember copping out of MGS2 at the part where there was a room full of soldiers in the ship being briefed and they would turn around and do exercises. Just couldn't do that bit. Funny as hell when the whole room sees you - about 50 red exclamation marks and that "you've been spotted" alert noise!

On my most recent play through the Tanker chapter I collected a lot of the dog tags up until that point. But then once I got to the hold I decided to get on with the Plant chapter. It only takes you 3 minutes to get from the start of the briefing in the ship's hold to the final cutscene of the Tanker chapter.
Just crawl in front of the projector and crawl down the left side of the room to the next hold. Do the same again but in reverse, so you crawl down the right side of the second room. Then take 4 photos from different parts of the next room. Walk over to computer, upload the pictures and then the final lengthy, but action-packed cutscene kicks in.

what u need to do is...
go back ( if you have not save the game ) and watch the FMV when snake gets a kicking... when L2 pops up hold it down and u can see a man holding a radio code ... which opens the door, but if u cant go back try taking the fake death pill
the radio code is---
144.75 or 144.74 its deffently 144.7 not sure of the last digit
^^ On PSM2s cover DVD they had a few Metal Gear solid 3 videos. In one of them, Snake grabs a soldier and interrogates him:
Snake: "Speak!"
Soldier: "Radio...141.85".
On the video you see the radio being tuned to that frequency and then music kicks in with the name of the track also listed. On another part of the DVD they have the Snake Eater opening credits.

Try using the D pad not the analog stick to get close to the enemy. Two other important things. Firstly, when you try to grab them make sure you aren't holding the left analog stick (and probably the D Pad as well) in any direction. You should be standing still and only be pressing the circle button. Secondly, you have to hold down the L3 button (push the left analog stick down) and hold it down to interrogate. Try it more than once, guards usually have a couple of things to say.
If you are holding the circle button down too hard you'll automatically slit their throat (even if you don't have the knife equipped). You can choke them with the same button but eventually they'll be knocked out. But you can still slit their throat at that point rather than have them wake up and sound the alert. Although you can shoot their radio so they won't be able to. You can also use them as a human shield by shifting from the circle button to the square button.
There's lots of useful advice on the controls if you go to Special and Basic Actions. For instance, if you shoot a soldier's right hand they'll drop their weapon. The Manual is always a good place to find out things as well: I've learned that you can hold up a guard/soldier who is already "sprawling" on the ground.
Hope some of that helps. Definitely take the time to check out Special / Basic Actions though, especially for CQC.

I must have spent 2 hours trying to get out of that cell. I even tried to make the food get contaminated by throwing it in the toilet - but all that did was cause some strange glitch which made the food container hover above the toilet whilst jerking around (rather than spinning smoothly!!!!).

I finished MGS3 last night - but as I'm a wimp who cannae handle the tough games any more, I was playing on Easy. Shocking, really, as I completed MGS2 on Hard... maybe I'm getting old. I'll probably give Normal a try soon, though.
I must say I enjoyed it loads. It followed in the great traditions of the MGS games - infiltration mission, gang of freaks, showdown with massive tank thingy - while adding plenty of new stuff with the camo, healing, eating and so on. I got completely stuck only once, when I couldn't work out exactly how to get away from The Sorrow, but I eventually twigged. (An accidental press of a button at the correct time may have pointed me in the right direction.)
MGS3 is possibly now ranked second to the Tanker section of MGS2 in my estimation.

i completed the game in the early hours of monday morning. Like many it was the "just one more cut-scene" way of thinking and i was hooked. i had an idea i was near completion, the MGS games have a habit of giving you this impression the way the story seems to take off for the almost never-ending-not-quite-over-yet fights with the main characters.
I must say, the Shago-watshamacallit levels with Volgin were great.
I mean the Bike ride out of the Grozney Grad with Eva was something to behold. No frame-rate slow-down and just SO intuitive, i felt. I mean i wasn't sure how the controls worked but she seemed to drive and respond exactly how i intened. It could have all gone tits-up due to the camera angles but for me it was all extremely slick. The animations and the gameplay were tied in perfectly. And in TRUE Metal Gear Solid style it just kept on going... and going and just when i thought i'd done it, no - not quite yet there's one more battle with Volgin to engage. The final one where he's on top of the Shago-thing was annoying, but the whole bike riding and Return of the Jedi rip-off and then the sniper bit, that was sheer class.
And then, you know what's coming, the inevitable fight with
The Boss. I wanted to give her the beating of her life considering that she'd continually whoop Snake in every single cut-scence. But then i found myself really respecting her spiel. Top tip for The Boss: Stay low and just crawl. Use the AP sensor to hear the sound, on the closest beeps, aim your machince gun in that direction fire away, watch her take a hit and when she takes no more, quickly crawl somewhere else. Staying low like this helped me school her. Terribly easy in a way, but the visuals of the white flower fields is an image that will stay, along with the Sorrow level, and the Eva Bike escape.
Overall, and it took me a while to get into, a decent game. Initially i was not that taken, but as always the story roped me in. And it's got some fantastic set-pieces.
I completed it in around 28 hours (so i'm not the fastest). No code this time i noticed, so i can't check my rank (it would be low anyway) compared to all the other Metal Gear nuts.
Oh yes and has anyone played with the SAS Revolver? use R1 to aim it when equiped and the the R stick to twiddle it on the trigger and do some tricks. Neat touch i thought.

Damn it. Those signed copies on ebay make me feel sad i didn't wait a bit and head down to Oxford Street. I would've loved that exclusive HMV sleeve and more importantly, a chance to meet the game creator and have his sig on the box. I wouldn't sell it on, I'm too much of a MGS fan for that. :oh-hum:

I'm stuck, quite early into the game :(
Basically, after Eva drove off on her motorbike, I walked off through the gates and across the pond - and have come to an electric fence blocking my way. I've switched off the power but climb/crawl past it.??
Look to right hand side and crawl

I just lay down in grass and tranq/ak47'd each group of soldiers as quick as i could. I think i read somewhere you could tranq Eva yourself and simply drag her to the exit inbetween killing the soldiers, might be a tactic worth trying of you're having trouble.

Yeah, that was a real pain. I thought that level brought the game down after the previous excellent escape levels.
I didn't tranq her (cos i never thought of that), i just kept on ahead and killed all the guards in our path. What was really annoying was that her stamina ran out so quick and i kept having to forage for food every minute and the map isn't exactly overloaded with food either. Feeding her took away most of my supplies too! Got through in the end just barely by killing all the guards with quite a few rations stops here and there.

Also, to combat "The Fear" try switching to Night Vision goggles. With all the glare from the fire, it can be tricky to spot him, but you should seem him better when things settle. If you get a few shots in early with an MG, he'll take some damage. Best yet, try to catch him walking past a full tank and blast the drum. It should explode and take more of his health. Then run off before he gets a chance to counter with a fireball blast. He's usually on the 2nd to last edge of the walkways, patrolling up and down. He's a hard boss to fight. I wasn't fund of this encounter at all.
In the last game you could knock out/ kill guards and pick them up, putting them into lockers. How do you do that in this game?
You got to sneak behind a guard then press and hold O. If you keep pressing O you will choke them or if you hold O you slit there throat. To drag them stand over the body and hold the square button.
Great Game BTW! :notworthy

Once they are knocked out, much the same as the last game, you have to first open the locker and then drag them to the open locker and go inside. The game should automatically make Snake put them inside, come out and shut the door.

Press L3 when you have them in the choke-hold and Snake shouts 'Speak' they then relinquish various bits of information such as...
many will tell you to check the map, when you do you will find that it is now marked with extra bits of information such as item box or enemy locations. Plus, one gives you a remarkably helpful 'cheat' for The End boss sniper duel
Just finished it last night and have to say the whole game is sublimely brilliant in pretty much every aspect from the cheesy opening them tune to the brilliant boss fights. The camera had a few issues but nothing I couldn't deal with

I think "Big Boss" turned/turns against the US because of the way they treated "The Boss", She was Americas greatest hero who gave her life as part of this mission, there was no "you might die" stuff, she took the mission knowing that for the mission to be completed she would have to die and at the hands of her apprentice, and I'm guessing that "Big Boss" ends up hating the fact that she ("The Boss") will be forever remembered as a traitor and that he had to kill his mentor all because its what the american government decided had to be done to get the philosophers legacy back.

I loved the way that
the right edge of the screen was faded and dark once you lost the eye.
It's those little touches that really make a Metal Gear Solid game.

How do i counter CQC the last baddy.
wait till the " ! " appears over your head and mash circle, you'll block and small counter, the Boss is then ripe for a CQC of your own.

use the M60 (light machine gun, its the one with 200 rounds per clip) if you use that gun and keep shooting him he cant move, then you start to hurt him ;)

Tried this but he kept blasting me. Then tried grenades, then CQC, etc. THink ill just give it a break for a few days and then try again.
Bringing this back from the dead for a quick question - I'd like to poison the guards with some rotton food, but haven't managed it yet. I throw the food to them, they go over and check it out but don't actually eat it. What am I doing wrong? Is it even possible?!

You need to destroy the food stores found in the levels using TNT - they're the ones with boxes in them. Guards will then start saying things 'im so hungry' and 'i haven't eaten in ages' - then just ply them with the tainted food ;)
So is a food store just a random box near the enemies?
No its a hut or cabin which contains food/ammo crates.
