I have recently bought a Yamaha RX-V420RDS surround AV receiver and a Panasonic RV-31 DVD player. Both are DTS compatable. They are connected by an optical lead.

Options within the DVD setup are:
1) PCM Down Conversion is set to yes
2) Dolby Digital is set to Bitstream
3) DTS Digital Surround is set to Bitstream

The Amp is set to DVD Auto so that it will select the appropriale input.

I have tried playing both Gladiator and Shrek, both DTS DVDs, but neither is detected as DTS by the amp, and hence DTS is not produced.

The Amp only detects Dolby Digital which I admit sounds excellent however having spent the additional money to get DTS I would like to hear is it is different. If the Amp is set to DTS input no sound is heard.

Does anybody have any ideas if anything further can be changed to make the DTS changed.

The DVD player is a multiregion version supplied by Techtronics, however I do not think this is related to the problem.

I would be grateful for help from anybody who knows more about this than I do, which I am sure is most of you!

I assuming that you went into the setup on the 2 discs and selected DTS? DTS is never the default soundtrack.

Does that show that I am new to this game! I am off to try it, I will report back.

Done the trick and it works!

At last DTS - can't really tell the difference though!

Thank to everybody for the advice.

i found that DTS sound slightly better separated than 5.1, but both sound stunning compared to how i used to watch them before i bought me amp
