Same old Arsenal, always cheating :( Still we're probably more to blame for that. Naybet lost the ball twice that led to goals. We were unlucky on the Henry goal, went through King legs and wrong footed Robinson. The Pires goal was annoying because Ziegler got a good tackle in but it fell to Pires and Pamarot was out of position.

Defoe's goal was class though and it's good to see two defenders getting goals

now Santini has gone they can score, but can't defend to save their lives

Not really, since Edman got injured we've been leaking goals and scoring more. Today was the first time we scored more than 1 goal in a Premiership match (excluding penelties). I don't think Edman is match fit yet but we had too many injuries at left back and he's been rushed back.

The Aura of Arsenal is rarely present (at least defensively) whwn Cygan is on the pitch. That's not to say he's the only problem, but he's no Sol Campbell.

 Arsenal conceded more goals today, than Chelsea have the entire season!

Indeed, and they scored more away league goals in those 90 minutes than Man U have in the entire season too.

Oh and T@xman, i think its your team on the slide not ours   ;)
Au contrare, my friend! I'd say that the fact such a "poor" team totally outplayed Arsenal for vast periods of the match (say, the entire 1st half and most of the second too), I'd say that we are anything but on the slide! In fact, I'd say that Arsenal were extremely fortunate that our defence was quite so generous, otherwise Arsenal may well have been on the wrong end of a right good tonking today. However, fortune appears to forever shine on the scum, and today you got away with it.....your luck can't last forever!
I'd also go as far as to say that the sort of football e played today is the larger part of why I became a Tottenham fan, and I am proud of my team and what they brought to the table.
On a side note, may I just add that the Arsenal support was yet again amongst the worst in the league. Charlton admit to having a crap away support, but even they were more vocal than your lot, whom I might add didn't sing a song until midway through the 2nd half(when 2 goals up)! :oh-hum:

5 Defeats in a row?? 14th in the table?? Well maybe not on the slide, just bad :D

Ive got to agree with you, we are poor when i goto games i try and get us to start singing and it works for about 3 minutes then it stops. I think we are trying to get some more vocal support from our fans though.

To be honest it was a great game of football and one that i think we'll remember for a while yet. I dont think were on the slide, and i hope we prove that in the next few weeks.

Well I wasn't disputing we aren't on a slide, because since the Utd game, and even the CL games before, from set pieces/simple defending/lehmann, clearly we are losing the plot. I was just saying, although our goals were gifted today, so were spurs. Defoe's was a great strike, but I felt our defenders paved a way for him.

Maybe they whispered it, or maybe the TV crew were located in the away section, because I can assure you that noone else in the stadium heard it. Seriously though, I wasn't commenting on it purely in spite at Arsenal, your fans were really that bad today - by far the worst away fans I can ever remember at a London derby(other than Charltons), and no where near what I'd come to expect.

Given didn't aim to take out Scholes, but he did impede him. Definite penalty, but still unlucky

If a defender went for the ball in the penalty area and the attacker pushed the ball past him and the defender then upended the striker, would it be a penalty? What is so differenent with a goal keepers challenge?

jayok
14-11-2004, 17:24
Given didn't aim to take out Scholes, but he did impede him. Definite penalty, but still unlucky

By the same logic, most penalties are unlucky because most players that give away a penalty do not mean to take the player down. For penalties, most players mis-judge the tackle or the speed of the opposing player or the skill of the opposing player.

Sam
14-11-2004, 17:29
I agree 100% jayok (that must be a 1st ;)). Given went for the ball, Given missed the ball and in the process stopped Scholes getting to the ball - definitely a foul and therefore a penalty. The fact he wasn't yellow carded shows that the ref believed he was genuinely attempting to play the ball rather than it being a professional foul but that doesn't make it any less of a penalty.

Francis
14-11-2004, 17:30

Plenty are unlucky, wouldn't class tackles that are late or mistimed (whether they intended to take the player/ball or not) as unlucky, just a bad tackle.
This particular time I could easily have imagined the ref playing on and us getting nothing.
Either way, I thought it was unlucky, you didn't, fair enough.

edit - just to reiterate, I agree with it being a penalty. And have now made a mental note not to post about unlucky penalties

But usually a defender will be going in for a challenge on a player who is already in possession of the ball - therefore they must realise, as you say, that mis-timing it will produce a foul.

In this case Given was making a genuine attempt to dive onto what was effectively a loose ball - it was just unlucky for him that he fell across Scholes' path as he missed it.

I think that it probably did have to be a pen because he did impede Scholes - but it was very unlucky on Newcastle.

jayok
14-11-2004, 17:35
I think it was unlucky for Given but the laws of the game dictate that if a player is fouled (deliberate or not) in the plenty area, it is a plenalty. It would have been an incorrect decision if the ref did not give a penalty in the situation

Just to throw another one into the pot. As no-one had control of the ball and Given blocked off Scholes could it not be classed as obstruction? And if so an indirect free kick in the penalty area?

If two players are going for a loose ball in the box and one player gets to it before the other player and the other player takes him down because he was not fast enough... it is a penalty! What is so different if the goal keeper was one of the players?

And Scholes didn't get to before Given - Scholes fell over Given's body on the way to it.

It was a lot unluckier than your standard penalty where defender slides in at an attacker and gets the man not the ball.
