Hi
Thought Id start a new thread as the one in the Bargain Forum was getting off topic in there.
Initial thoughts are brilliant - much better than last years and NO WIRES!
The software is much more comprehensive - more info on screen , speed etc........
Half the price of a Tom Tom Go and just as easy to pop in and take out plus you get a fully featured Pocket Pc as well!
Right now has anybody got an idiots guide to putting speed camera alerting poi's on it?
Also has anybody got any tips and tricks whilst using it - as there seems to be next to no documentation for the navigon software.
What are your thoughts - for £249 - its gotta be bargain of the year........well after the Woolies Phones!
Dave, Oldham.
Install the software from cd1 (mapexport etc) and it also installs a 109 page manual in pdf format. Not the best manual but does explain how to use the software.

Thanks Sarah...........
Will take a look later.
Dave, Oldham.
As far as I can find out for POIs you need to buy POI Warner and then download POI Edit and the pois from www.gpsworld.co.uk. You then convert them to .asc and copy the .asc and .bmp file to Program Files / POI Warner / pois.
There does seem to be a POI directory under Program Files / MEDION / MEDION-Navigator
with an ALDI dir in it , but the format of the files is different. But it does seem to indicate you can load customised pois into it somehow. However aldi pois dont seem to show up so maybe it doesnt work !
Anyway I am now considering buying POI Warner as according to the web it does work.
I used the medion to navigate me to Peterborough and back yesterday. I have to say I was mostly impressed with it. If you take a wrong turn it rapidly recalculates a new route. For instance when I turned into a cul de sac (my fault) I had only travelled a few yards and it told me to make a u-turn!
It also navigated me through some back street of Peterborough which I had never used before as it was set to find me the shortest route.
On the down side I found some of the commands a bit confusing ie saying bear left instead of turn left. It also had a couple of roundabouts mising from it's database although that didn't cause a problem.

For POIs (for TomTom anyway) you can use an app called CheckPoint, which is free.
There should be info on it over on www.pocketgpsworld.co.uk

Checkpoint only works with TomTom.
Anyone know where to get a screen protector for this?

Hi
So which should u select fastest or shortest journey?

I've bought POI-Warner and converted the speed camera downloads from pocketgpsworld (to .asc) and it seems pretty good. Not all the speed cameras in my area are on but it's a very good start.
The PDA is superb value for money and for what you get for £249.00 it's a no-brainer. Buy one if Aldi have any left !!
Now I just need a slimline case for it - anyone know where I can get one ?

I've been selecting fastest and it's been superb so far
Answering m own question but seems like Brando protectors have good reviews, there's a normal slightly textured version fo $12 and ultraclear for $13, I think this includes shipping http://shop.brando.com.hk/

I can't find anywhere that does the covertec one (shown in the medion accessories brochure), not even on covertec's own online shop
Just phoned up Medion UK support and after a long time on hold , I was informed that you cant load new POIs onto Navigon although Aldi seems to have managed it but I guess the makers of Navigon probably did it for them as they were buying a few copies of the software.
So it looks like POI Warner or load TomTom on and use CheckPoint
Daveisherwood
12-11-2004, 12:38
I can recommend POI Warner
Anyone know whether the iPAQ 2210 is the same size as the Medion as I've found some nice slimline leather cases..... :luv:

you can not add the poi direct to navigon, poi sites ontop of it, and overlays the POI
I have the old aldi one and this new one is so much better after having a play of my mates.

Hi All,
I managed to grab one of these yesterday - just had a quick test and pretty impressed so far.
Any idea if its possible to purchase/download/install and use the detailed Ordnance Survey type maps for when out walking ?

Just as a thought, has anyone been brave enough to try and install Tom Tom on their Medion ?
Am curious about it as it appears to come with more features and flexibility and also has the ability to search on full 7 digit postcodes with an added utility which would be EXTREMELY useful.

A company called Fugawi sell cds of OS maps for using with GPS. They are about £50 per region. You need four cds to cover the whole country so if you wanted them all it would work out expensive. Cheaper than buying all the paper maps though.
I have managed to load a map downloaded off multimap for free but it is time consuming. I have done it with the demo versions of oziexplorer. You need three programmes, oziexplorer to calibrate the maps oziexplorer ce to run the software on the pda and another bit of free software to convert the maps to the correct format for the pda.
You can probably manage with the demo version of oziexplorer which is just as well because it is more than forty pounds but I am going to buy the full version of CE because otherwise the programme keeps shutting down after a few minutes. CE is only about £12 though.
Even though the website (http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/navigon-mobile-navigator-4-software.php) says that it should have TMC, I can't find this option anywhere. Anybody know how to get that to appear/work???
Daveisherwood
12-11-2004, 22:50
The version of Navigon that comes with the Medion is a cut-down version and, I believe, TMC is not there.
I have the Tom Tom on my Medion so it will run both seperately, when one can`t find a street the other will, there`s just enough room on the card for both. I find it great.

how? the navigon mmc card is practically full? unless you're only installed one 16MB segment?
EDIT: or using a 512MB card?

Anyone else have a low whistling sound when tapping anything on the START menu, NEW or the GPS icon on the front screen ?
Doesn't seem to happen on the lower menus / software ?
Sarah, did you manage to fix your whistling sound ?

I didn't manage to fix it. Was one of the reasons I returned mine yesterday.
Well going door-to-door to places in towns and cities I've been impressed. However I find it quite annoying not being able to use full postcodes. Also Most of the small villages aren't on the maps

That's the main reason I'm installing Tom Tom and the 7 digit postcode app as we speak - 5 digit postocdes is driving me crazy and that's only after two days !!!
Don't know how you managed to get both sets of maps on the MMC - I had to backup the card and then delete the Navigator maps off first before instlaling the tomtom maps

I have a spare 512 card - is it easy to install Tom Tom?
Ps whats the latest version?
If you install tom tom - is medion still on the pocket pc as well - so u have a choice - or is it one or the other?
Dave.
Daveisherwood
13-11-2004, 08:25
as long as you have both sets of maps on the card then you should be able to run either
Tom tom is easy, yes
To those getting a whistling noise with their unit. I wonder if this is the answer is on the Mio website download page. The download with the biggest number of hits is to cure a noise issue.
Look here http://203.66.161.9/visitor/v_FileDown2004C.asp
Thing is if people are going to put tomtom on there devices, thats what another £100 of software or something? Suddenly this isn't such a bargain.

Yeah, I know.....but the majority of people (who aren't as finicky as me !!) will be happy (sorry, didn't mean to sound patronising !!). The main issue for me is the 7 digit postcode app - if that application worked with the navigon software installed I'd be happy.

Now that I've bought this little gadget and am enjoying sat nav, I wondered what else I can do with it.
As far as the pre loaded software goes, I can't see me using Word and Execel that much.
Is there any other "must have" software for Pocket PC's?

Okay put Tom Tom 3 on...........
but it just says gps position unreliable and doesnt work?

Did you just copy the files off the MMC card to backup up medion navigator?

Right got Tom Tom working and have just give it a trial run.
It is MUCH MORE accurate than the navigon software - and much easier to use.
The voice commands come spot on time and the navigation is super accurate.
The display is not as comprehensive as the navigon ie the sidestreet names arnt shown as you are driving along (or at least I could not figure out how to display road names on the map as you are driving) - but this isnt that important - it seems to permanently have 8 or 9 satellites showing at all times as well.
I think there are free speed camera and 7 digit postcode recognition available as well though not too sure about this - gonna go and check now.

What GPS modem setting are you using? Mine can't pick up any satellites!
Picked one of these up for using on my bike and I'm pretty happy :D Might look into tomtom for it tho
Just installed Tomtom on mine, full postcode support is only available via additional software it seems. Also, how do you change it so it turns GPS off when you exit Tomtom, like on Navigon?
I think checkpoint is best for Speed camera, its free as well.

Managed to install checkpoint and speed cameras - looks good - i downloaded the voice prompts for the cameras as well but not too sure how to install these - anybody?
Also I had to do a hard reset on the back of the machine and wipe the navigon software off............the I installed tom tom and it worked fine.
Secndly when tom tom is installed click on gps status then gps (in the middle at the bottom of screen) - and change the second box down to read serial cable on sp2 - instead of com 1) - then retick the big box next to the option and off you go it all works!

What about the first box? IS it set to TomTom Navigator GPS?
I chose Tomtom wireless and it works.

EDIT: seems like the pocket gps gatso files don't support speed limits :(

Yep Tom Tom Navigator GPS.
Can somebody tell me how to display street names on the map whilst driving?
Dave, Oldham.
Isn't it displayed at the very bottom of the screen?
whiteswan
13-11-2004, 15:38
Yes it is displayed on the bottom of the screen - I mean on the actual map itself - where the arrow icon is that represents the vehicle. It would be useful when stopped at lights etc to see the names of streets that go off the one u r on at the moment.
Dave, Oldham
I'd like to try tomtom but I only have the 256 mb card that was with the PPC. Whats the best way to backup the storage card so I can delete the Medion maps? I've tried just copying the folder and saving to my pc but its taking forever and doesnt seem to actually be transferring any data?
Daveisherwood
13-11-2004, 17:55
it does take a while (I think the cradle connection is crap to be honest) so I took the card out of the back of the PDA and copied via a 5-in-1 device I have connected to USB (handles SD, MMC, Flash etc) and that took about 2 mins to copy to my PC.
Another option is to buy a 512MB MMC (I know this is adding to the cost !!) and have both mapsets on there so you can run Navigator and TomTom if you so desire.......
Thanks Dave was gonna buy a bigger card in a few weeks and I dont have a card reader atm :( Wondering if all the map files are on the quick install CD, if they are then I would think I could just delete it all and install off the cd if i need to I'll have to have a look
Bit of a daft question but can you connect to the internet via the usb cradle which is connected to the pc? Am trying to synchronise my POI but it needs to connect to the internet and I don't have wireless :(
I wouldnt have thought so
Daveisherwood
13-11-2004, 18:30
No, won't work.
Danford, all the files are (as far as I'm aware) on the CDs so you could just re-install. I just wanted to keep them as vanilla as possible so I could just copy back on exactly as it was.
Just got the 7-digit postcode thing working with tomtom - it's a dream !!! Pity it's not built into tom tom but it's a licencing issue I think - costs a hell of a lot more to have it down to that level.....
Yeah mate I just found em :D Am transferring/installing TomTom now

TomTom Navigator 3 for pocketpc* doesn't do what you want. However, TT Mobile, Palm and Go does display them on the map (works quite well on my partners orange spv c500). I would expect a new pocket pc version early next year using the same common navigation engine as the mobile, palm and go.
* the new tt & hp 1710 navigation bundle does come with a "newer" version of tomtom, but it is not available to buy seperately.
Daveisherwood
13-11-2004, 19:03
That's partly the reason that I've got both on my Medion - until one is significantly better than the other I'm gonna keep both

With the postcode thing it's makes it a great package - considering that good in-car units cost over £1k it's an absolute steal !!!
Sarah, do you know whether the 'newer' version uses updated maps ?
I can't say for 100% certainty but it appears they are identical. I have only done limited testing so far though :)
Got the postcode to work. Daveisherwood you are a star
Now i need to test the speed cameras :)
Nancy? yeah I spose I am ;) Got the postcode thingy setup & working too, cheers pal!
Edit: Add to that Im on a bike not in a nice warm, heated car
Can somebody tell me how to assign hardware keys??
"Finally, create a shortcut to ukpostcode.exe and drag it to the "Windows\Start Menu\Programs" folder on the PocketPC (don't drop it in \windows\programs - it won't appear anywhere). This allows you to use the usual PocketPC method to attach ukpostcode to one of your hardware keys, or make it appear in your main menu. Having it hooked to one of the hardware keys is a particularly convenient way of accessing the program when TomTom is running."
Cysy - try Start>Settings>Buttons :)
Finally got chance to mess with this today, never used a PDA before now, and with a little help from these forums got it more or less setup, find the navigator works well and it will do untill I understand it better, managed to put a game on it, which was a doddle, but doesn't it use up the 64k not the 256? How could I use the space on the mem card rather then the small on board?
A dummies guide to installing POI software to this would be a great help to me and a lot of ppl (reading the forums
Thx
BTW anyone got a link for a 512 mem card for this?

You could use UKPostcode to find your destination, and then click navigate to. Once TT has calculated it's route, close TT. The start Checkpoint/TT and then use the find option, and you destination should be in the recent locations list. Pick your destination, and click navigate to. Bit of a long way round, but it should work.

Well thanks to the help and advice of some of you I've installed TTN, ukpostcode, and checkpoint. 7 digit postcode is very helpfull, although as someonw else mentioned the lack of street names displayed on the map in TTN is a bit silly - When using navigon I found this feature usefull when the route planning was poor and I chose my own route. Bring on the update that includes this feature.

yeah i had the same problem i had to do a full reboot and asign it anew name to sync
512MB SD card (better than MMC) can be had for under £30 at ebuyer.
yeah I had the same problem, I pluged into a different usb port and it now works!

hmm both will work? both compatible?
Thought it just takes mmc cards?
I'm using a 128MB SD card atm for tomtom maps, works fine. Its says SD/MMC next to the slot ;)
AFAIK, its SDIO compatible as well so you can get wifi cards and camera's etc.
Got it going again, hard reset it and started again now I know what to do with tomtom etc :)

Re the noise issue - if you listen carefully it sounds like a modem syncing - my own view is that its the GPS data being sent to the PDA via the COM port and being reproduced on a speaker. So its probably not a fault just a "feature" .
To those getting a whistling noise with their unit. I wonder if this is the answer is on the Mio website download page. The download with the biggest number of hits is to cure a noise issue.
Look here http://203.66.161.9/visitor/v_FileDown2004C.asp
Just had a look at this downlaod but seems to be for a phone
Mio 168/168RS
Has anyone tried this and have many people got this whistling problem ?
The Mitac Mio 168 is the Medion MD95000, not a phone.
I've not got the noise on mine, or I haven't noticed it.
According to another forum, there are 7 left at the Aldi in Coalville as of 10am today if people are still trying to get hold of these!

Ah thanks for that , its just the instructions say copy it onto the phone / storage card . Probably just a generic set of waffle for the web site.
Cannot get hold of one of these anywhere ,so i am gonna get one on ebay (still a bargain) does anyone know of the full title , of this product is it a medion or a mitac . thanks
On the back of mine it says Medion MD 95000, but it is apperently a rebadged mio 168.
Its "Medion Mobile Pocket PC Navigation System" (model number MD 95000). A search for medion GPS finds a few.
Are we meant to return the warranty card to medion UK? doesn't Aldi give a 3 year warranty?
It is exactly the same as the Mitac but it is branded by Medion. The Mitac ones are more expensive so it will be cheaper if you get the medion one.
If you want to look at the Mitac (the Mio 168) do a search on novatech and you will see it is exactly the same.
I was going to buy the Mio 168 until I saw the Medion one was the same and cheaper!

I think you probably can with the leather ones - I've bought it primarily to use as a GPS (obviously !!) and then a diary 2nd. Thought they would do the trick and stop it getting scratched in my pocket.
Apart from the navigation sofware and speed camaera locations, what other 'essential' programs, utilities and games should I put onto my new toy?
I picked it up from my Mum on Sunday (she bought it for me as I couldn't get to a branch when it was open) and apart from losing the USB sync cable somewhere in my front room I love it.

Is the speed OK ? Mate of mine got an SD card for his ipaq and he couldn't use it to put the tom tom maps on cos it was too slow.
hmm now you tell me LOL, not tried it yet will be a couple of days of so before I get chance to but why shouldn't it be , I read up on the SD - MMC debate and neither seem really faster then the other overall, just hope that this will be ok, or else it goes on ebay :D
Ok installed Tom Tom just installing the Uk maps, seems to be taking a VERY long time 20 mins and done about 1/4 going to bed so will check again in the morning
WoW!
I had my first real chance to play with this last night and I was so impressed! I was heading back home along the A40, traffic was crappy so I added a block up ahead. A re-route, a load of backstreets later and I was home in no time! Fantastic!
I also had a play with that AvantGo and it looks great. I added all of my favourite websites, BBC News, BBCSport, MotleyFool etc and they sync and are available for offline reading. I.E When im on the tube to work.
Im thoroughly impressed with everything so far.

Global Positioning Systems have this for £360, or Tomtom bundle for £325.
Sorry if this is already posted been looking ages for it
I have Tom Tom 3 and P.O.I -Warner installed
I have downloaded the speed camera update but just cant figure out how to install it, the only reference I can find is for Tom Tom 2 and a few of the files it tells me to copy over aren't in the zip file anyhow?
Copy the POCKETGPS_UK_SC.OV2 and POCKETGPS_UK_SC.BMP to the \STORAGECARD\GREAT)BRITAIN NAVIGATOR MAP directory and overwrite any files you may have. (not in Zip file)
any help would be great THX

So, no problem with the speed of the maps loading in from the SD card then ?
What make was the SD card ?
Just a quick note to say that mine is probably going back.
I am convinced that the top or "Start" toolbar is invisbly overlaying itself onto the whole "Today" screen e.g. if I tap the Today screen anywhere directly below the top, right icons I get a "bubble" with appropriate contents e.g. connectivity or volume or time & next appointment.
This is why I can no longer access "Programs" or anything else in the "Start" drop-down list.
The PDA isn't recognising a specific selection from the drop-down list and thinks I've hit the "Start" button a second time (which rolls the drop-down list back up).
Soft and hard resets no good. A hard reset just leaves me stuck in a never-ending loop on the Align screen.
Total bummer having paid for POI-Warner only 24hrs earlier.

and configer each of the tabs, this takes a bit of learning so is much to long to post here, but its not that hard.

would you say this is the same PDA/GPS as the Medion with just a different label?
"My Guide" Navigator 6500XL
http://www.lidl.co.uk/gb/index.nsf/pages/c.o.oow.20041209.p.My_Guide_Navigator_6500XL
yep, and different navigation software.
No it isn't. It is similar to the one Aldi did 12 months ago. The recent one had an integrated GPS receiver whereas this one has a separate receiver.

Although it looks very similar I dont think it is the same. The pda has higher spec. It actually looks like a better deal than the Aldi one. As well as a faster processor it comes with a 512mb sd card.

If you look at the spec this also has an integrated gps receiver.

Anybody had problems with the socket at the base of the medion????
I noticed that the car charger was no longer charging, then it stopped charging from the cradle.
then i noticed that the whole socket had fallen off!!!! called Medion helpline, take it back they said.
But all of my info is on it!! and I have not backed up 4 a while!!
Anybody else had a problem with the bottom in/out port?
You have to be careful lining it up when connecting to the plug in the cradle, no probs with mine at all.

Yes mine has started to play up also. I had trouble with the car charger as well but fortunately I have an alternative one that still works. The cradle is now intermittent also.
I think it is the cradle that has caused the problem because when the pda is connected to it all the weight is on the socket.
Are you pusing it all the way down on the cradle? if you are then the bottom of the ppc should be resting on the cradle, not just the socket.

I just checked mine and which ever way you position the pda all the weight is on the socket. Maybe there are two different types of cradles, seems unlikely though. Or perhaps there is a bit missing from my cradle which would give extra support to the pda.
The cradle did come in 2 parts, the base with the plug sticking up and a transparent backing piece (clips onto the base) and the back of the ppc rests on this, maybe you haven't clipped that piece on?

Oh dear, looks like thats what the problem is then. Mine is still working but it is a bit intermittent, I hope they will fix it under guarantee if it goes all together .
I bought one of these (http://www.pdairshop.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=258) cases for mine. It's very well made and a good fit. The after sales care from PDAirshop has also been nothing short of superb.

Looks like thats the problem with mine too...it seemed a bit dodgy, just having it sat there taking all the weight, dont remember seeing a clear plastic bit in the box, better get up in the attic and have a look.
Tony.
Apologies for the dodgy pic but you can see the separate transparant piece here (top half) that supports the ppc.
