I was thinking of buying a multi-region enabled Pioneer 444S DVD player, but was wondering about the relative merits of the different upgrades available. For example, is the Techtronics upgrade really as superior as they would have us believe? Is the Home Cinema Heaven upgrade just as good?

I bought a Pioneer Dv340 from upgradeheaven (www.homecinemaheaven.co.uk) (homecinemaheaven) for my Mum back in June and it has handled everything thrown at it. Techtronics has had a hard time of it in these forums so I think must people would recommend Justin and the upgradeheaven crew. They are forum sponsors as well:)

Hi Jules, welcome to the Forums :)

A quick look around the first few pages of the suppliers forum should reveal the general mood towards Techtronics. Basically the consensus is not to touch them with the proverbial barge pole.

Upgrade Heaven are a sponsor of the forums and are ably represented by Justin, they also have special offers for Forums members (check the Bargain forum for these). I believe that the Pioneer you are considering was one of the recent specials too but I may be wrong.

Have fun.

Edit - Doh! Must learn to type faster!

yep, the 444s is part of the UGH November forum offers (http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=29616) , loads of good reviews of the player, and UGH of course :)

I would say the upgrades/mods are just as good as each other so i think you should go on the merits of the supplier.

intresting fact for you - we started with DVD at same time as T (`97) but whereas they did loads of advertising, we concentrated at the time on dealer/trade customers.

Apparently UpgradeHeaven's upgrade is a software only upgrade. Does that mean that they upgrade the firmware directly, and if so, if the manufacturer makes a firmware upgrade, do UpgradeHeaven release a new version of their firmware, and how would customer's get hold of it? Does it ever happen?

I think most pioneers are made m/r by a firmware upgrade/modification, I know my 525 from techtronics is.

I've only ever heard of budget players that need software updates, never a pioneer. Even if there was an update, you will notice very little change, if any. Personally, it's not something I wouldn't even think about.

TBH, I think you're thinking too much on it, just buy the player and start collecting those DVDs now :D
