The Criterion disc is very nice (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/reviews/other/beautybeast.html).
will the pic be any better though the review does mention its not great then again how good could it be?

Ther's no reason that something that old should be able to made to look great. The restored R1 Citizen Kane and the french R2 Bete Humaine are both older, but look absolutely pristine.
The trouble is, if the source material gets into a really bad state - and there are no other versions around - then there's only so much you can do.
The restoration demo on the Criterion disk isn't so much there as an insight into their working techniques, but rather as an opportunity for them to say: "look at the truly awful state this film was in; so you'd better be grateful that we've done as much as we have to make it look acceptable."
Unless a pefect negative turns up in the back of some french wardrobe somewhere, then the Criterion may be the best we can hope for (though I'd be happy to be proved wrong)

I'm happy to be proved wrong, but I've yet to see a BFI disc whose transfer especially impressed me - Throne of Blood was an improvement in many respects, but had some unforgivable encoding errors.
So my instinct would be to go for the Criterion.
the criterion it is
thanks all
