View Full Version : X-Box - Router - PC Help Needed please.
Hi guys, i'm having a problem getting my (modded)xbox to network to my pc & share the net connection. The router is a D-Link DSL-504. I'm running XP Home. I can network my xbox to my pc via a nic, but can't get it to work via the router.
I'm using a straight through cable to the router, and when the xbox is switched on, the link & act lights on the router flash, but i can't ping the xbox. I'm assuming its something to do with the router settings, as its fine when using a X-over cable to a nic, but i don't know too much about networking.
Any ideas where the problem lies? any help much appreciated.

Hey matey, you need to make sure that all devices are on the same network, and all pointing at the right place. without anymore info on your network setup makes it a bit hard to help, but i will try and give you the genral idea.
Easiest way to be would to setup DHCP on the router and then let everything pull it's IP address from that. I cant get into my D-Link router at the mo to see what the setup is like as i am away from home, but looking at the netgear one infront of me it look pretty straight forward, you just need to setup a range, so something like 192.168.0.10 to 192.168.0.20 should do ya fine.
If you want to setup static IP's then you would need to have something like
router = 192.168.0.1
pc = 192.168.0.2 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and DNS and Default Gateway off 192.168.0.1
xbox = 192.168.0.3 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and DNS and Default Gateway off 192.168.0.1
Something like that.
Hope it may help out in some way, if you have any more problems, give me a shout and i see what i can do :)

It's not something like that at all! It's exactly that. :)

Can you ping the xbox? When I use my dashboard, it shows me the IP I have set on the tv. Can you ping this from your pc when it is plugged into the router?
t00thless, done the static ip bit, with no joy still. :(

jamie, nope, can't ping the xbox still. :(
Any more suggestions guys?
Here's a screenshot of one of the router setup pages. Do i need to put the xbox details in here? When i do, i get a little pop-up box saying duplicate. however all the entries on the previous page are blank. :?:

You shouldn't need to worry about adding routes or anything like that, as they are both on the same network.
Only thing i can think of off the top of head at this time in the morning and state i am in is, have you tried a different cable just to make sure it aint broke.
if it works when you have a crossover cable in then it should work through the router.
firewall maybe, zonealarm or something.
Firewall. its normally something like zone alarm having a paddy and stopping it working. Pleas edisable all firewalls and try again, :)
All firewalls disabled already, inc XP's own. :( Will try another cable though, and update in a while. :)
Did you change any settings on the xbox when you started using the Router?
James
Just tried another cable, and it now seems to work. Need to try XBC now to make sure. Many many thanks guys.
