View Full Version : Advice needed on SONY dvd player!
ATM I have the opportunity to buy a top of the range SONY DVD player for £130, but I already own a LG 3320i. Is this worth the upgrade and how much is my old LG worth if I were to sell it?
Anyone with experience of SONY DVD players would be much appreciated.
BTW please don't ask where I'm getting the player from as it is a one off, but if I can get hold of more I'll let you all know!:)
Check that it plays CDR's, Sony's are not well know for this capability.

I have a multi-region Sony 725D. I have had it for a year now and had no problems with any of the infamous problem discs (including Disney).
The picture is great, has all the connections I need and layer changes and assorted stuff are taken in its stride. I have not used any CDR's in it but any CD's I play through sound fine (but not as good as my standalone CD player).
I have quite a few friends that also have Sony DVD players and none have noticed any problems, although a few think that the picture on the 725D is better than their newer *35 series stuff.
If you want anymore model specific info, let me know.

I have a Sony 735 and it is far superior to my previous DVD player (Sammy 709), but as they own Columbia/Tristar they are very difficult to hack. I got mine hacked from Multi-region Magic.
Of course this means there is no quasi-PAL output, so ensure your TV is NTSC compatible, I had problems in that department, but bought a newer Scart switchbox, and RGB outputs in colour no probs. I generally project S-Video onto a 72" screen and the picture quality, various cinema modes etc give a great picture and the 5.1 sound is excellent.

I also have a 725, and absolutly love it.
Had it chipped and it plays anything and everything.
top machine.
what model can you get then?:)
I've got a 725 as well - lovely machine, but cannot be soft hacked - it needed to be chipped, so factor this into the cost....
Oh, and I've never got it to play any CD-R's (but I understand there are some out there that will work, I've not tried hard).

I've got a 735 and my mate's got a 725. Don't know what a top-of-the-range player is now. Progressive Scan? but I guess you mean one at that level. I think the newer 300/400/600/900(?)s can play CDRs fine, but I haven't got any experience of the quality of them. Both the 725 and 735s are very solid good players, the 725 supposedly being better for CD replay, but with the 735 having a few more features. No real problems with mine.

Which model is it? I've had a 7700 for a few years now and I've been very happy with it, no problems with any discs at all yet and the quality seems pretty amazing.
Yep, I've got a 725 as well. Only one problem so far with the stall at the start of Jungle Book. Other than that every so called problem disk sails through.

I've got a 325 or 335(can't remember which) and it's an excellent machine in terms of picture quality, build quality etc. Only problem is that it will NOT play cd-rs at all and I've tried all brands including Princo and Intenso CD-Rs. Ended up buying a cheap BUSH which plays everything I throw at it. Still prefer the SONY for "normal" discs though.

Whuuur! Spooky. I'm just arranging a meeting with a Neil Alford. Not you I presume. Unless you are really a Professor from South Bank University. ;)
Ok heres the deal with sony and CDRs
the sony WILL play CDRs as long as they have a general 'silver' base to them. This range includes Princo, but not EVERY princo from what i've read. The ones Maplin used to sell work fine.
It will play VCD and SVCD without any problems. I hear it will also play XVCD but i haven't tried this. I have tried XSVCD tho, and it cannot keep up with the bitrate and the framerate is VERY jerky.
also, theres no need to convert from NTSC > PAL60 (which is incompatable with VCRs) so unless your TV is pretty poor it shouldn't be a problem.
This is on a 535/6 model. When you say top of the range, do u mean the 7xx series, or the nice £1300 beast they make ;)

By top of the range I mean top of the range according to my local dodgy dealing mate. So could just about mean anything!:( He's ussually pretty good, though all he could tell me was that they retail for over £350! He can't tell me the model ATM as he hasn't received delivery, but I am not expecting anything too spectacular as obviously he has to factor in his business profit. So I'm rather expecting possibly a slightly older model! not that thats a bad thing of course!:)
As long as there not nicked and they work alright!:D

If it's a 9000 or a 7700 I'll have one. :D

by hack i suppose you mean chipped right??
and is the quasi pal think a result of the chip or is it just that the player does not have the feature??
And is there any other adverse side effects due to the chip?
cheers

Regardless of where you have the machine modded (or if its modded already, whos mod it is) no Sony DVD player will output PAL60 for NTSC discs. Its NTSC only, so you`ll need to run it either with RGB enabled via scart, or make sure your TV is NTSC3.58 compatible.
Also, I`d suggest you get a model number first before parting with you dosh, "top end" might mean quite the opposite, some people think the 535 was high end:)

Yes chipped, not a remote hack. There is no quasi-PAL feature, such as on the Sammy 709, so ensure your TV is NTSC compatible. I had this problem where my picture was output in Black and White, I changed my SCART switchbox and everything was OK, it wasn't the TV after all (10 year old Philips 28").
Any adverse affects to the chip? Well, I tried a mate's copy of Psycho R2 a couple of weeks ago and a message was displayed 'This movie cannot be played in this region'. I have never seen this with any other DVD, and apart from that I have had no problems with any DVD whatsoever.
I love the Sony 735, DD 5.1 and DTS output is flawless, picture is simply superb. It looks great too! Recommended.
