My mate has on Force9 broadband (BT) connection which recently stopped working. He reverted to dialup for about a week until his broadband connection was up and running again (this may have nothing whatsoever to do with the following problem).....

Now, as soon as Windows XP starts, his machine appears to fire off emails to what seem to be randomly generated addresses, with titles such as 'Fancy a threesome?' and the like. You know the kind of thing. His virus protection is up to date and blocks some of them, but a lot a still getting through. Any thoughts as to what might be causing this and a possible remedy?

Thanks.

That implies that it sends to addresses in the address book. My mate is fairly certain that these are randomly generated addresses.
