Hi, just saw an pocket pc system which I recently brought for £340 advertised in Aldi for £249. It looks identical to my Mitac Mio 168, but the aldi description says Medion. Novatech and expansys have them for £299 which I think is the cheapest around up until now. Anyway if it is the Mitac, its an excellent bit of kit, just don't drop it.
ps does anybody know where you can get pda lcd screens repaired.

Does anyone know what navigation software it comes with?

I presume these are only available in store and not online from Aldi ?
yeah, instore only...
as the OP says, looks very similar to this one: http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk/viewprod.php?product_id=761 (except i expect the navigation software will be the same as what is normally bundled with the Aldi PDA's)

Been looking through a few other threads and the Aldi bundles come with a version of Navigon.

If it's the same as my Medion wired system's software (Navigon), then there's nowt wrong with it whatsoever. This is a great deal.

The old version on Navigon doesn't look too good.
Hmm pretty interesting, been looking for a gps nav sys for a while now and this just might be the one :)
A few questions,
Does this fit in the car easily and secure, some i have looked at seem flimsy? ( I have a lease car so cant modify it in any way)
Is the "voice" loud and clear enough?
Does it pick up the sat quickly and maintain?
How Long is the battery life?
Just how good is the Sat Nav software compared to Tom Tom? (can you plan door to door?)
Looked at the link from Stu.udb and looks farely straight forward to add speed camera software, also looked at the medion homepage and the one on there seems a lower spec for considerably more!
Very tempted, but need to find out more about this product, cost wise seems a billy bargain! when you compare other PDA GPS packages

I bought an ALDI PDA a year ago for my partner, it ran the Navigon software and she loved it, unfortunately 3 months in the PDA packed in an ALDI refunded the money. The replacement I bought her was an Ipac + bluetooth GPS, running TomTom, she's wasn't happy at all, Navigon is just so much more user friendly and just seems a better product.
Since then I've replaced TomTom with Navigon 4 and she's happy again (if you ignore just how bad Ipaqs and bluetooth are).
By the sound of this, it sounds like Navigon 4 as there are far more CDs than the original kit.

The Toysrus one says it uses Navteq software whereas the aldi one looks like it comes with a version (hopefully the latest) of Navigon. Even if the prices were the same I think I'd go for the Aldi one as the waranty is very reassuring.

more money, but got some spec
I bought one of the original ones that Aldi had (Medion) It is possibly one of the best things I have ever purchased. The Sat Nav is excellent, and very reliable! Everything comes included, no extra 'hidden' charges :)
This one that is on offer, looks almost identical, with the same levels of extras and kit (Incar Holder etc is very good indeed) The advantage of this one is that the GPS receiver is included into the device.
All in all, this is an awesome bargain, and if anyone is thinking about it - don't, just get one - you'll not regret it!

Got to echo what Searla says really. The Aldi kit I got in April this year when they had the last offer has proved extremely reliable. I use it everyday for my work (visiting survey sites) and the voice prompt / map combo mean I never get lost. No more stopping to check a map or ask directions. You will arrive at your destination cool, calm and collected :)
Hopefully the new one will have the M6 toll loaded on the maps. Mine doesn't - the system just thinks I'm offroading at 70mph.

Hello
Long time lurker, but I'd though I'd share some info for this. :) :)
Have to agree with everyone that the earlier version that I bought from Aldi in April this year is one of the best gadget buys I've ever made. Looking at the Aldi link in the first page, from the screenshot (and from the number of CD's supplied as well), this does appear to be using a newer version of the Navigon software. The original version of the software is very good in what it does - simple, straightforward to use and it gets me from 'A' to 'B' every time! This version of Navigon looks a bit more complex with more info on the screen - it can only be better than the original. Don't forget that this is not only a good SatNav system but a pretty decent PocketPC as well - play games, watch video files and do the occasional bit of work on it as well.

I've got the old one too and it's been a very reliable PDA and pretty much flawless when it's been used as SatNav. The Navigon software is a doddle to use and you can now add TMC which will get you free traffic alerts which will automatically re-route you around a problem. The TMC costs a fair bit but is a one off charge for the receiver and upgraded Navigon software.
This package really is a fantastic bargain IMO - I'm interested to see how the integrated GPS does compared to the one on mine.

Daveisherwood

I've been using an "original" Ipaq 3630 with TomTom routeplanner millenium for years now, around the continent it has proved invaluable on family vacations. Ok if you want to find a town but no good at finding the high street though. To get the GPS It's attached to an etrex via serial cable, I reckon it's about time I upgraded. So I will be queuing outside my local store.
Perhaps forum users should wear a lapel badge or something, to easily identify ourselves ;)

N.B i have to use my laptop for work so need to know where i am every minute of the day :gag:
Two questions about this.
Does anyone now how long the battery life is on these devices?
Secondly can you use OS maps downloaded from the internet on it?
The reason for the questions is that I'm wondering if it would be suitable to be used for hiking.
I would be interested to know this also.
I was thinking that it would be worth Upgrading from my Medion for a "wireless" set-up in the car. But if you still need the incar charger attached to power it, its not really worth it??

make sure on the Wifi card that the slot on the PDA is SDIO compliant... the last medion PDA I bought was SDIO compliant from Aldi even though there was nothing in the documentation with the unit to say it was SDIO compliant... a phone call to medion also proved fruitless as they also didnt have a clue... so chances are the new unit will also be SDIO compliant I would say.... dont blame me if it isn't :P
If you look on the Expansys forum for Mio 168, it says it is compatible with the WiFi SDIO cards.
These look like a rebranded Mio (as already said!) I was about to buy the Mio from Novatech but this is cheaper and the s/w is supposed to be better!

Just been into my local Aldi's and they already had them in the back waiting for tomorrow. I tried to get the manager to sell me one now but he refused. He did say that he had a 'few' so as long as I came in in the morning I should be OK (yeah, right !!). It appears (by quickly looking at the box) that it IS the rebranded Mio at http://www.pocketgps.co.uk/mitacmio168.php although couldn't confirm for definite the software that comes with it.

According to that link you gave it doesn't have a user replacable battery. Anbody got any idea how long the internal battery will last on one charge?
These have already started appearing on ebay with photos and description stolen from the Aldi site.

Well got mine..........
The store seemed to have loads (came in boxes of 10 in a larger brown box) - thats Shaw , Oldham by the way............
The queue didn't smell of wee or poo too much!
A few people in the queue for the laptop left after one recieved a phone call about a Sony Vaio for the same price at Dixons - apparently in this morning papers.
Gonna play now..................
Dave, Oldham. (Hope this pda lasts longer than last years!)
Got mine as well. Even in the house (near a window) it has managed to find enough satellites to show the street where I live. Seems to be a quality unit. I've nothing to compare the pda with as I've never had one before but it seems to be much faster locking on to satellites than my Magellan GPS unit.
Got me one too!
The queue in the Congleton branch was full of OAPs. They had about 30 of them and there were 20 grannies infront of me with them! Im assuming they have all been sent down to get them by relatives!
I got one from the York store. They apparently had 30 in total. There were only 6 left at 9.10 (the shop opens at 9) so they're probably sold out by now.
Play time will have to wait, i've done a 12 hour night shift, i'm knackered and i'm off to bed
Can I just ask those of you who have got them what the PDA is liek?
Is it bulky - large??? quite compact??
I've got one of the old Medions and was wondering if its worth "upgrading"??
Thanks
whiteswan
11-11-2004, 08:57
Its very compact - the main reason to upgrade is lack of wirs trailing all over the car - coz the gps is built into pda - and like a poster above I am locked onto 8 satellites sat in my lounge - not even near a window.
I had one of last years but it kept freezing up and needed to be reset so back it went.
This seems to have full european maps as well as when u goto search for a destination you have to choose country.
Dave, Oldham.
I've picked one of these up for my mum - very compact, and every conceivable extra in the box. :) Its on charge at the mo, I'll have a play on my lunch hour. I was 11th in the queue at 8.45 am - by the time I left I'd guess there were maybe 25 behind me. The manager said he had about 50, and that you were allowed one at a time, a woman at the front of the queue wanted a few, but he said she'd have to go back and join the queue for each one she wanted. So I'd guess most places have probably sold out by now!
Managed to get myself one of these too. Queued from 8am at the Grays, Essex store, by 9am must have been about 30 people queuing - so glad I got there early.
The pda itself is quite small, sturdy and responsive. The stylus takes a bit of yanking to get out though.
The GPS software, Medion Navigator 4.2 (which looks identical to Navigon Navigator 4.2) takes a bit of getting used to, especially if you are used to Tomtom navigator.
Think I better read the manual, if I can find one on the cds - the printed manual only shows how to install the navigator software not how to actually use it
The complete kit includes car kit, desktop docking station, 4 cds of maps, 256 mmc card and of course the pda - worth every penny so far I think :)

Got one from Nuneaton. This morning again they seemed to have at least 20 but there was a lot of people asking. Had a quick play and manged to get going in 5 minutes. The software seems functional but prehaps could be a little more intuitive to use but I'm sure I'll get used to it in few days.
The quality of the pocket pc seems fine and the generous extras in the box and 3 year waranty make it a very sweet deal. In the cue I almost decided to buy 2 (this one's for my wife) but figured it will come around again in 6 months and moght be even cheaper.
Overall very impressed.

It's a small world, I joined the same que at 8:50am, even though the Aldi web site says there is not a shop in Grays :cuckoo:
When I got mine there were still about 20 people behind me....
I've got a trip to a factory in Germany next week, fingers crossed it's on the map :?:

Mine finds the satellites very fast. Much quicker than my old Magellan 315. Only way you should struggle is if you are surrounded by high rise buildings.

I've managed to have a further play with the pda and have a few observations... the startup picture has a teleatlas logo, but navigon mobile navigator (which is the exact same interface) uses navteq map data.
When the pda is on charge, it makes a low sounding whistling noise when accessing the gps software, does this happen to anyone else?
The manual mentions an active sync cable, I don't seem to have one of these. I have the dock unit, which has an usb adapter at one end, but thats all with usb.
Ive checked the cd's and there is no manual at all for the gps software, and i've had no luck locating one online so far.

Hi sarah Activesync is a microsoft piece of software for synching the pda with a PC. If you connect the cradle up to your pc with the USB cable and install the activesync software (should be on a CD with the PDA) then all should be fine for synching info with your PC. If you cant find activesync on the cd you can download it from M$ (Microsoft) link is http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/activesync37.mspx
hope the above helps... if your still stuck give us a shout on here theres lots of nice helpful people on here :)
Best of luck

Anyone managed to install speed camera software with this?
M6 Toll Road reconised?
Get the ver latest version of activesync for your version of pocketPC (should be 2003 I've still only got V3 on my ipaq). Important to remember to load activesync BEFORE you connect the pocketpc to your pc. I'd also advise switching off syncing your outlook inbox or you'll be there forever waiting for all your mails to transfer and eat up the available space on your pocketpc. Just go for the contacts, notes and appointments when syncing.
I've had the ipaq for 3 years and wouldn't be without one now..
I have the active sync software setup and working, but the manual mentions and shows a picture of an active sync cable - pda -> usb (with option to plug mains power into it) but I dont seem to have that cable. Using the dock is no problem though just wondered if I was missing part of the pda kit.
I managed to find the 109 page manual though thanks to oOps which will give me something to do when bored hehe :)

Just seeing if I can add in customisable points of interest at the moment. ie speed cameras :)
Just managed to pick one :)
Looks look it'll take quite a while to get my head around Navigon. Does anyone know how to use it to "follow" your journey rather than a planned one?

Is that so you'll know where you've been????

useful for poi's and stuff when you know the route.
EDIT: http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=329666
Picked one up in Leek at about 10am. Looks like it's got the M6 Toll on it as well. Off to Vienna tomorrow so the extra cds will be useful. Just been driving round town navigating to places I know - sad - but it's a new toy :)

Well I used it to navigate from Aldis to work , sat in the carpark for 5 mins while working out how to use it !!
The map corrider of large routes does look very good though.

You need an and-on to use POI on it.
All the information as to what why and how (much) is on the site that has been given many times already.
Here's one way of doing it..
http://www.pocketgps.co.uk/poiwarner.php
If you buy and install that add-on, you can then download the POI data (cameras etc) and there is a free prog to concert .csv files to .asc (I think) which this software and TomTom use for their data.
When you have installed the above program, there will be a folder on your PDA programs -> POIwarner~ -> pois or similar, Ensure you put the data files in there as it doesn't look anywhere else (I eventually discovered).

If it's the same as the old one you pick the location tab rather than navigation. You may be disappointed to learn that it doesn't say "you have just turned left" etc.
Not bothered about prompts, just for it to show map and poi's. The main menu of this version only has single or multiple destinations, nothing with 'location'.

Select "Show Map" this will follow your journey as you drive.
Dave
I thought that option was only available after you enter a destination, I'll give it a go, thanks.

No
I used it today when I was coming back from the airport - it did freeze (memories of last year) for about a minute - arrow dissappeared etc - and NO i wasnt in a tunnel or anything - but it corrected itself - much better than having to do a reset like last years machine!

Has anyone managed to add any points of interest directly into it yet without getting hold of something like POI-Warner ?
I think this should be possible! I think that all POIwarner does if you give you audio alerts when you approach the poi points e.g sped cameras. I think you can just import them normally! Not tried it yet, will not get chance to play till the weekend!

Cheers to OP,
Picked one up at Leicester. Queue was 7 people when i joined at 8.50am.
The guy in front of me picked up 6 of them... I'm just glad that the girl behind the counter picked up another brown box !
Went to southend this evening for a quick visit and finally managed to do a good test of the pda+gps.
3D view I found was not very reliable. It would show turnings and POI about 5 seconds after I had passed them. 2D was slightly better, but the map kept sticking, especially around roundabouts, then would catch up, telling me to take the 2nd exit, when I have already passed the roundabout.
On the A127, approaching the A130 turnoff, I was told about 5000 times repeatedly to bear left.
I tried setting the smartbattery settings to Superior Mode (more cpu power) but it didnt have any effect.
I'm wondering if the mmc card is too slow, or even worse, the 300mhz processor is too slow for this particular software.
Is my experience so far of the pda+gps typical or am I just having teething problems....
could it be the reception?
I've found that GPS signals around the A13 is always a bit dodgy.

I did wonder this, but the software showed 8 satellites most of the time (the rest was 6 or 7). I'll have to try it tomorrow morning on my way to Hammersmith.
Mine struggled at work, but as soon as I pulled out of the car park, about half a mile away it picked up four satellites, and then when I hit the motorway it switched between seven and eight. :)

Got mine today and have to say I am impressed with the kit for the price. I was going to go with the Tom Tom Go at around £412, but this really does the biz for me and supplies more for the money! Not perfect, but certainly as good as the map info that has been uploaded to it!
I want POIs though! Where / how?
you need poi-warner, get the pois from pocketgps.co.uk (and other places), convert them using poi-edit. Everything you need is at http://www.navigating.de/MN_en/POI/Index_Choice.htm
I just did my first journey with this and it did an excellent job of getting me lost :| It did use my usual route home in backstreets which makes up for it. Only problem is the delay in the map after losing signal (tunnel), it also took 10 mins for the map to catch up at the beginning of the journey although the voice directions were ok
EDIT: is there anywhere that does a screen protector for this? can only find ones for ipaqs and dells etc, don't want the generic cut to size stuff.

Give it a try, although the Leicester branch seems to sell out of the good stuff fast. presumably because it's a large city

Navigation Instructions are sometimes a little late, for example, Take the 2nd Exit on the roundabout in 50 yards - but Im already on the roundabout.
I've decided to leave mine on charge for 24hrs (even though batt light is green).
Mine also makes a whistling noise when on charge. But not just accessing the GPS, accessing anything ! The noise then stops after a while. Will have to check I don't get the noise when not charging.
On another note - How small is this PDA ! It seems more Palm size, than Pocket PC - Nice.
The out door case is obviously able to carry your PDA and your sandwiches :n0rty:
The only thing that would have made this PDA better would have been built in bluetooth - one day all PDAs will have it (I hope). I know you can get SD bluetooth cards, but then you loose the extra memory for the GPS, plus the card sticks out of the top of the PDA - otherwise, so far, excellent.

Seeing as this has turned into a discussion thread I have started a new thread in the Computing Forum for this excellent piece of kit.
See ya there.

Well PDA off charge now, and it seems to only make a low whistling sound when accessing anything from the front screen eg
the GPS / the Start menu / Anything on the start menu !
Sound stops after about 7s, anyone else got this problem ?
Off to computing forum now to check it out.

seeing as this bargain is now is all likelihood sold out everywhere, and there is now a thread (http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=330789) in computing - closing :)
