Myself and about twenty earlycomers to the Finn Brothers show saw this Australian songstress last night... thought she was absolutely excellent. She's playing Upstairs At The Garage on Monday... might even go!

Anyway, singer-songwriter fans - www.missyhiggins.com - album is about £6 at HMV Australia!

Anyone heard of her? I hadn't until last night, but my Australian friend was quite familiar. "Scar" is a really good track.

Been listening to her album 'sound of white' for a while (- was sent it by a friend who knows I have eclectic tastes). Fantastic voice - wish I was able to go see her live. Go if you can and report back.

Downloaded the album yesterday and enjoyed it after a couple of listens.
She has a funny way of phrasing some words,a bit like Harriet Wheeler from the Sundays and Jamie whatshername's mockney vocals from Hepburn
A bit skint at the moment but I'm tempted to go and see her tomorrow as I'm sure it will be a few months before I get the opportunity again...

I've decided to definitely go to The Garage tomorrow. The more I listen to the album on the web site, the more I like it.

Oh god, not another one !

What a voice. If I lived in the village I'd be there outside in a sleeping bag yesterday. She's fantastic. Beautiful voice - spot on with the Harriet comparison, Lorne T. Some beautiful lyric writing in the first verse or two of 'Don't Ever'. Top find, Mr G ! ;)

The album's $32AUS inc from HMV - which I make about £13. Have I got that right ? (Probably not.)

I ordered all her cd's from there on sunday and ordered a extra copy of the album as I was going to use it as a christmas present.
As I had to pay postage and may even get charged for customs I'd be selling it for £10 + postage if anyone wanted it.

I paid $16.99 Australian for it on Saturday! People should listen to me sooner. ;) In fact, I ordered *everything* of hers on the site and paid under £18.

Managed to get a ticket for cost price outside.
Good gig.Nice to hear the album tracks.
Suprised that the songs were new to 99% of the audience (mostly Aussies!).
Look forward to seeing her again...

To make you feel worse, there were about 6 people looking for tickets and they all got in!
I managed to get a ticket before the doors opened as a couple were selling a pair,I shouted across to another man who was looking for one so we both were happy.
It was a solo gig with Missy alternating between keyboards and guitar.
Certainly see her again if she comes back next year.
Didn't realise she was a talent contest winner though,Oz's answer to Sinead Quinn!...

Emailed my mate in Brisbane and berated him for his taking his eye off the ball re: a recommendation. His response ? "Oh for god's sake - you can't go anywhere without hearing about Missy Higgins. Over here you'd think she was the first woman who'd ever worked out how to write a song ..." :)

Kicking myself that I missed her supporting Pete Murray in Australia last summer. Damned lack of parking spaces :brickwall Funnily enough I hadn't heard of her at the time, but almost immediately afterwards she started getting lots of airplay with her 'Scar' EP. How did her CD do over here generally? I must admit I haven't seen it in the shops... did it get an official UK release?

mikegray
29-03-2005, 21:42
I don't think it's had a UK release, although she's just announced another date at Shepherd's Bush Empire.

I'm *really* kicking myself, because Nerina Pallot (who I really like) supported her at the Islington Academy and I'd decided to see The Donnas that night instead. :brickwall And the only reason it was that night was because The Donnas re-scheduled. :brickwall :brickwall And Nerina couldn't get me a press ticket because her guestlist was full. :brickwall :brickwall :brickwall

Anyone going to any of her other gigs at the end of the month?

Birmingham (nearest to me, and a weekend) was sold out before I knew it was on, but I've now decided to go to the Manchester one after realising that that day is a bank holiday, and knowing that Nerina Pallot is the support :)

Also noticed that Nerina is supporting Suzanne Vega next month!, although my tickets for that one seem to be lost in the post :(

Might see you in Manchester, then.... should be good... looks like I'm going on my own, though :(

Can you recommend somewhere to park nearby?... I lived in Manchester for a couple of years, never been to that particular venue, and whenever I went out in the city centre it'd be walking/buses/taxis, so I've got no idea which car parks stay open late....

And it's the start of a month or so of good gigs... Missy Higgins, Tori, Garbage, Suzanne Vega, and Thea Gilmore between now and early July :)

mikegray

I'm going to, Missy, Tori, Suzanne and Thea of those. ;)

It's a bank holiday monday so should be Sunday parking. I think you can actually park down the side of the venue if you get there early enough, although I'm going by public transport and getting a lift back, due to my car going in for an MOT. It's very near Deansgate Station and the Palace Theatre, if that helps.

I'll be there with my girlfriend and a friend (he's 7ft and wearing a jacket with badges on it, you can't really miss him) so do say hello.

omg... it's a Saturday night and you *aren't* at a gig?!.... :)

I'd only realised that it was a bank holiday earlier this week, otherwise I probably wouldn't be going.... but I've still got a 2.5hr drive home afterwards, and work the next day, so it'll be an alcohol-free night :(

Trains back from Manchester to Leamington are absolutely hopeless, particularly that night - the last direct train is 19:24, and the last indirect train (3 changes!) is 20:45.... And there don't seem to be so many Travelodge bargains any more.... So I'll have to drive...

But I think I'd regret it if I didn't go to this one :)

Manchester tomorrow :)

Looks like I'm going to have to reply to myself again....

Yep, it was a very good night out - as expected she played pretty much everything from the album (which is finally getting a UK release in a couple of weeks!), and several others, including a particularly good cover of Patty Griffin - Moses

But IMHO, Nerina Pallot was even better! Everything from her new album sounds much better live (the album is a little overproduced). And she did a cover of Joy Division's 'Love Will Tear Us Apart', in a quite Tori-like style! :)

Interesting venue... almost really really good - being so small, and surprisingly good acoustics. But there's several pillars blocking the view from almost everywhere if you're towards the back....

It was slightly spoilt by a couple of drunken girls that kept talking/giggling loudly, and bar staff managing to make a huge amount of noise shifting glasses/bottles around during the quiet songs.... (maybe that only bothered me because I was driving, and therefore not drinking....) but it was well worth the trip up to Manchester :)

Very much looking forward to seeing Nerina supporting Suzanne Vega later in the month!

mikegray
01-06-2005, 00:08
Yeah, Nerina hit it out of the park last night. She's done Love Will Tear Us Apart maybe five times, now, and I've been there for three of them :p - love the version she does, though, totally makes it her own.

Missy was good - surprised at the talkers, and imagine it will be far worse for the London show tomorrow, but heck, it'll still be worth it. Nice to hear some of the more esoteric stuff like Peachy and Cactus That Found The Beat. Met her beforehand and she was pleasant enough, and signed my CDs. She also signed afterwards, although she didn't come out, some bloke took them backstage to her.

Will post some pics later...

Just to revive this, the London show was utterly different to the Manchester show. Full band, different set list (Casualty was in there, for a start, and no "Moses") but probably the most annoyingly talky and ignorant crowd I've had the misfortune to endure. Particularly rude during the two supports.

What was Nerina's setlist like? anything from Dear Frustrated Superstar? Or is that ancient history for her?.... I'm very much looking forward to seeing her again supporting Suzanne Vega in a couple of weeks time :)

I was surprised that Missy H opened with 'Nightminds' in Manchester, as it's one of her best songs (have you heard the Dave Higgins remix? I love it!), and I thought she'd save it for the end. Actually, it was looking like she wouldn't have anything to play for an encore, as I'd heard from a friend that saw her in New Zealand a few weeks back that she hadn't played 'The Sound of White'....

Have you noiticed that Casualty has been dropped from the UK release of Missy's album, and there's a new song - 'Unbroken'?. IMHO, Casualty is one of the weakest songs on the album, and I don't think I'd miss it.

Went to Missy's live set at Virgin in Oxford Street early this evening.
It was excellent and I actually enjoyed it more than her Empire show.
Didn't hang around to get things signed as I'm never fussed about that sort of thing.

She's playing a lot of new material now,the albums shaping up to be good and slightly rockier in places.
She'll have a hit single if they release "Steer" over here with some decent publicity.
It's got a "Pinball wizard" type openng and is similiar in style to "Torn" though nothing like if if you see what I mean!!

Cool, I will have to check it out as the first album was great. I don't suppose any of her singles will get released over here and the album will probably have a huge delay like the last one so I will probably have to import it from Australia

Rocked-up Missy with the full band! Like it :)

'Steer' definitly seems like the stand-out new song - the others weren't so memorable.

And she wasn't anywhere near as drunk/stoned/jet-lagged (delete as appropriate) as when I saw her last at last year's St. James' Church gig - she didn't ramble on between songs in the same way...

There was the usual mostly-Aussie audience that won't shut up during the quiet bits - and that sing along a lot more/louder than most UK audiences... But it wasn't so out-of-place in a venue that size.

I don't know if you're talking about Wireless or Koko but she certainly lost the plot for a few seconds on occasion at Koko.
Last night I was just thinking to myself that there were far less heckles than usual from the Australians in the audience when some idiot shouted out some inane comment!
