These are cracking prices. I went for the Mju having heard lots of horror stories about the Ixus (the dreaded E18 error!).
I heard in 1 review that they changed the mechanism in the Ixus not sure how true it is.
The only let down with the Olympus is it takes XD cards which cost a fortune.

xD cards aren't so bad any more - Amazon have a Fuji 512Mb (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000ERUQE/thedvdforums-21) for 53.99 delivered.
Been getting very tempted by the Olympus (reviews here (http://www.dcviews.com/_olympus/mini.htm) at dcviews) as it seems ideal as a compact that I can also take snowboarding and mountain-biking without worrying about it getting a bit wet. Will wait and see what deals there are after christmas though.

I'd really like to believe that, because I prefer the Ixus. I was speaking to a friend who had to pay £130 for his camera to be repaired. It seems to be a plastic lens assembly which gets upset at a slight knock, dust in the works or a slightly flat battery, and so powers off to prevent further damage.
I've got CF cards already so Canon seemed to be the way to go, but I'd always be worried about the camera dying.

I dunno for that price you can get a 1gb Compact Flash or Secure Digital.

I know at least 10 people with ixus cameras ranging from 400->430->500's and we've all had them for most part a year at least and non have had any problems with it what so ever.
According to ...
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/read_opinions.asp?prodkey=canon_s500
... 4 cameras out of 50 reviewed got the E18 error - so about 8%. Not high, but high enough! I felt really sorry for the chap who had it happen only two weeks after purchase, and the other chap who had two fail.
I really hope yours continues to work well - it seems to be a cracking little camera.
If you want to continue with Canon the Ixus 40 is a good camera ive had mine a week, its £229.99 at Amazon UK (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/redirect-home?tag=thedvdforums-21&site=dvd) or £233 from Cameras2U.com (http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/click?p=20266&a=60823&g=634508) but with the voucher it does make it £50 more expensive than the Olympus.
Good review of the Olymps here> http://www.steves-digicams.com/2004_reviews/verve.html
Im not sure i could get on with the shape or that jog wheel myself, it does say in the review its a bit difficult to hold.
I'm looking for a camera like the new Canon IXUS 30 or 40, top of my list at the moment is the IXUS 30. Things I'm looking for are small, light, reasonable quality photos, some optical zoom, minimum 3MP, large screen, ~£200 or less.
It's mainly for my girlfriend but also for occasions when the 20D is just too big, heavy or expensive to use. I only really know the Canon range well so I was drawn to the IXUS 30, do Sony or any other companies make a similar camera?
Thanks!
The only place you can get the Ixus 30 is Jessops (http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/click?p=17211&a=60823&g=106115) they have a UK exclusive on it and its priced ad £249.99
The Sony range have the P100 for around £200 using the Dixons voucher.
Well it hurt to do it, but I've just returned my IXUS 40. I sold an a95 to get it and maybe expected too much of the little IXUS. Back to being a happy a95 owner. I thought the size and everything was fantastic & loved the screen but had to take about 4 pics to get 1 good one...the moment had gone then. For some though, I can see the portability being the over riding factor here & good luck to you...although £230 is a bit dear when you can get comparable results with the little Minoltas etc for half that...just my 2 pen'orth...sorry...waffled and went OT

:( Think i have to agree with you been using mine for a week and shots were good but was taking them outside in good light, been taking some indoors and they are quite noisy its a lovely camera and has all the right features you need but in just not 100% happy with it, im not sure to go back to a Ixus 500 , i recently had a Sony P100 but in automatic mode you could only choose 4 sizes of photo you couldnt change the quality of the pic, you could in manual mode for some reason.
Anybody suggest another good camera , it wants to be no bigger than a 500
Agree with you there deanos, the s500 took fantastic pics but just not enough manual stuff for me to learn on (I also like the AA battery thing too). I'm staying with the a95 for at least 12 mths now...that's what I told the Mrs anyway;-)

deanos, I bought an Ixus 430 last week and I am happy with it.
The other camera that was recommended to me at the time was a Pentax Optio S4i.

Ive already had a S4i wasnt very impressed to be honest,
Does anybody know if the Ixus40 is a replacement for the Ixus 430/500 range ? Im not really in a rush if there are new models of the Ixus 430/500 out soon
I think the Optio S4i got a top ratting in STUFF magazine a few months ago which propted my m8 to buy it and it's small and gives gr8 pics - he's well happy. talking about Jessops I think their £30 insurance seams a good buy especially if you get something like the dreaded E18 error!.
At the moment theri are so many new cameras coming out it's hard to choose, I'm looking to upgrade my current Ricoh RR30 with somethiong around £250 for Xmas - so I'll wait and see what pops up.

Get a Barclaycard then you get a years extra warranty for free if spending over £150 or 2 years if spending over £250:)
The S4i is let down in indoor/low light shots they vecome quite noisy i found, trouble is having a 430 then a 500 ive become very picky about image quality and im hard to please now
Yep I have a Barclaycard and and big item use their free insurance, so 1 year becomes 2 & 2 becomes 3. But yes I'd forgotten about it for a minute there - well prompted deanos
Ohh i dont know what to do , i got a Ixus500 delivered today and took some photos and they are quite similar to the 40, the 500 seems like a brick now compared to the 40
Ive took 2 sets of photos with the cameras (500 & 40), please compare the 2 sets of pictures and see if there is alot of noticable diffrence ?

whats the problem with the E18 error, if the cameras faulty bring/send it back?
I suppose it depends on how long you have had it - typically it will give up just after the warranty is up - then you are left with a dead duck.

I think I'm going to choose between the 500 and 40 for my partners new toy, as you obviously have or had both, can you give me your views on these questions please:
1) Is the speed of taking the shot with the 40 that much better?
2) Is the size of screen that significant?
3) What do you think of the photo quality?
thanks
mike
mbuckhurst, sorry to butt in here, I would say there is no doubt that the 500 gives far suprerior pictures to the 40. (I've owned both this year.) In good light the 40 is pretty good but is beaten up by the 500 still. If you haven't had a 2" screen you'll get used to the smaller 500 one pretty quickly. If you have both on "auto", they both autofocus and tbh, I never found any real difference in speeds at all. The pocketability of the 40 is something else though. My main concern was that for £230.00 (Ixus40) the pictures were no better than my Dad's little pocket SONY which can now be bought for about £100.00! Which is why I sent mine back...
Its difficult as the 40 is far superior to the 500 in every aspect part from the pic quality ,Set 1 on page 1 is taken with the 500, set 2 the 40 if you want to compare pictures.
It is alot faster than the 500 in startup ,shot to shot and review mode, the burst mode is alot quicker ideal for taking pics of kids for example.
Good review on the 40 http://www.steves-digicams.com/2004_reviews/sd300.html
How come the pics on there look great
Updated, seems to be a big price drop on some items

I ordered an Olympus Mju Mini for a friend today and the DIXONS20 code doesn't work.
There's a voucher in today's Mail on Sunday for £50 off a Nikon 4200 or 5200.
marlot, how long does it say that the voucher is vaild too ?
Its only valid this weekend, but they are due to repeat it another two times between now and Christmas - in each case only valid for the weekend. It takes the form of a cheque from Nikon when you send in the voucher with a photocopy of the receipt and a page from the warranty.
The first time was the weekend of 13/14 November, but I saw it in today's paper so making the 20/21 the second time it has run.
If you're a costco member, they have the 5200 for just under £200, so after claiming the £50 back from Nikon that's £150.
From the Nikon web site:
"Tuesday November 9, 2004
Consumer Coolpix price reduction and Cash Back promotion announced in the run up to Christmas
Nikon are pleased to announce a price reduction on the Coolpix 4200 and 5200 effective 9th November 2004.
The recommended retail price for the Coolpix 4200 will now be £229.99 (previous price £249.99).
The recommended retail price for the Coolpix 5200 will be £249.99 (previous price £279.99).
In addition, Nikon are pleased to inform you of a Cash Back promotion available on the Coolpix 4200 and Coolpix 5200. Nikon are offering customers the opportunity to claim £50 back on the price they paid in-store on either of these products.
The promotion will run for the weekend of the 13th and 14th November only.
This will be the first of 4 such weekend promotions Nikon are running between now and Christmas."
Dont go to Costco as the 5200 is £184.94 delivered at Dixons (http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/click?p=1468&a=60823&g=16569) (with £20 voucher) , £134.94 with the £50 discount
How does this cashback work then do you have to buy the camera on those particular weekends to qualify
I ordered an Olympus Mju Mini for a friend today and the DIXONS20 code doesn't work.
Try adding a cheap item as it has to be over £200
Here's a summary of most of the ultracompacts with optical zoom available today:

Pentax Optio S4i 84x52x20 87.36 105 4 SD x3 1.8" 1/2.5"
Can't guarantee all the details, I collected for a few sources. Volume is rectangular box not displacement, that's why the Coolpix comes out so high. Pick of the bunch looks to be the Pentax Optio s4i, the Canon IXUS 40 or Casio Exilim EX-Z40.
Ordered an IXUS 40 last night. Thats my Christmas pressie sorted. Thanks to the OP
Anyone know if the Canon DCC-60 Soft Leather Case for Canon Ixus 40 is any good? It's about £15.

The 40 is a refined 430, slimmer/bigger screen/digic2 processor. There is also a 30 which is a refined IIs (3MP) but there won't be a 5MP version of these new ones so the 500 is still the flagship model.
Personally I much prefer the 40 to the 500 though now, I can live with 1 less MP cos the extra speed of the digic2 processor in the 40 is incredible. I spend all day at work using the 40 then get home and use my 500 and it seems to take forever to switch on/focus and shoot/scroll through pictures, whereas the 40 is so very quick. The screen and the whole rear button layout is much easier on the eye too.
For a quick test, get one of each next to one other, turn the flashes off, put them in continous mode and hold shoot down. You'll soon see what I mean :)

Its very well made and fits the camera like a glove , you can get copy's on Ebay for about £9 delivered but it aint worth it as quality is very poor and they arnt made of leather.
Took advantage of the offer on the DSC-P100 just now....used the DIXONS20 code, and also had a 5% off code from work. But when i entered that after, the price went back up (1 voucher per transaction unfortunately) :(

Just got my camera today - wow. Tiny, fast, great pics!
Don't like the huge hole in top on that case though.
Gonna go to town tomorrow, see if I can fit the camera neatly into a nice LowePro case...

Currys/Dixons/PC World currently have a Antler case half price for £7.49 picked up one yesterday it fits the camera OK just slightly bigger than the camera but it also has a space for a spare SD card, the belt strap on the back has a press stud so you dont have to take your belt off to put it on.
Currys (http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/pan/TrackerServlet?p=1469&a=60823&g=13819) put ANTLER ALP-S2 in search box to see it

Dixons (http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/click?p=1468&a=60823&g=16569) have on offer the FUJI A607 3pm which doubles via Fuji sensor to 6pm
Not bad for £99

Similar problem here, my IXUS40 arrived at home on Tuesday, but i've only got to wait another 2 days to use it.
Has anyone tried to order the Nikon 5200 with the £20 Discount from Dixons? It bombs me out when i click submit order. Was doing this yesterday as well...
Rang Dixons order line they say i can't use the code with the nikon as it is already discounted :(
Ive tried the 5200 with the £20off worked for me on Mon/Tues but i didn't complete the order, taking it to jessops for another price match :)
Then £50 cash back from nikon £134 for a 5mp camera is very gd.
see the canon DCC-60 soft leather case for the canon ixus 40, is there room to fit another battery in with the camera ?

Nope you cant fit anything else in the case its a snug fit
Can somebody shed some light on the £50 off Nikon 5200 do you have to buy the camera on a specific day could someonw post the t+c's of the voucher please.
The Nikon voucher I used was only valid for a specified Sat and Sun, and implied that the camera had to be bought instore (you had to get a store stamp on the voucher). You then send it off for a rebate by cheque. I sent mine off so don't have a copy, but you could ring Nikon if you want to know when/where they'll publish the next one [but I'd expect one in tomorrow's Mail on Sunday].
Never used a Nikon is it a good camera ?
i could post the voucher but it would be no good as it states no photocopies.

OK, cheers!
Looks like it might be a tight fit to get in while the case is still on your belt though... think you'd have to open it right up to get the cam in?
Doing my research here, and I'm down to:
1. Your one - really tight, but fits.
2. Lowepro D-RES 8S - 6.5 x 4 x 10cm internally, and will fit a battery and memory easily too. (too easily?)
3. Lowepro Rezo 10 - 7 x 1.5 x 9.5 cm, stretchy too, maybe too tight for camera insertion on belt?
(I like Lowepro, and it's lovely sliplok system.)
Decisions...

Cheers anyhow!

Not that I would ever go out in public with my camera case attached to my belt :dork: ( ;) ), but for you, I've just tried it. Case needs to be open pretty much all the way, but no big deal, and the camera comes out, and back in with no trouble at all.

Ya wee honey - cheers for trying...
But, with 2 SD cards in the left pouch, a battery in the right pouch, I think I'd drop the camera in a semi-drunken stupor if I had to open or close the case all the way round to the bottom. ;)
On mine, the camera is in the 'netting' pouch...obviously, but then I've got the spare battery, and SD card in the 2 pocket type things on the other side. No chance of them falling out of there unless in your drunken stupor you open the case fully, and then decide to attempt a handstand :D

Dismayed - Delivery of the same 10ukp case from a variety of camera companies in England ranges from 1.25ukp, to 18.95ukp, for similar timescales too. 18.95 is about $35 - I can have items shipped from the other side of the world for less.
In the UK (Mainland+NI), Special Delivery, Recorded Delivery and normal post all cost the same throughout the UK.
It's like throwing good business away. I can just about get a return ticket to London cheaper.
