View Full Version : Car Tyres
Did a search and didn't find anything about this so thought it may help some people. I needed a couple of tyres 205/55 R15 V rated. Now last time this cost me £160 to get them from one of the national chains. I managed to get this down to £126 this time from another chain. However did a quick google and came up with
http://www.blackcircles.com/home?source=menu
Got them for £89 for both fitted. It works by you putting in your requirements and then they come up with the best prices listed by tyre brands. It is regional based so the price is your best local price. When you accept the deal and pay then then tell you what garage it is. Just go along to the garage at a day and time chosen by you and the tyres are fitted. All the garages I saw were small locals not the big chains. Saved me a tidy sum. The oddest thing is that the company are based in my small town of 10 thousand people and seem to be on the up and up. Honest I had never heard of them locally. You never see whats under your nose.
... or http://www.mytyres.co.uk
According to them, you can pick up the cheepie nankang's for £37.70 each. Normally £5 each for fitting locally, and you get a pair for £85.... ;)
Also seems competative but they charge extra for disposal of the old tyres and fitting to alloys. Also I may be wrong but it looks like they deliver the tyre to you and then you have to take it to the supplier. The blackcircle deal is that they do not supply the tyre they just source the best deal locally. Anyway I'm glad there is at last real competition to the big boys.

However, I'd recommend getting a better tyre for the same money that you'd normally spend (or still possibly less) rather than going for a cheapo tyre and saving loads.
As for my opinion on Nankang, utter rubbish that I will NEVER buy again. Want to stay on the road in the wet? Then leave these alone.
Excellent, I needed a pair of rears thanks.
I certainly agree with Mr Coates.
Save on the car (buy an old-ish second hand car), save on a few pints in the pub, hunt other bargains here to save a few more pounds but by all mean do not try to save by buying dodgy tyres.
Your life depends on these tyres, especially when it rains (which occurs occasionally in this country).

Totaly agree, they are death traps. "Budget" tyres are almost always a false economy, unfortunately most people won't realise that until they find themselves in an emergency situation with teflon coated tyres...
Try calling Costco if there's one in the area. Got 205/55 R14 Michelin Pilot Energy for about £40 each fitted and balanced. You do need to pay the membership cost of £30, or get a friend who's a member to take you. They also do a cheap barand , Kumho I think, but tyres are never something I'd scrimp on. My local and very very good garage get their tyres from Costco now as they're cheaper than they can get them wholesale!
If you want something other than Michelins (like the excellent Goodyear F1) blackcircles do have very good prices.
I'd certainly rather spend an extra £5 or £10 on good quality Michelins rather than Nankings, if you think about skimping on tyres remember all those Ford Explorer owners!

Who i used last week to my advantage. I needed a pair of 155x13x70 tyres. My local kwikfit quoted me 90quid for a pair of cheapy brand tyres or more for pirelli/goodyears. I bought a pair from mytyres.co.uk for about 50quid the pair, then just drove them down to the same kwikfit who happily fitted the pair, balanced & disposed of the old tyres for 5quid each wheel.
So, I saved about 50quid on what they would have charged for the same tyres.
Its worth noting that mytyres actually delivered the next day from germany. Fantastic service.
Their prices do look pretty keen overall and I'll certainly be bearing them in mind for thee future.
However I have just had to replace my 2 front tyres. The tyres are Avon ZZ3's that cost £300 + fitting (205/40/17) for a pair when I bought them. Blackcircles charge £165 + fitting a pair including delivery or £180 fitted, and Mytyres charge £159 a pair. I had mine fitted at my locak garage for £150 including fitting and everything.

Well said! Its a shame most idiots don't think the same way about the bits that stop the car too! The really cheap pads you can buy in all the usual local baragain basement car shops are solid as a rock and do pretty much nothing when you put your foot on the pedal. So pair those with some cheap tyres and I guess you may as well program your insurance companies claim line number into your mobile as your going to need it! Remember, this :brickwall hurts!

The Ford Explorers did not have budget tyres. There was a problem with the tyres if they were under inflated in that the sidewalls weakened (and suffered from blowouts as a result).
As a consequence of this virtually all US cars are fitted with electronic pressure senors. The US model Mazda RX-8 has them whereas the UK one does not.
I agree on the whole tyre thing - the more grip you can get for your money the better. Also be aware of "other" brands that offer good levels of grip for less money. Grip is mainly down to the compound used and it is possible to buy a budget tyre with a softer compound. Toyo are an example of an alternative brand who offer excellent tyres at good prices. I managed to source 4 Toyo Proxes T1S 205/55 R16 on my last car for about £60 each from MyTyres.co.uk (and I had the same tyres on the car before that). Cracking for the price.

Anyone in the south of England will find it hard to beat Micheldever Tyres for prices.
They're just north of Winchester, in Micheldever (amazingly enough).
I do, however, completely fail to understand people who try to scrimp on essential items like tyres.
The mantra to use - brakes stop the wheel, tyres stop the car.
sorry if I was confusing, only tried to use a well known example of the importance of decent tyres, although the firestones were used as they were a cheap OEM option (I work in the car component industry and tyres are a funny subject with manufacturers).
Don't really want to go OT but I agree Toyo do tend to be pretty good, Kumho and a lot of the other Korean brands are all right as well now. They copied the Jap tyres and they tend to be good but seem to wear quickly. You'll also tend to find different brands/models will suit different cars, my Civic was supplied with Dunlop Sports and tbh they seemed to be quieter than the Energys but my fuel consumption is better with the Michelins (as they advertise on this model). On my GTV Goodyear F1s are the accepted best all rounder with Pirrelli Pzero as first choice if you can afford to keep changing them. I'm also hearing very good things about the new Avons from friends with Elises.

Checked fitted prices at blackcircles.com with Costco. And providing you want Michelins than Costco is almost £14 quid cheaper for Michelin Primacy Pilot 205/55/R16V. £77.53 compared to almost £100 each at blackcircles.com.
Shame Costco only stock Michelins!!
Personally Im after the Pirelli p6000s (£69.87 fitted via Blackcircle). Anyone know if the Michelins are worth the extra money?
Cheers

Those of you in the South West - call Bathwick, they beat quotes from all the other companies locally and where cheaper than Black Circles and My Tyres - including fitting on my 195/55/R15 Eagle F1's
Aslo remember QuickFit pricematch. I have always got the cheapest price I could, gone along to my local QuickFit and they have beaten it every time. They do no seem to advertise their pricematch, but they've always worked out the cheapest for me.
I've always found the local independant tyre places can do tyres at least as cheaply as mytyres and the like once you add on the cost of disposal, fitting and balancing. They tend to take far more care of your wheels than the chains too.
I can also recommend http://www.buyatyre.com/ which is run by the guys I do trackdays with. They source the tyres, then a Kwikfit mobile fitter comes out to your home or work and fits them. The guy who did mine was far better than most of the retards in the regular Kwikfit places, and my Eagle F1s in the pretty rare size my car needs were way cheaper than anywhere else.

Agreed, Toyo make some well priced performance tyres. They are factory fit on TVR's now :)

Seems like a good site & cheap.
Now, anyone know an equivalent motorcycle site?
Superbike tyres are horrendously expensive & I get about 3 to 4k out of a rear

Aww shucks was hoping to find a cheap deal on a new rear for my bike, but as a I suspected it's all car tyres.

It's not always the case that an unfamiliar brand of tyre means a poor tyre. Some of them are actually just a rebranded tyre made by one of the major manufacturers and are perfectly good tyres.

why not give them a phone. If they don't do bike I bet they've been asked the question before and know someone who does

Really?? will have to remember this :)
Oh and just for the record i dont condone cheapie tyres either - i have Yoko's all round on mine.. and they're expensive when you get 205/40/17's!!
National Tyres are usually quite cheap for bike tyres, probably not as cheap as mail order but they fit and balance them (to a loose wheel) as well. They claim to beat any price in the local area, not sure if they'd price match web prices.
The prices on mytyres were quite cheap, but blackcircles wanted £104.55 each for the fully fitted option, whereas one of my local garages would do the same for £93
Worth checking to get an idea of the prices though.
Russell.
i found www.justtyres.co.uk on their specials price, print out the page and take them in, got 2 pirellis done for 60 quid

I have been quoted excellent prices in the past by http://www.etyres.co.uk/ but have never actually got round to using them for one reason or another.
Not really a specific bargain, but worth a mention?

[QUOTE=jlcraig]Try calling Costco if there's one in the area.QUOTE]
I agree with jlcraig.
I just bought four 225/45/17 Michelin Pilot Premacy Tyres from Watford Costco after shopping around for a 'decent' priced Michelin set of tyres, and the cheapest quote I got from anywhere was £150 per tyre (£600 all in!).
Went to Costco who sold the same tyre for £84.98 each PLUS 20% discount for buying four, and Michelin had a Cashback offer so got £40 back from them too. All in, it cost me £288, half the price, but I joined Costco for £30, but that's a year's membership!
I agree, I almost lost the car on a bend in the wet on cheapie tyres that came on the used car I bought, and luckily was on the way to get them chaged to the new ones!

Got Primacy Pilots on my Fabia vRS which has done 7K now. Hoping to get at least another 7 before replacing. A very good tyre (some forums say slightly noisy but I would disagree). Fantastic in dry conditions but not great with heavy rain (but aren't all low profile tyres?). The alloy rim protection seems to work a treat too. Thanks for the price spot at Costco Kam - should save a small bundle
Better start saving though!

Coincidence of a thread!
I've already ordered a set of F1s locally rather than Blackcircles as they were cheaper. Just goes to show that you do have to shop around, even for tyres!

To whoever was after Pirelli P6000 - noooooooooo!
I used to have those as OEM fitment on last car (Seat Leon Cupra).
I swear they were made of plastic. I had the car chipped to 235bhp and they still lasted for over 25k miles (swapped front to back once) which shows just how hard compound they were.
Dunno if the OEM fitment ones are the same as ones you buy - just my 2p worth.

Strange you should say that. A friend of mine has had two Ibiza's from new, a 1.6 Sport and now the 130 TDi. Both came with P6000's and both of them wore out the fronts in around 10k miles. He's quite a "mature" chap as well (well..ok, he's an old git) and is not an agressive driver. He also feels they have very poor wet grip.
Another thread full of chat. :nono:
Please use other forums (we have a General forum for this purpose!) for discussing the merits or pitfalls of cheap tyres (& brakes) and keep the Bargain Forum for discussing sites that offer Bargains.
If the chat threads continue in the Bargain Forum we will be back where we were last year with a server that is too busy for everyone to get on resulting in the annoying "server busy" messages.

Try ringing CMR (City motorcycle repairs) on 0117 373 0350 I used to get my bike tyres from them and he always beat any other price I could come up with. They are in Chapter St off the city center. Not the nicest area in Bristol, but the guy who owns the place (Dave) is an excellent mechanic and the work is always spot on!
