Hi,

I have a few tapes of film here, I thought I would stick them on a DVD, which I know how to do, but I am unsure how to get the actual film from the tape onto the PC.

How do i do it?

Thanks

There's the easy way & there's the hard way.

The Easy way

Buy one of these

http://www.pioneer-eur.com/eur/product_detail.jsp?product_id=8532&taxonomy_id=62-125

link the two together via the ilink (you need to get a firewire lead for this)
not certain where to get one so ask in the suppliers forum on where to get one

You get basic editing & titles from the C/C & that's about it, but if you want to dub sound & put fancy titles & video effects into your footage then You need to edit the footage via a PC (the Hard way  )

& how to do video editing on your PC?

have a look here

I don't know how to get the footage onto the PC so I can edit it, that is the problem I am having.

I am assuming I need an iLink cable? Would I just plug that into my pc and it will transfer it to my PC?

OK, you want to choose the hard way

1. you need to see if you have a firewire interface on your PC. If you do not, then firewire PCI cards are available for about a tenner (firewire & ilink are one & the same)
2. Windows XP has a built in video editor (Moviemaker) the latest version is the best one freely available at the moment IMO & is downloadable from Microsoft (under reccommended updates)
3. burn the finished article to VCD/DVD-/+ I've got Nero V6 which was bundled with the the Writer I bought (a trial version is available to download)

You need the following min PC spec for it to work reasonalbly IMO

1Ghz proccessor
256 Meg ram
40 gig hard drive space (uncompressed DV is roughly 200meg per min) you need space for the finished article as well as the unedited stuff

loads of advice here (as I said earlier, though it may be slightly out of date)

Mods, this thread is now in the wrong Forum please move..

Which format is best to save in?

I would have to say uncompressed .avi as you are not reliant on specific software compression (I learned that to my cost one time) but only if you have the hard drive space.
