just went to hmv today to get my faulty copy of tiger woods 2005 due to a part of the game wont load. its a known problem on the first batch of the game and just been re-released last week since the recall. Anyway its been a month since i got the game (which was from HMV btw) and have since lost the receipt and they wont exchange it without it. so what can i do now???
Get in contact with EA would be your best bet, I'm sure they'd be happy to send you a new one as it's a known problem.
You do not have to have the receipt, you need proof of purchase from them. For example, a bank or credit card statement showing the transaction. A receipt just makes it much easier to prove that you bought it there.
If you cannot provide any such proof, they are well within their rights. How do they know you did not get it elsewhere?

Remember you don't have to have a receipt although it obviously helps. You have the same rights even if you lose your receipt. If you want to return faulty goods and you don't have the receipt, you may need to show 'proof of purchase'. A credit or bank statement should do, or even the word of a shop assistant who sold the item to you.
I have the same problem with Tesco over a pair of shoes. They're happy for me to have a refund for half of what I paid (the current price).
They won't help me by looking at their tills for the day I bought them. It's complicated because I paid £5 in addition to a return.
That much I can prove.

Try taking it back to Asda or Tesco's they are not as picky and if it is one of the faulty ones they wont care as they will usually refund anything....
