£4.99 Night of the Living Dead (1968)

I've seen this in a coouple of independent retailers. It's released by a company called Prism. Is it any good, and if not what is the best of the several versions to get?

I’ll second james’ comment. There is NO other version worth having except the Elite. Even if they were giving this away I wouldn’t have it.

I couldn't agree more with the opinions above - the Elite disc is absolutely the only one worth bothering with.

The problem with this film is that it's in the public domain in the US, which means that anyone who gets their hands on a copy, no matter how poor in terms of quality, can release their own DVD version - which is why there are so many on different labels.

Only two versions made any effort - but the Anchor Bay"30th Anniversary" DVD is by all accounts a total travesty, making unacceptable changes to the original film (even the so-called "original version" on the disc has a new electronic score). Film Threat magazine, which reveres the film, gave this disc minus five stars to show just how much they hated it.

By contrast, the Elite disc was transferred from the original negative and personally approved by George A Romero - significantly, this is the only <I>Night of the Living Dead</I> DVD that features him on a commentary track. True, it's a fair bit more expensive than £4.99, but it's easily worth it - even though it's four years old, it's still one of the best black-and-white transfers I've ever seen.
